The Blackest Ever Black-affiliated purveyor of post-punk and dark wave-infused techno steps into our Los Angeles studio for a DJ set.

Camella Lobo’s music as Tropic of Cancer is shrouded in expertly crafted darkness – an odd fit, perhaps, for the sunny locale in which she’s making it. But the sound she’s tapped into – a meeting point between post-punk, synth pop and techno, backed up with Lobo’s ethereally processed vocals – feels universal, and her releases for labels like Blackest Ever Black and Downwards have earned her fans well beyond LA. Laying low since 2015’s gorgeously synthetic Stop Suffering EP, Tropic of Cancer has reemerged this year in the form of collaborative tracks with Ancient Methods and Ike Yard. In the studio with the Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic kicking off a week of broadcasts from LA, Lobo will give us an update on what she’s got cooking, punctuated by selections from her record bag.

In the nearly 15 years that Bryan Kasenic has been running the Bunker, he’s worn a lot of hats: Promoter, agent, label owner, radio host (obviously). Doing all of the above has forced him to stay at the forefront of new electronic music, and a not-unpleasant byproduct is that he’s also a cracking DJ – it’s a side of what he does that’s rarely been showcased on his two years of biweekly broadcasts on Red Bull Radio. Live from our NYC studio this week, for the first time he will be taking over the entire two-hour slot, playing current favorites from his DJ bag, new cuts from the Bunker label and whatever else he sees fit to blast out into the world.

The rising Brooklyn DJ and Sublimate resident discusses his next moves and showcases his signature sound.

As much as anyone in Brooklyn’s dance music scene, Turtle Bugg is fully immersed in the music. He spends his days tending to the proudly disorganized record stacks at the infamously grimy secondhand shop the Thing, and his off hours DJing across the borough (most notably as a resident at the roving party Sublimate) and running Basement Floor Records with his Soul 2 Seoul partner Phil Chung. The New Jersey native is constantly on the trail of killer tracks and novel combinations thereof. On this edition of the Bunker NY, Turtle Bugg takes Bryan Kasenic back to the beginnings of his musical obsession (catching Parliament/Funkadelic at the tender age of ten is never a bad thing), shares some nausea-inducing stories from the Thing, discusses his nascent production career and shares his thoughts on the state of dance music in New York. He bookends the interview with a pair of driving, funked-up, all-vinyl DJ sets.

Sustain-Release cofounder Aurora Halal and deep techno craftsman Relaxer (formerly Ital) touch down in our NYC studio for gripping DJ sets.

Though both have roots in Washington, DC, Aurora Halal and Daniel Martin-McCormick have become indelibly associated with techno in Brooklyn, the borough where they’ve been producing, DJing and throwing parties for the better part of the last decade. Though they regularly play international gigs, for the last three years their attention has turned to a mammoth project that’s closer to home: Sustain-Release, the weekender Halal cofounded with Zara Wladawsky; Martin-McCormick has been involved since the beginning. On this edition of the Bunker NY on Red Bull Radio, the pair discuss this year’s campout and the philosophy that drives one of the best weekends in American dance music. Martin-McCormick also sheds light on his change of alias – releasing as Ital since 2011, he’s recently thrown his full production, live and DJing force behind the name Relaxer.

Ahead of a new album with Cesar Merveille, the Visionquest mainstay plays an adventurous DJ set that shows off his experimental side.

A Detroit-born DJ and producer who’s logged years in Berlin, London and New York, Ryan Crosson is best known as a member of Visionquest, the label and collective he runs with Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves. For anyone who’s pegged Crosson as a purely house and techno guy though, his appearance on this week’s Bunker broadcast might come as a surprise: In honor of his second album of electronic abstractions made in collaboration with his longtime collaborator and friend Cesar Merveille, coming this fall, Crosson plays a gorgeously layered set culled from the experimental side of his record collection. Expect shimmering ambient records, spoken-word overlays and some advance cuts from the Crosson Merveille collab. Plus an interview with old friend where Bunker founder Bryan Kasenic dives into their shared history.

The ghettotech pioneer hops on the decks in our Detroit studio, offering a window into the influential style from the city that birthed it.

Ghettotech, a distinctly Detroit dance music style blending the low-end of Miami bass with the drive of techno, is often pigeonholed as a style hingeing on obscene lyrics. To hear ghettotech stalwart DJ Godfather tell it, that sells it supremely short – it’s a thrilling and highly influential genre all its own, backed up by an enviably DIY ethos to selling records and rocking parties. Following an appearance at a massive Bunker event in 2015, which found him sharing the bill with none other than Jeff Mills, Godfather returns to the fold as Bryan Kasenic wraps up his summer residency at our Motor City radio studio. He plays a pair of hefty DJ sets bookending an interview that touches on his production origins, ghettotech’s massive appeal in Detroit and perfecting the art of distributing vinyl from the trunk of your car.

Producer, DJ, music educator, legendary record store clerk, Sun Ra aficionado, all-around innovative figure in techno — where to begin with Detroit’s Mike Huckaby? His decades-spanning discography – on labels such as Harmonie Park, Sushitech, Tresor and Third Ear – might be a good place to start. That’s exactly what we’ll get when Huckaby drops by our Motor City studio to appear live with Bunker founder Bryan Kasenic. He has promised us two hours of nothing but his own productions, plus ample time spent in conversation with Kasenic putting it all in context.

A superb selector from New York’s Aphotic party and LA’s Dirty Epic crew, the Detroit transplant drops a blistering techno set.

“I like techno,” reads the succinct bio on Dani Lehman’s SoundCloud page. “Forget the rest.” It’s actually a fairly accurate line on where she’s at these days. Following periods spent in New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and residencies for the likes of Dirty Epic and Aphotic, the selector touched down in the Motor City with the aim of fully embracing the music she loves. That music is immersive, pitch-black techno, and more than at any other time in her career, she’s had the freedom to play it and produce it without compromise. From our studios in Detroit, The Bunker’s Bryan Kasenic catches up with Lehman about the winding path that’s taken her to this moment, and she delivers an impressively hefty DJ set.

The longtime Bunker resident and world-renowned techno selector mixes live and speaks his mind from our studio in his hometown of Detroit.

A resident DJ and integral part of The Bunker since the Subtonic days, Detroit native and current Berlin resident Derek Plaslaiko should need no introduction to anyone who’s followed Bryan Kasenic’s party/agency/label through the years – so we’ll skip the formalities and jump right to the setup. Derek and Bryan both happen to be in Detroit on Derek’s birthday, which is also the day Bryan was planning a live broadcast from our radio studio there. This needle pretty much threaded itself. If you’ve heard Derek on our airwaves before, then you know what to expect from the first of five Bunker broadcasts from Detroit this summer: deep music nerdery, balls-to-the-wall party-starting and plenty of top banter from one of techno’s liveliest characters.

Promoter Seva Granik and residents Volvox and Mary Yuzovskaya present the sound and ethos of Brooklyn’s techno after-hours institution.

Unter is German for “under,” and Berlin’s subterranean techno scene is an obvious influence on the party that nightlife veteran Seva Granik has been throwing since 2015. Their events go epically late, have featured such clued-in Berlin bookings as Marcel Fengler and Kobosil, and from open to close, the 4/4 never really lets up. But Unter has done more than give New York a techno party that can tide over black-clad local ravers until their next Berghain pilgrimage – it’s become an institution in and of itself, and its residents are fast becoming as much of a selling point as the special guests. Last year, The Bunker and Unter collaborated a pair of 36-hour parties that were high points for both promoters. They’ll only have two hours together in our NYC studios on this edition of The Bunker’s biweekly radio show, but they’ll make the most of it: residents Volvox and Mary Yuzovskaya will each play DJ sets, and Granik will join in for a roundtable discussion of the party, the scene surrounding it and much more.
