Live from the Motor City, the hefty sound of a fierce techno DJ who’s making waves in the American scene.

Last summer, Dani Lehman completely blew us away with a guest set for the Bunker’s biweekly radio show. The rising selector, who’s bounced between New York, Miami and Los Angeles but currently calls Detroit home, proved beyond a shadow of a doubt why she’s so busy these days — though she spins dark, brooding techno, she plays it with a uplifting energy that’s utterly contagious. Lehman was a natural choice for Bunker founder Bryan Kasenic to have on his daily live show from Detroit ahead of Movement 2018 — we’re thrilled she’s joining us with a fathoms-deep DJ set to help kick off a week of Motor City programming.

A pair of rising New York-based producers and DJs beam their sounds out into the world, live with Bryan Kasenic from our NYC studio.

This week, Bunker founder Bryan Kasenic sheds some light on two New York-based up-and-comers with deep ties to the party and label. Jasen Loveland (real name: not Jasen Loveland) is something of a mystery, though releases for Interdimensional Transmissions and Acid Camp, along with a track included on the 15 Years of The Bunker compilation released earlier this year, hint at a musical mind steeped in classic dance-music psychedelia. He’s joined on this broadcast by rrao, AKA Turiya Madireddi, another alum of the Bunker’s anniversary compilation who’s increasingly active in New York’s electronic scene, both as a solo artist and in close collaboration with Clay Wilson. Each guest will DJ and spend a bit of time on the mic with Bryan discussing where things are headed.

One of Bryan Kasenic’s key label artists plays a deep techno DJ set from the studio to help tease the imminent release of his next EP.

Clay Wilson has been a part of the Bunker New York label since Bryan Kasenic started releasing music in 2014 – along with the likes of Leisure Muffin and Voices from the Lake, Wilson was one of the first artists to sign to the label. But the Bunker has been as important to Wilson as he’s been to the Brooklyn-based techno institution these past few years: Going to the party proved deeply influential to his own music, with the sounds and aesthetics he encountered there blending with his own training in jazz and improvisation to form a unique sonic signature. The Osho EP, Wilson’s first full release since 2015, is due out on the Bunker New York this month — to celebrate, he’ll join us this week for an ultra-deep DJ set and conversation from our NYC studio.

The Motor City disco fiend joins Bryan Kasenic to stitch together a set of old-school wonders from Detroit and Chicago.

Jeffrey Sfire hails from Detroit and resides there currently, but Chicago looms large in his musical mind. He moved to the Windy City at 18 and got lost in its inimitable dance music, and no matter where DJing has taken him, he’s always returned to it. This episode of the Bunker marks the third time Sfire has played for the Bunker on Red Bull Radio – he’s become a fixture of Bryan Kasenic’s Detroit broadcasts, having played once with Mike Servito and again with Ian Clark as the live electronic duo Looky Looky – but this is the first time he’s had the full two hours to stretch out behind the decks. You’re in for a treat: Expect the multifaceted, jackin’ sound of Chicago, as filtered through the dancefloor vibes of Detroit, Berlin and New York.

Boris Brenecki and John Selway join label boss Nicole Brenecki and host Bryan Kasenic for a celebration of the rising NYC techno imprint.

What is the sound of New York techno? Nicole Brenecki’s New York Trax imprint isn’t trying to offer the be-all end-all statement on the topic, but the label’s name makes sense: New York Trax releases music that is as hard, fast and gritty as this city. A New York native who spent much of her life living in Europe, with about eight years promoting hardcore techno events overseas, Nicole started the label after returning to the States and looking for a way to get involved in her hometown’s scene. Over the last two years, she’s helped deliver a truly fresh take on contemporary techno; from studio to pressing plant, everything is made entirely within the city limits. To help New York Trax celebrate its second year, the Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic has invited Nicole and a pair of the label’s key artists – Boris Brenecki and John Selway – to share some DJ sets and insights.

The first artist signed to the Bunker New York returns to our NYC studio for an episode dedicated to live performance.

Leisure Muffin, AKA Michael Hopkins, has been a part of the Bunker’s extended family for ages. Back in 2014, when the New York techno institution was looking to start a label, it made sense that Hopkins’ music would comprise the first release. Though Hopkins was a veteran known both for his solo synth performances and those with the late Buchla Music Easel enthusiast Charles Cohen, The Bunker New York 001 was his first – and, to date, only – release. (A new Leisure Muffin track made the cut on the recent 15 Years of the Bunker compilation, however.) Live performance is definitely the way to experience all that is Leisure Muffin, and Hopkins is back on the radio with Bryan Kasenic this week to discuss how he plays, and he presents recordings from a couple of recent live sets you won’t hear anywhere else: One where he played solo, and another performed in tandem with recent Bunker signee Abby Echiverri.

Brooklyn synthesist Antenes and Beijing mover-and-shaker Zhiqi join Bryan Kasenic in our NYC studio for a globe-spanning techno showcase.

In a borough heaving with synth manipulators, Brooklyn’s Antenes stands out for her extensive knowledge of electronic music’s nuts and bolts. Her studio is as much a workshop as a place for recording – she makes her own synths and sequencers, often utilizing repurposed vintage telephone equipment to forge wholly unique pieces of gear. (That work has led to residencies at institutions like Issue Project Room and Bell Labs, and lectures and workshops at CalArts and Oberlin.) You don’t have to be an electrical engineer to appreciate her work, though — since her ear-catching debut on L.I.E.S. in 2015, Antenes has been busy in the techno world as a DJ, live performer and producer, and this year joined the Bunker for a soon-to-be-released record under the name Antemeridian. She’ll be joined by Zhiqi of Beijing’s Shadowplay, who’s shared the booth with artists like Lena Willikens, Dr. Rubenstein, Fred P and Kangding Ray.

The veteran DJ and producer on her multifaceted career, plus a party-starting DJ set live from our NYC studio.

Very few people in house and techno have enjoyed as diverse a career as Brooklyn’s Lauren Flax – a quick perusal of her credits as a producer, remixer and collaborator turns up names such as Sia, Tricky, They Might Be Giants and Le Tigre, along with a range of club artists from Azari & III to Kim Ann Foxman. Flax is a dance music head and prolific party-starter, whose deeply felt productions and DJ sets have taken her from San Francisco to Berlin and all points in between, not to mention practically every club that’s opened in New York over the last decade or two. On this edition of the Bunker NY, Flax shows off her range behind the decks and takes Bryan Kasenic through several of the stories she’s picked up along the way.

The artists behind the first two releases on Mysteries of the Deep’s newly launched label tease out experimental electronics, live from NYC.

Founded in 2011 by Grant Aaron as a platform for ambient music and the rotating cast of DJs who obsess over it, Mysteries of the Deep began as a podcast that’s since evolved into one of New York’s most unique events. As of January 2018, it’s now a record label too, dedicated to the sort of cosmic, textural compositions that have long been at the heart of the project. To mark the launch of the label, the Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic will showcase the first artists signed to the label. Brooklyn’s Certain Creatures, whose second album Nasadiya Sukta is Mysteries of the Deep’s first release, and William Selman, a Portland-based artist whose next record is forthcoming for the label, will both play live sets and sit down for a chat.

Brooklyn’s techno institution travels to Mumbai for a special broadcast featuring two of the Indian city’s best DJs.

Bryan Kasenic typically records his biweekly radio broadcasts a few subway stops from the Bunker’s Brooklyn headquarters; to get to the studio for this edition, he’ll take a couple of long-haul flights to Mumbai. Kasenic is in town to kick off a string of Indian tour dates with Mike Servito and Antenes, and he’ll get things started with a radio show featuring locals Bhish and Chhabb. Bhish runs Mumbai’s Regenerate, an events promotion and booking agency dedicated to bringing Indian club audiences the sort of heady electronic music he discovered while living abroad in the UK. He’s promoted Bunker events in India and contributed to its long-running podcast, and in September 2017, Kasenic gave Bhish his North American DJ debut at the party in Brooklyn. Chhabb is another longtime advocate for deep dance music in Mumbai, a regular on Regenerate lineups and, like Bhish, a keen studio head with tracks on the way for the Bunker label. Get to know these two members of the Bunker’s increasingly international family – both will spin DJ sets and spend some time on the mic.
