Theory Underground

From the first time Slavoj Žižek visited Theory Underground, to commemorate our 1 year anniversary! Now being released as a stand-alone video and podcast episode. In the previous visit to TU we introduced Slavoj to the ideas of Nick Land, who he then wrote an article about. In this interview, we talk about the philosophical concept of The Event, Slavoj calls Underground Theory (our first collaborative volume) "my bible," he says nice things about the concept of timenergy (which he then fleshes out in the foreword to McKerracher's book Timenergy: Why You Have No Time or Energy. Finally, Slavoj agrees to debate Nick Land. We are still waiting to hear back from Land, as he has been on vacation for a few months. He DID say he would get back to us after vacation, so stay tuned!

THIS ONE IS AN AMAZING VIDEO SO PLEASE WATCH ON YT: https://youtu.be/d-FhCfjTPDk

Ivan Illich is the most important thinker of institutions, technology, tools, and the human condition who got overhyped while simultaneously misunderstood and then eclipsed by Foucault and Habermas on the one side, and Freire, hooks, and Giroux on the other. We're calling for a critical, sincere, and earnest return to Ivan Illich. Bryan Weeks, one of the core TU instructors (who co-taught The Idea of the University course) has put this together and will be leading lectures and discussions around the texts he considers to be most essential to understanding Illich on his own terms but for our times.

Douglas (Doug) Lain of Sublation Media was here before there was an online theory scene to speak of, much less one that was considered "Left." Dave and Nance bring him on to talk about the Left, what he means by this term, his time in the scene, and his vision for a way forward. This includes a critical defense of anti-establishment (or "populist") liberals like Russel Brand, Matt Tiabbi, and Glenn Greenwald. (Something Dave and Nance appreciate Doug for to no end!)

What is the difference between "class" politics and "universal" politics? Why does it matter? What goals ought we to have when thinking about the future? We get into all these questions and more on a special episode with Dr. Christine Louis-Dit-Sully.

Dr. Christine Louis-Dit-Sully is the author of Transcending Racial Divisions: Will You Stand By Me? she has two PhDs and a very low tolerance for identity politics, whether those be left OR right.

Also, from the brainstorm for this description, Nance was like: "Busking at the end of history | What is really going on | Plans for the future | "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.""
