Thinking Outside The Long Box

During San Diego Comic Con 2022 we had the amazing opportunity to sit in on the press conference for the NEW AMC show, Tales of the Walking Dead!! I’ll be completely up front and honest, because of where we were sitting and the distance, it isn’t the easiest thing to listen to, but if you listen closely you’ll get to hear some awesome information about The Walking Dead’s newest show!!! There is already one episode out, as of the release of this podcast, so make sure you go check out this limited anthology series!!

“A mother evolves after she and her daughter escape violence and take refuge on a vintage steamboat; the peaceful ambience deteriorates when a coup attempt forces the mother to revisit her violent past in order to protect her child.”

It’s time to jump into the world of Thor once more!! We’ve been following Thor and his fellow Asgardians for many years now, and we’re talking about the fourth installment of the series! Did you think that Thor: Love & Thunder was going to live up to the hype from the third film? Or from Endgame?

“Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to his surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer. Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance.”

This is a wholly different movie from the last film, and I think that might be something that has turned some Thor fans off. BUT, it has definitely not been the same feeling for us. It might not be “as good” but it’s definitely still good, stands on its own, and feels like a very different genre of movie, which is ok to us!

It’s been twenty five years since our pop culture classic was made!! We’re going all the way back to 1997 in order to revisit a cult classic! I’m not sure that this was ever a huge deal when it was originally released, but since that time it has developed a good amount of following, not because of how “good” the movie is, but because it just seems to be a fun watch!

“In the distant future, the Earth is at war with a race of giant alien insects. Little is known about the Bugs except that they are intent on the eradication of all human life. But there was a time before the war… A Mobile Infantry travels to distant alien planets to take the war to the Bugs. They are a ruthless enemy with only one mission: Survival of their species no matter what the cost…”

This movie has a very simple plot. It’s a futuristic society in which humans are trying to find the home planet of a species of alien bugs, in order to destroy them all. There are some ups and some downs, and Rico goes through a lot of stuff in order to gain the trust of his fellow soldiers, even going through a ton of heart ache. Through it all though, there is plenty of bug guts! If anything else, this is just a fun watch.

It’s time to talk about a movie that that towards the back half turned out to be something way different than we thought it might be. I know that this is probably a confusing first sentence, but when you go into this movie, you need to know that you’re in for a bit of a different experience than what you’re imagining! We’re talking about the movie, Moonfall!

“The world stands on the brink of annihilation when a mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit and sends it hurtling toward a collision course with Earth. With only weeks before impact, NASA executive Jocinda “Jo” Fowler teams up with a man from her past and a conspiracy theorist for an impossible mission into space to save humanity.”

A giant event happens with NASA astronauts out in space, which looks suspicious, but ends with one of the astronauts moving forward with her career, and one of the astronauts getting booted out in shame! Years later the moon starts to fall out of orbit, and those same people need to figure out why. BUT, they’re also accompanied by a conspiracy theorist, with quite the imagination! You should definitely at least give it a shot!

Today’s topic was unexpectedly much more serious than intended. That doesn’t mean that it’s bad, it just means that the topic at hand leaned more into deep topics than the comedy that it’s been more known for. After getting cancelled from cable TV, The Orville was picked up to run a third season out of Hulu. So, yes, we’re talking about the newly minted 3rd season of The Orville: New Horizons!

“Set 400 years in the future, The Orville: New Horizons finds the crew of the USS Orville continuing their mission of exploration, as they navigate both the mysteries of the universe and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships.”

There are still many laughs, but this new season was VERY powerful. If you want to know the intricacies of each character then you’ll need to watch the first and second seasons, but the themes themselves, of each episode, are enough for you to be able to watch these episodes as stand alone episodes. Some of the topics that inform this season include suicide/death, being transgender, hatred for different species, mating with different species and having children, and extreme love. While this season seems a little deeper than normal, it is still such a good watch, and it’s definitely recommended for anybody out there.

It’s comic book time everyone!! We’ve been trying to go back and forth on how much we want to cover comic books, because we do want to cover comic books, and now we’re talking about a book that started a popular series!! More precisely, we’re talking about the first seven issues of the series. We are of course talking about the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson book, The Boys!

“The Boys is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good.”

By the end of 2019 Dynamite had sole almost $4.5 million worth of omnibuses, which is about 150000 omnibuses! To say that this comic book was popular would probably be a bit of an understatement. The wild thing is that raw, you can find these books for a pretty decent price in the wild. PLUS this is a comic book that started the popular series of the same name, The Boys! Three seasons deep, many deaths, and many more crazy scenes, it’s still running wild! The Book is probably the first thing that you should pick up, before you pick up the show, if you have never been exposed to The Boys!

It’s pop culture classic time everyone, and this time we’re going back almost twenty years to 2003! There have been many vampire movies, and there have been many werewolf movies, and this was one of the few movies that did a pretty good job of bringing both of those monsters into one movie!! We’re talking of course about the film, Underworld!

“Under cover of night, vampires engage in an age-old battle with their sworn enemies, the Lycans, a clan of violent werewolves. Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire orphaned in the wake of a bloody Lycan attack, works for the vampire clan as a trained killer. When the Lycans take a mysterious interest in Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), an exceptional mortal doctor, Selene struggles to save him from Lucian (Michael Sheen), a ruthless Lycan leader hellbent on ending the vampire bloodline.”

Someone is trying to create a perfect vampire/werewolf mix to be unstoppable! When this came out, it seemed to be pretty popular with people, and for the most part it holds up pretty well, even on the graphics end of things. Now, I’m not advocating for you to go and watch the wholes series, but this first one, this one is at least worth a watch!
