The Crown Resorts staff detained in China on alleged gambling crimes could remain in prison for more than thirty days without being charged. The Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has spoken publicly for the first time about the arrests and says consular officials have spoken to two of the three Australians under arrest. One to two Indigenous languages are being lost every year, and only 50 might be left by 2050 as a generation of elders die. A new foundation hopes to capture the languages and songlines and is looking to the corporate sector for help.

  • Australia urged to restore polio eradication funding
In India, in the 1970s, there were hundreds of thousands of children each year who were killed or paralysed by the polio virus. Now, there are none. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is aiming to eradicate the virus altogether by 2019. On World Polio Day a group of international NGOs has held a breakfast at Parliament House in Canberra, to urge the Australian Government to restore the $80 million of funding over four years, it promised in 2014. Polio survivor Ramesh Ferris was a speaker at the event, and he spoke to reporter Peta Donald.

  • Share prices to keep being 'propped up by cheap money'
Share prices are being held around record highs in many markets due to aggressively low interest rates from central banks. Citi's chief global equity strategist Robert Buckland warns that once inflation rises and central banks start lifting interest rates, many share markets could be in for a steep drop. However, he does not anticipate that the Fed's expected rate rise in December will trigger such a massive sell-off, and he does not think inflation will take off in the short term.

The quirky event was part of the international 'Raising the Bar' series, designed to improve the content people consume, while better connecting academia with popular culture. In coming weeks, more events will be held around the world. Pub goers say they're pretty chuffed by the idea.

  • Malcolm Turnbull rejects claim treatment of asylum seekers on Nauru is 'torture'
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has strongly rejected claims in an Amnesty International report that Australia's treatment of refugees on Nauru amounts to torture. Amnesty says most children don't attend school, assaults are rife and mental health problems are widespread. Labor says serious abuse on the island needs to be investigated.
