  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #15 and #16

Two great issues for you this time as Morrison charts the agony of the human (and dolphin) condition on a graph (where the X-axis is social, the Y-axis is existential). In #15, Buddy (and friends) plunge headlong into the deep waters of political violence and cultural imperialism. In #16, time and mortality themselves take the lead role in bedeviling our players. There's no shortage of things to talk about, and very little to feel certain about (other than the emotional impact of these two very different tales). The discussion ranges widely, even encompassing several films by one of the great unsung directors of the Studio Age (William Dieterle).

Speaking of William Dieterle - check out Elise's essay on the brilliant Portrait of Jennie (1948) in (online) issue #58 of Bright Wall/Dark Room

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #13 and #14

There's a lot going on in issues #13 and #14 and Elise & Dave spare no temporal expense in their discussion! Morrison's infinitely egressing narrative expands to encompass explicit political critique and a genuinely unnerving domestic haunting. And the whole thing's reframed by the sudden appearance of a new(?) diegetic layer. The lettercols are filled with conservative pushback, causing your hosts to revisit the animal testing debate and sparking some musings on the usefulness of PETA. Dave exults in the glories of issue #14. Also: an email from new listener Xavi!

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #11 and #12

The Crisis-straddling origin fun continues with Animal Man #11 and #12. The aliens make their move, performing some snazzy edits on the continuum and applying a well-deserved eraser to Orientalism; Buddy learns some new tricks; Ellen forgets her kids and disappears, leaving a shattered coffee cup on the linoleum; terrible times are coming. "He sure gave me clever radiation."

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #9, #10 (and Secret Origins #39)

Sorry we're a bit late this week, but Elise and Dave had a lot to digest here, what with the unprecedented narratological developments Morrison began cooking up for Animal Man's Post-Crisis (and Pre-Crisis? How about Pan-Crisis?) origin epic. Let's unravel, shall we?

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #7 and #8

The series continues its Invasion!-induced episodic phase in issues #7 and #8. First up, we get the Red Mask, a Morrisonian take on a Watchmanesque sadsack; then it's time to meet the new, improved, 100% more Glaswegian post-Crisis Mirror Master! Dave drops some none-too subtle hints about the shadowy shard of Buddy lurking in the Bakers' bushes, we marvel at the processing power of the TRS-80, and James Highwater appears on a mesa, wondering what it's all about. A lot to discuss in the lettercols this time out, too, as we take our cues from the Animal Rights-themed responses to issue #4 and a celebrity roll call of Coyote Gospel adherents.

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #5 and #6

With issues #5 and #6, Morrison's Animal Man really becomes Morrison's Animal Man. "The Coyote Gospel" and "Birds of Prey" can be read as a dialogue between masochistic (#5) and sadistic (#6) theories of aesthetics, and, together, they constitute a web of theodicy which the remainder of the narrative may or may not be striving to escape/correct/warp (via the Morrisonian stratagem of infinite narrative egress? More on that later...).

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #3 and #4

Elise and Dave conclude their look at the Animal Man "pilot" - and Elise begins to detect traces of the Morrison she got to know during our Doom Patrol escapades. We begin with a digression on Perez's Wonder Woman (spurred by Jenette Kahn's publishorial in issue #3) and make some cracks about Greek mythology that Jordan Peterson wouldn't appreciate.

  • Wild Analysis : A Grant Morrison Animal Man Podcast - #1 and #2

Dave and Elise enjoyed DOOM PATROL so much they've retrogressed a few years to the beginning of Grant Morrison's storied DC career. Elise finds a far less distinctive auteur at work in issues #1 and #2, and Dave agrees (while making prophetic statements about issues #5 to 26 and piously affirming that the series as a whole is one of the most important things that ever happened to him, so you'll all probably just have to humour him on this one). Dave also finds more excuses to mention ALF.

  • Casting From the Wreckage: A Grant Morrison Doom Patrol Podcast - Doom Patrol #62 & #63

Well, here we are at the end of the rainbow - issues #62 and 63. Bona to vada, friends! In this episode, Elise and Dave aim to set the table (or get their bearings) in anticipation of next week's more comprehensive discussion. We do wind up discussing DP's relationship to Twin Peaks: The Return even more than usual, so hopefully that's up your alley. Come in out of the rain and join us.
