In 1936 a story written by H.P. Lovecraft, titled “A Shadow Out of Time”, was published in an issue of the science fiction magazine Astounding Stories. The story described a race of extraterrestrial beings who tasked themselves with exploring all of history by projecting their conscious minds into both the past and the future. A very similar task was alleged to have been one of the objectives of a secret military project based out of southeastern New York. Besides time travel, experiments in mind control and interplanetary travel were also claimed to have been accomplished within the underground facilities of the now-defunct Air Force Base. Testimonies of those who claimed to have been subjects of these bizarre experiments say they were brainwashed or had their memories altered in order to maintain the secrecy of the project. Lucy Ludwell inherited her father’s Virginia residence in 1767. At the time, she was living as a member of the social elite in London with her husband, John Paradise. Although John had been a linguist and scholar of some note, the couple had never seen a substantial improvement in their financial standing. Upon John’s untimely death. Lucy was left near destitute and forced to depart London for the residence her father had left her in the old colonial capital of Virginia.  Neighbors and community members took notice of Lucy’s eccentricities like excessive bathing and aimless carriage rides that never left her back porch. Her strange behaviors were seen as indicators of insanity and the community had her committed to the Public Hospital for Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds. She lingered within its walls for two years before committing suicide. Since then, visitors and those who have stayed within the Ludwell-Paradise house have said they still hear the sound of a woman bathing despite the bathroom being empty. Tuberculosis, also known as the Great White Plague, had killed one in seven people that had ever lived by the early 19th century. A disease that was once thought to be genetic, it became a scourge that would rise to a peak in places like Europe where it would account for 25% of all deaths. Before modern medicine produced a vaccine, there were very few options for those who would display symptoms of the wasting disease. The most humane treatment was to sequester a patient to one of the many sanitoriums that had been built in the early 20th century. Among these was a facility opened in Louisville, Kentucky to accommodate victims of the sudden outbreak of tuberculosis in the Jefferson County area. The building, originally built to house 50-60 patients, was eventually renovated and expanded to be able to handle up to 400 patients. Patients who suffered from the ravages of the disease and sometimes were subjected to barbaric experimental treatments. In 2004 the USS Nimitz carrier strike group investigated a group of unusual radar signatures off the coast of southern California. Aircraft from the carrier were deployed to obtain visual confirmation on these craft that had been puzzling the radar operators in the area for the last several days. One of these flights would capture infrared footage of what appeared to be a supremely maneuverable craft that outpaced the combat aircraft sent to intercept it. It would be 13 years until this footage was released alongside a New York Times article that provided insight into the US government’s 5 year long, 20 million dollar investigation into UFOs.
