We sit down this week with Deven Kennedy, who decided to start looking after himself physically and mentally after almost being killed on duty while working as a police officer in Nova Scotia. A traumatic incident that left him both physically and psychologically injured, resulting in a spiral causing him to not know what the future held.
After trying to heal from the incident, he quickly discovered that he had been injured for far longer than even he had realized, and it hadn't been caused by a speeding truck. Deven began a journey back, stripping away things that had held him back, but unconsciously he had been using to cope with mounting stress, and demands both external and internal.
6 years prior to this incident, Deven was forcefully brought back into fitness by a friend finding purpose and a community in his local gym. While recovering from his traumatic incident, Resilience Through Fitness Inc. (RTF) was born, and continues to thrive to this day, growing in scope and reach. Deven’s mission of helping others continued as a First Responder but changed in his new role and he was able to connect with a growing group of people looking to be better, and be more than they had before. Deven became certified as a Nutrition Coach, who specialized in athletic nutrition as well as being certified as a Sleep, Stress, and Recovery Coach who also was able to incorporate mental health and healthy nutritional choices for shift workers. Deven also developed programs for aspiring future First Responders, so they not only would be prepared for selection and hiring but for success afterward.
Come along on our journey with Deven, as we learn why we hold onto who we use to be, and why holding on holds us back.
