Dave and Elise embark upon their penultimate patrol with issues #60 and #61 of the series! Among our action items this time out: it's the Strange Love of Martha Ivers meets Cthulhu back in little Dorothy's haunted childhood; a trip to hell; Willoughby Kipling's bone idyll; subgenius fun with Magnus and Tungsten; and a Morrisonian Dr. Seuss Ex Machina. Also: a state of the art nano-nihilist finale.
Special Request Section:
After we record our concluding chapter next week, we'd like to take a week to reflect upon the series and come back with an overview episode. For best results, we'll need some good critical material to bounce our brains off. Any Doom Patrol essays out there you'd care to recommend? Send them our way, please!

Finally, as suggested by listener Jay, here's an Amazon link to Dave's time travel novel, Hypocritic Days (published by Insomniac Press), which is set in the pulp magazine and film worlds of the early 1930s. Please do let us know if you check it out.

The rough times continue for our heroes, as Elise and Dave react to Cliff's electric dreams, the return of Willoughby Kipling and his shit attitude, another gruesome death in the DP family, an oneiric extinction event in progress, and, maybe, just maybe, some good news from Kay Challis. Also: a Seventh Victim callback that is probably just your basic monstrous nursery rhyme allusion.

It's two origins for the price of none this week on Casting From the Wreckage! First up, everything... you... thought.. you... knew... about... the... Doom Patrol... is................... wrong! Or is this is all some kind of red-headed herring??? Then, Morrison and a crew of artists break out the Swiss Army knives for superheroing à la Liefeld. Tagline: "You will believe a man can turn into a commercial ski hill!"

With 36 issues of thematic enrichment at our collective backs, Morrison chooses his moment to jam a rug under us with a series of jarringly plot-like developments! We get backstory! We get betrayal! We get Harry! We get brutal fucking murder! And a dive into a hell-well that's part Milton, part Dodgson, and part Fire Walk With Me (which came out just a couple of months after issue #56).

Get set for cavortin' calamities aplenty as Dave and Elise dip into a pair of brackish soap opera reflecting pools known colloquially as Doom Patrol #53 and #54. We hearken back to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's FF #51 ("This Man, This Monster"), Elise gets her Paglia on, re: Rebis, and we can't help wondering why both issues end in egg panels. Don't miss it, Doomatics!

It's Christmas in January with Elise, Dave, and the Doom Patrol. For a couple of panels, anyway... On the whole, these issues have a kind of funereal madness that is entirely in keeping with Presidential politics. Add a Yankee Doodle frenzy to the mix and you've got yourself one hell of a lumpenpatriotic riot. So grab yourself a good rock and take aim, friend!

It's a whole new Brotherhood of Dada in DOOM PATROL #49 and #50 (thankfully, they've still got the some old Nobody at the helm - but don't accuse him of that!). Time to meet The Love Glove! Agent "!"! The Blur! A very special bicycle! And a weird plan to run for President. Wonderful listener David Allison helps to extricate your hosts from a Jam re: the roots of Liza Radley (and also makes several other fine contributions). Plus there's some bawdy talk about the scent of pencil shavings.

Up periscopes, people! It's time to meet The Shadowy Mr. Evans n' Clankie, the Sex Men (Kiss, Cuddle, and Torture), the Scarlet Harlot, that expanding paint-stain, ionically induced hallucinations, and a brand new Rebis. There's a Doom Salon. An Action-Klaxon. And a fleeting moment of pure superteam agápē for Cliff. Lizzie called it: "Things are going to become strange."

In their last CASTING FROM THE WRECKAGE episode of 2017, Elise and Dave move from the ridiculous Adventure of the Beard Hunter to Liza Radley's sublime emergence in an impossibly real place. Like issues #29/#30, these two issues show Morrison expanding the scope of his run on the title, veering off into Dave Sim-style industry-and-superhero subculture satire in #45 (without the 1991 Sim's viewpoint, thankfully) and then reconnecting with the core Doom Patrolers in #46 at a more affecting level than ever before. We get some more of that candleguy, another clock-faced motherfucker, Dave's favourite Simon Bisley cover, and some ominous quasi-revelations about the chief.
