New research reveals an overwhelming majority of Australians don't care their private metadata is collected and most believe the Government could do more to prevent a domestic terrorist attack. The snapshot taken by the Australian National University also reveals around 70 per cent of the population is concerned by the rise of Islamic extremism, and four out of five people agree tough border controls are crucial to prevent threats such as terror.

  • 'Deflect, deflect, deflect': Simon Jackman on Donald Trump in second presidential debate
Emily Bourke discusses the enfolding second US presidential debate with Professor Simon Jackman of the United States Studies Centre, in which Republican candidate Donald Trump has denied that he actually committed the acts of harassment that he claimed in the recently surfaced 2005 video and accused former president Bill Clinton, who is the husband of the Democrat candidate, of being abusive to women.

  • Devastation and death as Hurricane Matthew weakens
Haiti has begun three days of national mourning to remember hundreds of people killed by Hurricane Matthew. Now, attention is turning to the massive clean-up and recovery effort. Those on the ground say the true devastation is only now being realised, as some of the hardest hit regions slowly start to make contact with major cities. The death toll is also predicted to rise rapidly. Meanwhile, the massive storm has also claimed a number of lives in the United States, where it's caused widespread flooding.

  • Malcolm Turnbull confirms Government will establish banking tribunal
After this week's parliamentary grilling of Australia's big four banks, the Prime Minister has confirmed that the Government will establish a banking tribunal. The move comes as the Government continues to counter calls for a royal commission into banks, after the hearings were seen to only scratch the surface of banking scandals. But Malcolm Turnbull says the proposed tribunal will be a low-cost way for victims of alleged bad banking behaviour to seek justice.

  • Energy Ministers meet to negotiate national approach to future energy targets and security
State and territory energy ministers are meeting with their federal counterpart this lunchtime to nut out reforms aimed at ensuring a nationally consistent approach to energy targets in the future. The snap meeting follows a state-wide blackout across South Australia last week, which called into question energy security and renewables targets nationally. On the agenda: just what role the mix of renewables played in that state's mass power outage; but also the Federal Government’s push for one national renewable energy target.

The Government in Haiti says at least 260 people have been killed after Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful Caribbean storm in nearly a decade, hit earlier this week. The storm has caused severe damage and there are still some remote communities that officials and aid agencies haven't been able to reach. In the US, evacuations are underway in parts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina as the storm moves towards the area.

  • Turkish Australian group removed from anti-racism campaign membership
The Human Rights Commission has revoked the Australian Turkish Advocacy Alliance's membership of the commission's 'Racism. It Stops With Me' campaign. The campaign invites Australians to think about what they can do to counter racism in the community. The commission says that the alliance has acted inconsistently with the campaign's purpose; in particular, singling out Armenian Australians for racial criticism. Armenian Australian groups have welcomed the decision. The Turkish Advocacy Alliance says it is saddened that its membership has been revoked.
