What do you think of when you hear the words "human trafficking"? Far away Asian countries? Young women? Kid knapping by strangers? Amanda Blackwood is my guest this week to dispel all these incorrect assumptions and define what trafficking really is. She also tells her harrowing story of being trafficked multiple times by people she knew, including her fiancée. Not to worry though, after her escapes, she shares how she healed from such horrible trauma and helps others to do the same. We actually laughed quite a bit while talking about such a dark topic! Biography:

When Amanda finally managed to get away from the man who was trafficking her she was thirty-one years old and didn’t know what she’d gone through even had a name, much less how to deal with the pain of feeling like a broken person, unworthy of love and filled with so much anger. On a freezing cold day in 2018 she saw former trafficked people standing strong and showing their beautiful resiliency on a stage at an anti-trafficking event. At that moment she finally knew what her purpose in life would be.

Since then, Amanda has spoken on a multitude of stages, been interviewed by the Chicago Tribune, sold her art all over the country, been a keynote speaker at international summits, loaned her voice to multiple radio programs, and published over a dozen books. She launched two podcasts - one that focuses on interviewing other authors of trauma, and the other that discusses the long term consequences of trauma and how to fight back for a better life. She's a trauma recovery mentor, professional artist, accomplished public speaker, and a charity campaigns manager for MMA legend Frank Shamrock through ShamrockWay.org

[00:00:20] And so I'm going over to my neighbor's house Who has a pool. And so that's the exciting news for the week for me. The exciting news about the podcast is that we have a wonderful guest, Amanda Blackwood, and we are going to be talking about human trafficking. This is a very dark topic, so no kids in the room, obviously, but.

[00:01:02] She is an amazing lady. I'm going to tell you a little more about her. Trafficking is something that I am very passionate about eliminating and helping people to heal from human trafficking. [00:00:33] welcome back to the podcast. So glad that you're here. I know that you die hards that listen every week you might have noticed that I missed a week. Well, actually, I, I had it recorded. I just didn't edit it in time to get released on Wednesday. And the reason why is because it was my first week back at [00:01:00] work full time.

[00:01:02] And when I got home and sat on the couch and put my feet up, I was exhausted and I was actually dozing off on the couch. And so it was like that every day last week. And. So forgive me, I did not have the energy to edit the podcast in time. That's how it goes.

[00:01:23] Still recovering from my foot surgery. Today I have been doing some yard work with my regular sneakers on. I'm not wearing the orthopedic sandal that I was wearing for three weeks. I felt pretty good today, energy wise, and my foot was actually doing pretty well.

[00:01:46] It is 110 here, this week.

We are continuing our series of character studies in the Bible in the perspective of an abuse survivor. Today we are talking about a very difficult passage of Scripture: Judges 19, which is the story of the Levite and the concubine. Why is this horrific story included in the Bible? Why did they go to war with their own people? Did God condone these events? What practical application can we get out of this story? These questions and more will be answered. There is a trigger warning for this episode for sexual assault and kidnapping.

[00:00:33] Hello everybody. Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks for joining me today. I hope that you guys got through last podcast about the I B L P and the review of Shiny Happy people and about the Duggars. It was a difficult, yet important [00:01:00] episode to do, and it was a bit triggering I'm sure for a lot of you who have been through something similar. But I hope that now that this documentary is out that. People will start to see the man behind the curtain, so to speak. We need exposure for these cult groups because otherwise nobody would leave, nobody would get any healing.

[00:01:28] And these men like Bill Gothard would be more powerful.

[00:01:35] So what are we gonna talk about today? We are going to go through Judges 19, and this is called the Benjamite War. And if you're not familiar with that, you may be familiar with the Levite that had a concubine. So this is one of these [00:02:00] stories that is, horrifying, and I almost didn't want to do this particular chapter because it's hard and it's gross. And it's like, well, what am I gonna say to this narrative,

We're talking about the latest hot topic, the documentary Shiny Happy People. It exposes the Duggar secrets and the Bill Gothard's fundamentalist cult, the IBLP. What do they believe? What did Josh Duggar go to prison for? What's it like growing up on a reality show? How do you heal from such a religious cult? All these answers and more on our episode today. This week has sensitive content about rape and child abuse, which could trigger some listeners.

[00:00:33] Welcome back to the podcast. Glad I didn't scare any of you away with last week's episode on Abraham and Isaac. Tough content. I know. Now, this week I am going to do a review on Shiny Happy people. The documentary, I don't usually talk about hot topics on [00:01:00] this show, but it's all over social media and my advocacy groups, and people want to talk about this documentary.

[00:01:10] It actually hits close to home for me, so we're gonna talk about it. There's a lot to cover with this particular cult, but before we start though, I'm gonna give you an update on adventures in foot surgery. My cast comes off tomorrow. I am excited about that. Two weeks with this thing on and being on bedrest.

[00:01:43] Um, the majority of the time. I'm ready to get out of the house. I think I get a walking boot next, and I start physical therapy next week. Learning to walk with my toe surgery, I [00:02:00] learned a lot this time On the first surgery, uh, they gave me a walker to get around since it is a non-weight-bearing surgery, which means my foot cannot touch the ground.

[00:02:16] And it's not as easy as it sounds. I had very little pain the first week and no pain the second with my foo...

We are discussing the story of Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac on this week's show. Is there another perspective on this difficult narrative? Is Abraham a horrible parent? [00:00:33] Hello everybody. I'm coming to you live from the Winkler couch with my foot propped up on lots of pillows. Now I am not gonna show you the picture, my boot, you've all seen a boot before.

[00:00:51] But maybe later I can show you my scar when it gets, more healed up and I can take the boot off and wear regular shoes. [00:01:00] So, as you probably can gather that my foot surgery went well, very successful.

[00:01:10] I don't have any pain with some Advil and Tylenol. Overall. Everything went great. So I am still here to do a podcast episode with you.

[00:01:23] I'm bored anyway out of my mind, so

[00:01:29] why not, right? I can sleep, I can watch tv, surf Facebook, but. I'm gonna do a podcast episode for you, and I mentioned last week that we were going to do Abraham and Isaac, Abraham sacrificing Isaac, and I mentioned last week that I almost didn't do this one because it's difficult. It's not.

[00:01:58] It's not an easy study[00:02:00] because the majority of our society tends to think that this is child abuse. We're going to talk about that, but as always, God is recording things as they happen. And there are always lessons to be learned even in the difficult Bible passages. Even the ones we don't understand a hundred percent.

We are continuing our character studies in the Bible in the perspective of an abuse survivor. We are covering this week, patriarchs Abraham and Lot. We explore such questions such as: Abraham's treatment of his wife Sarah, Lot offering up his virgin daughters to an angry mob, an example of female sexual abuse in the Bible, and the timeless question: Is God loving and merciful in the Old Testament?

Abraham and Lot

[00:00:33] Everybody, how are you guys doing? What's up? Come on in. Coming to you from Winkler Living Room. I have successfully completed my first surgery this past week. It went really well. Better than I anticipated. Everybody was wonderful at the hospital and I have no pain or, [00:01:00] um, postprocedure bleeding.

[00:01:02] And so I was very happy about that. And I do have another surgery coming up on Tuesday. Tuesday will be doing surgery on my right foot.

[00:01:13] And then when that's healed up, most likely the end of July, we'll be doing my left foot. And

[00:01:21] so I will be on bedrest for two weeks starting on Tuesday. I have spent the last week or so trying to get all of the garden and the yard done. So Brian doesn't have much to do. I do have a neighbor who's a master gardener, and she's gonna come in and check things to make sure that nothing's dying out there.

[00:01:46] Brian will be watering. You can do the watering without any problems. And, uh, my neighbor's also bringing us some food, some leftovers. So Brian does not have to cook every night or [00:02:00] they'll just make breakfast in the morning and, uh, we'll have something to reheat at night. That's a big blessing. And my Bible study group, they gave me some gift cards to Uber Eats and a pizza joint nearby, and that's a blessing.

Bio:

Scott Distler is the lead pastor of E free church with campuses in Gaylord and Salt St. Marie, Michigan, as well as vibrant online campus. He is also the Bible teacher on the Folks Listen television broadcast seen weekly in 53 counties throughout Northern Michigan. Scott is a graduate of Liberty University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pastoral Ministries, and a master of Arts degree in religion. Scott has served as a pastor for over 33 years in churches in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and now Michigan. Scott's passion is leading his local church in saturating northern Michigan with the gospel of Jesus Christ by meeting as many people as possible right where they are, and moving them to where God wants them to be.

[00:00:37] We're on the story of Joseph part two, and we're gonna do a review on Joseph. I do want you to go back to part one if you didn't listen to it, cause you'll miss some of the stuff. If you're not familiar with Joseph, you're definitely going to be lost.

[00:00:59] an [00:01:00] update for today on the website, I was just working with my webmaster Etana and the website is still down. We worked on it three hours today. Jet Pack gave me a backup of my site and somehow it didn't work. We tried everything, and so we're gonna have to ask Ionas and Jet Pack for help. I don't know. I don't know what else there is to do, but I am recording my episodes and I'm able to put them on the podcast platforms.

[00:01:40] Although you will notice that, for instance, if you go on Apple Podcasts, it only shows two episodes, whereas this is the hundred and 34th episode, it erased all of my previous episodes. [00:02:00] Spotify is, I don't know what's wrong with Spotify, but it hasn't shown my podcast episodes since Easter.

Hello everybody. Welcome to the podcast. Thank you so much for supporting me. It's been a crazy few weeks, let me tell you. But first I wanted to mention new YouTube subscriber, Pat Warren has subscribed. Thank you so much, Pat. Welcome. I hope you get a blessing from the episodes. And so I do a little housekeeping today as I have the last few weeks.

I have transitioned from the old web hosting to the new one, but not to get too technical, but the backup for my site from my old host was incomplete. And so was not able to transfer over. So basically, I am having to start over. Now, I had some pages of my website saved, but the, the blog, the podcast page, my store, my music page, they're gone.

I have to input everything back in there, all over again. Uh, today I finished resetting up the podcast feed. Uh, so it's been a bit of a nightmare. I was really frustrated and discouraged yesterday. My wood master, who was awesome, Etana Holowinko from Jazz Society, she's been helping me.

And this is what she said. I wish that I could wave a magic wand and fix everything, but I can't. Uh, it is unfortunate that I lost all the data, but I do have some of the pages. I do have my, all my podcasts are all saved on my computer. My music saved on the computer. Just gonna take some time to put everything on there.

So when you go to my website, you will see my site is under construction, so that's what that is. But you will be able to, view all of the podcasts on the YouTube channel. Hasn't affected that. I do have last week's podcast on the audio feeds, it just shows that I don't have any previous podcasts, so it's kinda weird until I add them all back in...
