Thinking Outside The Long Box

Here we are again, during one of our very fun, and sometimes super interactive, LIVE episodes!! We were still quarantining from each other at this point, so we were doing the live episode, virtually. Because of that, some trollers were let into the room, and more and more fun ensued!

Aside from the trollers being trollers though, we had a lot of fun, talking about some of the things that we had watched, in the last two weeks!! We hope that you all will join us in the future, for a LIVE episode as well. You can either troll us, or you can be one of the guys giving us fun topics to discuss!

Are you curious where some of your favorite swear words come from? Why some swear words have now become common place, and other swear words have risen, to take their place? Did you know that some swear words that you use, come from unique, and funny origins? Well, if you didn’t know, but have always wanted to know, THIS is the series that you need to be watching!

Nicolas Cage serves as the host, for the Netflix series, History of Swear Words. He takes us through six episodes of swear words, where they come from, and how they’re used today. They are; Fuck, Shit, Bitch, Dick, Pussy, & Damn! Featuring other comedians like Nick Offerman, AND language experts, this is a Netflix series that teaches, but also does a great job of not taking itself too seriously! Plus, you’ll learn a few things!!

Not too long ago, we had a ton of fun, speaking about a small Alien movie, titled Alien Raiders! Chosen by Doyle, as a pop culture classic, we weren’t sure quite how this movie was going to be received, by the team. BUT, boy did it blow our minds, how fun this movie was!

Well, the creative mind behind Alien Raiders, is Ben Rock. For this episode, we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Ben about Alien Raiders. There is also a little bit of Blair Witch sprinkled in as well. But mostly, it’s Ben telling us about the business, and how this amazing movie was made. Ben is such a fun interview, and we hope he keeps creating, because so far he hasn’t disappointed!

Our next pop culture classic episode, comes to from the year 2000, a full 21 years ago. This movie is one of the progenitors for movies like The Hunger Games. This movie is a foreign film, that, for 11 years, was never officially released in the United States or Canada. There was a lot of concern for it to be distributed in North America, due to it’s violence, and school themes.

We are of course speaking about the movie, Battle Royale! In a not too distant future, Japan has passed an official act, in order to try and curb “juvenile delinquency.” This see’s groups of kids in school, who are forced to participate, in a fight to the death. Only one person is supposed to survive, and be considered the winner, by this totalitarian government.  From this of course, we get a TON of over the top violence, mixed in with some subtle messaging. This movie was based on a novel, and did ultimately spawn one sequel.

For this movie/topic, we are going back into the past, put a little bit further into the future than the original! We’re going back into the future, to 1984, for the next installment of Wonder Woman, aptly titled, Wonder Woman 1984.

At this point in time, Diana is still mourning the death of the love of her life, Steve, while having to move on/into the future without him. There are two main villains featured in this movie, you decide whether that is a good or a bad thing. We’re introduced to Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig, and Maxwell Lord, played by Pedro Pascal. There’s a lot of wishing going on during the movie, which brings by someone’s love, plus a lot of wishes that are also rescinded. PLUS, we get two new powers, and a new suit from Diana. It’s quite the adventure in those two hours.

And here we are, capping off our awesome “season of Supernatural,” with a great interview to end the mega marathon!! Hard to find a better interview to end our Supernatural run, than The Darkness herself, Amara!

Of course, Amara is played by the wonderful, Emily Swallow!! We were able to speak to Emily about some of her thoughts behind, what her frame of mind is, for playing something that is more than human, in the deity that her character is. Of course, though, we couldn’t talk to Emily without at least mentioning some of her work, as The Armorer, in the first season of The Mandalorian! The Armorer, is essentially, the narrator of the first season, and the reason that Din Djarin goes on his quest, in the second season. While speaking to her about The Mandalorian, she speaks about what is different in her acting, from these projects, to projects like Castlevania. Emily is killing it on the screen right now!

It doesn’t matter whether Supernatural, now, has come and go, we are still celebrating this amazing series! We are bringing you another awesome interview!! Kevin Tran became a very prominent & important character in the Supernatural world, especially towards the very end of the series. And, of course, Kevin Tran is played by the wonderful actor, Osric Chau.

You’ll remember Osric, obviously from Supernatural, but also from Mister French Taste, Crisis on Infinite Earths (Flash, Arrow, & The Legends of Tomorrow), and of course Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Of course, we speak about some of those other projects that Osric has been involved in, but we definitely get some information on what his time was like, on the set of Supernatural, and whether he wanted to take the job at the beginning, or not?

When we first spoke about the second season of The Mandalorian, there were only a few episodes that had been released! Here we are, making sure that we speak about that crazy and fun ending, that came through the rest of the second season!

You get even more from Grogu and Din Djarin, but also from Carlos Esposito with the Darksaber, and the rest of the “non way” Mandalorians, including Bo Katan! Now that one of the main players is gone with a certain Jedi, where do the rest of the seasons go from here? Who knows, but maybe we’ll get more Bill Burr out of the situation? Also, I’m sure that Grogu will come back at some point, the take a break from his Jedi adventures!

This episode is brought to you by two comedy legends! I know that word is thrown around a little bit too much these days, but honestly, Steve Martin, and John Candy are GIANTS in the industry of comedy. There will always be debates of course, but there is no debating that if there was a comedy hall of fame (maybe there is), these two deserve to be in it! That leads us to the topic of the day, which of course, is Planes, Trains & Automobiles!

Planes, Trains & Automobiles tells the story of Neal (Steve Martin) and Del (John Candy). Neal is trying to get home for Thanksgiving, in order to see his daughter’s performance, and has fallen victim to a MOUNTAIN of bad luck. He can’t get a taxi, planes are being grounded, trains are breaking down, and it’s all pretty hilarious! Neal and Del run into each other at the beginning, and their adventure throughout the movie, is one of the funniest pairings in a comedy, that’s not just over the top drivel. And once you hear the payoff of Del’s character, you’ll be in tears. This is definitely a movie that is worth the watch, if you haven’t watched yet!

Our next subject, for today, is a tricky one. After watching, we still aren’t quite sure what is actually going on. Did people get transported to a secret location that looks exactly like where their homes were? Did they get transported to a different universe somewhere? We’re hoping that some of these questions will get answered in the next season, but we of course, are speaking about the Netflix series, Alice in Borderland!

Alice in Borderland is based off of the Japanese manga of the same name. It is based in Tokyo, with three friends, who essentially “wish” that their current lives would be different, and find themselves in a position of, be careful what you with for. Arisu, and his friends find themselves fighting for their lives, in what seems to be a game, where players have to survive different situations, and collect playing cards. There is MUCH death in this show, but as much as it is gory, it is also very compelling! It is definitely worth the watch!
