The day is finally here. You've been listening to my story for many weeks now. Hear about the events leading to my departure. Making the decision to leave
[00:00:00] Welcome to the Wounds of the Faithful Podcast. Brought to you by DSW Ministries. Your host is singer songwriter, speaker and domestic violence advocate, Diana Winkler. She is passionate about helping survivors in the church heal from domestic violence and abuse and trauma. This podcast is not a substitute for professional counseling or qualified medical help.
    [00:00:26] Now here is Diana.
[00:00:30] Hi, everyone. Come on in. Get a holiday beverage of your choice and come and sit for a spell. Take a deep breath, unc unclench your jaw. Let's talk about the holidays, which we are in the midst of. I'm not doing a holiday episode this year. I have done one last year, [00:01:00] which you can go back and listen to. But what I will say about the holidays is to take care of yourself. Make sure that you are establishing boundaries, and forcing those boundaries, and you don't have to do everything that the holidays conjurs up.
[00:01:20] You don't have to fulfill all those expectations of what our society deems as Christmas. You can have a quiet celebration with just your family, with just yourself. You don't have to go into debt for Christmas. Your kids don't have to have the latest and greatest gadget or toy. The holidays are supposed to be about Jesus, and he kind of gets pushed out of the way. But about self.
[00:01:51] You don't have to go to those Christmas dinners if you're not feeling up to it or you don't want to interact with [00:02:00] people, your relatives, your friends, your church, whatever. You decide how you're going to celebrate and you stick to that. Make your own traditions. Don't follow everybody else's.

  • EP 111: My Story: Part 18: How to Sabotage and Kill Your Own Church
We're coming to the end of the tunnel, a very dark, long tunnel. This week on my story I relive more spiritual abuse related to the church plant that turned into the Twighlight Zone instead of a place of worship. Hear about the untrained pastor with the billboard on the back of his truck, who didn't believe in small talk, who preached the same message every Sunday, and systematically chased everyone away from his church, including us. At the end of the episode, I feature my new Christmas recording, Hallelujah, Light Has Come.

Transcript: How To Sabotage And Kill Your Own Church
[00:00:33] Welcome back. We've made it to part 18 of my story, almost to the end of this thing. And I've been hearing from you guys some feedback on my story, and I wanted to talk about that for a minute. One of the things that somebody had given on feedback on for the podcast is that [00:01:00] my intro is too long.
[00:01:01] I'm a podcaster because I like to talk, so maybe sometimes I talk too much. But I am working on that. And I am working on some technical components that you guys have told me about. I'm getting some help for that. So stay tuned for some improvements if you've noticed. Glitchy on the podcast.
[00:01:27] I am trying to provide the best podcast for you as possible. One other, a couple of the things that were mentioned were that I have a monotone voice sometimes.
[00:01:41] Yes, I do. I am trying to be transparent.
[00:01:46] I come to the podcast as I am, this is me. This is what you're gonna hear when you have a conversation with me. It's hard to talk to an empty room, talk to a camera. And people have pointed out, once the [00:02:00] guest comes on, then you're very excited and you're louder. That's because I feed off of the energy of the other person. I wanna make my guests feel welcome. And give them a good interview. And so I am working on that.
[00:02:18] With telling my story. A couple people have mentioned that if you're wa...

  • EP 110: My Story: Part 17: If You Would Just Submit To Your Husband
The saga continues this week on my story. See what happens when you start a church in a strip mall. We meet some of the church members who would join us. I continue recalling the abuse behind the scenes, including the speculations behind our non-existent love life. There are many examples of financial abuse, emotional abuse, spiritual abuse, isolation, and unhealthy patterns of married sex. I end the episode with a Christmas song I recorded, Candlelight Carol.

[00:00:28] Hello everyone. I am hoping that you survived Thanksgiving. I am very thankful for you out there listening and watching. We have the holidays to contend with as always, but we can get through this together. Now you remember Wayne Styles, who I mentioned frequently on the show. He was on the podcast last year [00:01:00] and he has those virtual tours to the holy lands. And more importantly, he is an excellent Bible teacher. Anyway, if you've been hesitating on getting his virtual videos, Wayne has just created brand new DVDs that are 20 bucks, includes five different tours on a disc. So I myself bought four of them for Christmas gifts.
[00:01:34] I wanted to give one to my pastor and then another our Pastor Emeretus and one to my Bible study teacher and one I'm going to give away as a bonus for you guys. So please be on the lookout for that as soon as I get them in, which will be in a couple of days, [00:02:00] I'll be doing the giveaway for the videos.
[00:02:03] I highly recommend Wayne's virtual trips to the Holy Lands,

  • EP 109: My Story: Part 16: What’s It Like To Be Fired From A Church?
Thank you for continuing with me on the next chapter of my story. I start out clarifying what went down when the church fired me, and the fallout from that. I fill in the rest of that time period with what happened at home behind the scenes, including nearly losing everything on a business venture, my ex sabotaging expressions of my musical gifts and other emotional abuses, and my dogs who helped me cope. I end with news of my new Christmas recording to be released next week!

[00:00:00] Diana Winkler: Hello everyone. Welcome back once again to the podcast. Thanks for coming back and listening to my story being a part of my journey.
[00:00:18] I've had some feedback on my story that I've been telling.
[00:00:23] And people ask me, why should you tell your story? Why go back and rehash all of this old stuff that you went through? Why don't you just move forward? That's a really good question. I have moved forward. But for you to move forward as an abuse survivor, you have to process what you went through.
[00:00:54] Now, I have done that with Mending the Soul, and through some counseling, [00:01:00] and I am much further on my journey than I was 10 years ago. I am able to help other people at this point because I have healed
[00:01:15] to a certain extent. Now, in many soul groups, one of the exercises that we do is tell our story. Some of my participants have never told anyone their story. Not another living soul. And this is part of acknowledging what you went through. This is part of discovering what happened, recognizing that what happened to you was abuse and that it wasn't your fault.
[00:01:58] There are many different [00:02:00] kinds of abuses too. As you listen to my story is very different than other people's stories. But what happens when you tell your story in a safe environment, people that you can trust, is that the power that it held over you, it's no longer there. Now, that sounds very simplistic, but
[00:02:29] Start at that starting line and let that story out. Have the bravery to say your story and process ...

  • EP 108: My Story: Part 15: When The Church Staff Doesn’t Like You
Welcome back to My Story series on the podcast. This week I recall the good, the bad, and the ugly about the time I was on staff at a church. I hated the politics, the backbiting, gossip, and legalism that went on behind the scenes. I explain why I haven't been to a ladies retreat in 15 years and the times I was being traumatized on Sunday mornings before I got up to sing. In the midst of it all, I had to pretend that everything was perfect at home. At the end of the podcast, I feature my new song, O Divin Redempteur, so be sure to listen until the end.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. Continuing with my story today. This is part 15, so if you haven't heard the rest of my story, you might be missing some really important relevant events. So go back and listen to previous episodes. They're all labeled "My Story" and they are numbered in order.I did cover my childhood abuse by a school counselor, high school years, in college, getting saved, getting called into the ministry, et cetera. If you don't wanna listen to all of them, I would say go back to, at least when I started dating my ex. To get an accurate picture of where I'm at right now. When telling your story, it is really challenging to put the events together, what to leave out. It's also really hard to relive these memories and describe them the way that they happen to me. That's pretty typical for a survivor. We all have our different stories. They are all valid. Some are more severe than others, but unless you've experienced certain things like gaslighting, manipulation, and emotional abuse, you don't realize how hard it is to set the scene with all its complicatedtwists and turns and miscellaneous tidbits that drive you nuts, but you don't know how to fit it into the narrative.

  • EP 107: My Story: Part 14: When You Think That Moving Will Give You A Fresh Start
We are coming back to finish My Story series. We left off leaving our church in the inner city, and taking advantage of a job transfer to move out West. I talk about the adjustments that had to be made, being near my parents, finding a church to serve in. I also discover that the same abuse followed me across the country. If you haven't listened to the rest of my story so far, I recommend listening to the previous episodes numbered and labeled "My Story". I also have my newest song recording at the end of the podcast, called O Divine Redeemer. So be sure to stay until the end!

I've been reading in Daniel recently, and a verse that I have never seen before was that, Twice. In fact, in the Book of Daniel, [00:01:00] God sends an angel with a message to tell Daniel that he is greatly loved. Wouldn't you like to get a message like that? I know, I would! It was two ladies in my Bible study who were sisters. They lost their mom to a rare cancer and it was terrible. She was diagnosed and died within four [00:02:00] months, and so I went to the memorial to support the girls.

Last, but not least, we have my own Pastor, Kyle Fox, on the show talking about why it is important to study the Scriptures for yourself, but also why you need a godly community for support. Bio:
In March of 2016 I was diagnosed with liver disease, Cirrhosis to be exact. I don’t even drink and here I was labeled with the one disease that never entered my mind as a possibility. This past Spring I was incredibly ill and so frustrated. Here I was trying to live a life pleasing to the Lord, to share His love with the world and now I was facing possible liver transplant, my hair falling out, infertility, anemia, fibroids, potassium deficiency, enlarged spleen, gall stones and a 40% chance of death in the next five years.
My mother swooped in with prayers and a plan. My community rallied around me. My husband was a rock and my father a source of constant encouragement. The help that Jon and I received were the hands of Jesus on the earth. The doctors had no explanation as to why the illness had progressed so far so fast, maybe it was from fatty liver disease or maybe it is some exotic autoimmune issue. Nobody seems to know, all I could do was trust the Father in the midst of what seemed like an “untrustable” situation.
In the midst of this storm I have seen the face of God. I have been carried by the prayers of the righteous. And most importantly I’ve clung to the fact that God still heals today. My empty unfilled Diabetes and High Blood Pressure medicine bottles are a sign of that. The doctor reports that my liver is functioning and there is nothing to do but watch it, spurs me to reply, that I watch only for the manifestation of my healing to be revealed. My clothes are too big and the weight I use to carry has diminished since changing my entire nutritional lifestyle. And I feel great, look pretty cute to. If you knew how sick I was you would rejoice with me that my sluggish liver is starting to trot! Praise the Lord!
But sometimes those nasty little doubts whisper to my mind. So what do you do? First you call the devil a lie, proclaim the Word of God over your life and stand flat footed on the promises of Psalm 118 verse 17 – I shall not die but live to proclaim the work of the Lord! And did you know the liver is the only organ that can regenerate, that’s what I’m experiencing, a creative miracle in my own body!
Then you think of Morgan Freeman. One of his most famous movie lines is from the Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” Being sick will make you take a long look at your life and I saw some things I didn’t like. Fear that hindered me from pursuing my dreams full out, I saw missed opportunities, many moments I had lived unaware of the presence, the power and the beauty of the Lord.
And I decided no more… In the midst of my sickness, the Lord whispered to me to live! Live with joy, with passion, with a thankful heart and the belief that He can do all things and so the entire focus of Broken Box Ministries has changed. The Lord will satisfy me with long life and show me His salvation! And each moment I have I plan to live joyfully, thankfully and prayerfully. My new mission, the desire of my heart, is to teach others to do the same thing.
