  • TOTLB 444 The Long Halloween 1

Come on, who isn’t game for a good Batman story! Of course, the caveat is that it has to be “good.” There have been many Batman stories, and they have all had their shares of ups and downs, but it seems as though nobody is arguing about whether The Long Halloween has its downs at all! So, we are talking about the first part of this Batman movie!!

“During the holidays, a brutal series of murders strike fear into the city of Gotham. Batman sets out to pursue the serial killer with the support of police officer James Gordon and district attorney Harvey Dent.”

The first part of this film is setting up who our characters are, and setting up some of the strife that we’re going to see throughout both films. We get to see the downfall of two face, some hilarious joker scenes, and of course a really good version of Batman!!

  • TOTLB 443 She Hulk

The show we’re talking about today has been many years in the making! With a much newer explosion of TV shows that are coming out of the Disney machine, Marvel has been putting out so much more content lately. One of those shows is of course, the brand new series, She Hulk!!

“In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany)—an attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases—must navigate the complicated life of a single, 30-something who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk.”

It has come with its own set of controversies which we don’t care about, but you’re more than welcome to google if you are. This was meant to be a silly, 4th wall breaking, show, and we think it accomplished this task pretty well. Of course, it has its flaws that anything else, but it’s definitely worth the watch. It’s all about Jennifer Walters accidentally being turned into a Hulk, and having to traverse the legal world with this reputation! We get a lot of really cool cameos, and some pretty funny villain sequences. Watch it, and make up your own mind!

  • TOTLB 442 The Return of the King

Here we are, at the end, of one of the best trilogies that has ever been created. YES, we’re biased with that comment, but financially, and ratings wise that comment definitely seems to hold much truth for the majority of people. We’re here at the conclusion of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, talking about the Return of the King!

“The culmination of nearly 10 years’ work and conclusion to Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy based on the timeless J.R.R. Tolkien classic, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” presents the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil fighting for control of the future of Middle-earth. Hobbits Frodo and Sam reach Mordor in their quest to destroy the `one ring’, while Aragorn leads the forces of good against Sauron’s evil army at the stone city of Minas Tirith.”

What happens to our rag tag group of people whom are at the ends of their ropes, but know that they still have much to accomplish? Aragorn is finally making a turn to be the person, and the king, who he was meant to be his whole life. Sam & Frodo are still trucking along on this perilous journey to destroy the ring, and have to deal with a traitor, and many other dangerous things out in the world. Yes, this movie ends about four times, but, it’s totally worth it!!

  • TOTLB 441 The Two Towers

“The quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the company is true.” Galadriel’s last words to the fellowship before it all but came apart at the seems. We’re still going along the Lord of the Ring train tracks onto part two of this amazing trilogy. We are of course talking about The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

“The sequel to the Golden Globe-nominated and AFI Award-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers” follows the continuing quest of Frodo (Elijah Wood) and the Fellowship to destroy the One Ring. Frodo and Sam (Sean Astin) discover they are being followed by the mysterious Gollum. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), the Elf archer Legolas and Gimli the Dwarf encounter the besieged Rohan kingdom, whose once great King Theoden has fallen under Saruman’s deadly spell.”

What happens now that the fellowship has all but dissolved, and all of our companions are pretty much separated? Frodo & Sam make a frenemy, who they aren’t sure they can trust, but is taking them much further than they anticipated. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are on the hunt for the Uruk’s who have taken Merry and Pippin. Plus the awesome battle at Helm’s Deep! This might be the most exciting of the three films!

  • TOTLB 440 Fellowship of the Ring

This is one of the few pop culture classics that I can remember actually going to the theater and enjoying. It’s also a book that I remember re-reading right before the movie came out. Without realizing it, The Lord of the Rings might have been the biggest influence on my nerd tendencies. I fell in love with this series, as well as the different races of beings, the writing, and everything that made this fantasy amazing! We are talking about the first movie in the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Rings!

“The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. But fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring and steps into legend. A daunting task lies ahead for Frodo when he becomes the Ringbearer – to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged.”

What do you do when you find out that one of the most powerful creatures is preparing to try and take over the world again? The only thing stopping him is a four foot Hobbit with a secret ring that needs to be destroyed. Well, you put together a team of course. Consisting of Hobbits, humans, Elves, & Dwarves! This first film is all about, and does a great job, of telling the intro story about who everyone is, why the rings are important, and why the one ring needs to be destroyed. It’s just a small piece of the whole trilogy, but it’s still a great start! If somehow you’ve gone this long and haven’t seen these movies, now is the time for you to take a step back, and go watch them!

  • TOTLB 439 The Rings of Power

I am a GIANT fan of pretty much anything that has to do with J.R.R. Tolkien!! I started reading with Lord of the Rings all the way back in elementary school! Naturally, I would move onto The Hobbit, and then try my hand at Unfinished Tales, and The Silmarillion! Today’s topic is all about the Prime Video series that is expanding this universe in a great way! We’re talking about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power!

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an American fantasy television series based on the novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices by J. R. R. Tolkien. Developed by showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming service Prime Video, the series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It is produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with HarperCollins and New Line Cinema, and in consultation with the Tolkien Estate.”

Getting to learn about Galadriel, Elendil, Elrond, Durin, Isildur, and SO MANY amazing Tolkien universe characters has been great! We’re definitely not the kind of podcast that nit picks everything we talk about to death, instead deciding to try and enjoy as much as we can! Yes, this series is not a page by page depiction of what happens in the 2nd age, but there is no possible way that it could be, with the rights that were purchased. Instead, it’s visually appealing, the acting is fine, and it’s expanding something that we as nerds love. All of those points are enough for us to sit back and enjoy what we’re seeing on our TV screens!

  • TOTLB 438 Grim

It’s comic book review time!! For today’s comic book we are paying a visit to our friends from BOOM! Studios!! The comic book series is written by Stephanie Phillips, and drawn by Flaviano! We’re talking about their comic book Grim!

“Jessica Harrow is dead. But her journey has only just begun! Discover the world of the afterlife, where Jessica has been recruited as a Reaper, tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination. But unlike the rest of the Reapers, she has no memory of what killed her and put her into this predicament. In order to unravel the mystery of her own demise, she’ll have to solve an even bigger one – where is the actual GRIM REAPER?”

The real Grim Reaper is delegating his responsibilities to other “reapers” in order to get his work done more effectively and efficiently! Well, what happens when one of those reapers accidentally makes contact with the living, after one of our dead bodies is on the run? This book is beautiful and such a good read and we both recommend that you go pick it up if you haven’t!

  • TOTLB 437 Samaritan

We’re diving into a Sylvester Stallone movie, and seeing if this superhero movie is just Stallone in a cape. The running theory is that Stallone essentially plays himself in 99% of the movies that he is featured in. Would this movie be any different? This isn’t his first foray into superhero movies, with his role in Guardians of the Galaxy taking that spot. BUT, Samaritan is his first leading role, and is a bit of a different take than most superhero movies that are out currently.

“Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Mr. Smith, is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s superpowered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe he perished in the fire, but some, like Sam, have hope that he’s still alive. With crime now on the rise, Sam makes it his mission to coax Samaritan out of hiding to save the city from ruin.”

Like all topics that we speak of, we advocate that you should at least check them out one time. Now, just because Stallone plays himself in every movie he is in, doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing. That is something that you’ll have to decide for yourself, but as stated above, this is at least a little bit different than what we’re used to seeing on our screens at this point. Plus, that ending, is not something that we saw happening. While maybe any superhero movie follows a bit of a formula, it definitely strays from that formula to bring in the conclusion!

  • TOTLB 436 Fast & Furious

We’re going all the way back to 2001 for our pop culture classic for this episode!! The origination of “family” as we know it, straight from Vin Diesel’s mouth! This movie has spawned a series that goes into ten different films! We are of course talking about the original Fast & Furious!!

“Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) enjoys the adrenaline of street car racing and his fans treat him like a rock star. After a blazing encounter with the ruthless Johnny Tran, Dom decides to take Brian (Paul Walker), a newcomer to street racing, under his wing. Dom’s sister Mia sees something she likes in Brian, too. Trouble is, neither of them realize he’s an undercover cop, and Dominic and his rival Johnny Tran are both the prime suspects in a case involving dirty money and big-rig hijacking.”

While you might know this franchise as being dominated by The Rock and with more and more over the top fighting and car tricks that make no sense in physics, in 2001 is where the series has its humble beginnings. Starring Paul Walker as an undercover cop, and Vin Diesel as a thief, this is where it all begins and starts what will be a MASSIVE cash cow, and reinvigorated franchise!

  • TOTLB 435 Locke & Key S3

We’ve come to a topic that itself has come to a conclusion. Yes, if you watched the very end of the last episode, they teased a possible open ending with a few whispers here and there, but it’s already been announced that season 3 will be the last season of our topic today, Locke & Key!

“Season 3 picks up in the aftermath of season 2, with Kinsey, Bode and Nina adapting to life without Tyler (who has moved to Montana and neglected to keep his magical memories) and preparations for Duncan’s upcoming wedding to his boyfriend Brian. Dodge is gone and everything appears to be at peace, right?”

However we feel about this season, or the series as a whole is out there, but we do think that this latest season was a better season than season 2. If follows a very similar path than the last two seasons. The family finds new kings, forges new relationships, and has to face a new villain. The one thing that we will say is that, because it was the final season, maybe they rushed the finale? But, the season as a whole is definitely worth checking out! If somehow you’ve gotten this far and at least haven’t seen the first season, you definitely need to go watch it, or go read the comic books from which this series is inspired!
