  • My Passionate Love Affair With Music! - Sarthak Patnaik

Paul is joined by Sarthak Patnaik, CEO of Creative Xchange to talk about music and how it has shaped his life, how he got into the music industry and why he wants to help artists.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I’m a computer science engineer. I learned computer science by using it as a tool to solve a problem. Music happens to be one industry where this can happen. There was a big problem in the music industry is that there’s not a fair chance to make a living as an artist, despite being trained in the profession, unlike a plumber. I use my tools to solve this.
    • Sound and smell are two powerful reminders of times we’ve gone through, I clearly associate times of my life with songs, for example, Lady Antebellum when I was in New York and those things are associated with Lady Antebellum. All the emotions of working during the great recession, the sadness and joy are associated with that.
    • What we see in the world right now, with digital tools, there’s nothing like that for musicians and that’s what we’re trying to solve, how you fundamentally address the problem of making a living as a musician and sell what you create
    • If you stay away from the problem, you stay shielded from the problem and you’re shielded from what the problem is. There shouldn’t be a ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ of talent, everyone should be able to exist in the middle ground, it’s a lovely place to be for people to share and evolve creatively.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I started listening to country music for the sheer pleasure of the lyrics, this brought me to ballads, then rock and metal and now I listen to everything. Music is still evolving.’

‘Bob Dylan is a favourite of mine, Blood On The Tracks is a heartbreak album and my favourite.’

    ‘Anyone can sing.’

‘We relentlessly try to create opportunities for musicians.’

  • New Purposeful Living: A Wonderful Way To Be! - Paul D. Lowe & Lyn Smith

Paul is joined by Lyn Smith who is back on the podcast for the third time to talk about life’s purpose, why are we here and what burns inside us that we need to achieve? Lyn turns host and fires questions back at Paul on this subject as well as answering his questions of her.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds, your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents come alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.
    • It’s fulfilling to work towards something bigger than ourselves, whether that’s with your immediate family or your local community, your local region, your nation or something on a more global/international scale. It’s about thinking about the legacy that comes off the back of touching another person or another thing’s life.
    • I’ve come to understand that, after not being able to end my life at the age of thirteen and a half, I came out with the awareness that I’m here to fight for the underdog. I didn’t understand what it meant at that age, but I wanted to fight for those who couldn’t fight for themselves… which got me in a lot of trouble over the years.
    • My purpose has evolved from that, the fire burns stronger than ever but as I’ve grown older I’ve gained the experience and wisdom to control my energy to where I can make the most impact.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘For those who think they don’t have a passion or a purpose, there are different ways to uncover that. You may just have to try a number of things before you find it.’

‘Simply smiling at a stranger could inspire them not to take their life that day. But you may not ever know that you’ve done that. Little gestures, or random acts of kindness, can become daily habits.’

‘My purpose has evolved and burns stronger than ever’

‘We all have six human needs that must be met in a self-empowering way, not a dis-empowering way and it’s the same for our purpose: To influence life for the better.’

  • How Are You Meeting Your Human Needs? – Paul D. Lowe & Lyn Smith

Paul is joined by returning guest, Lyn Smith, who takes over as host, to talk with Paul about the six human needs, as outlined by Anthony Robbins, and how we’re meeting them. Paul talks about his struggles with alcohol addiction and how the six human needs were met by the addiction and how understanding how they work now has helped him remain sober for the last 12 years.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I’ve asked people the ‘Indecent Proposal’ question – would you sleep with someone for £1million? Most people say no based on their values. But when you ask what if someone you love needed a life-changing operation, what would you do then? It puts the question in a different context and the values are compromised to meet the need. It’s an extreme hypothetical example, but I do uphold Robbins’ statement that we will compromise our values to meet our needs.
    • I was told at a very early age that I had an alcohol addiction and an addictive personality. I believed that to be true, so I set up a self-fulfilling prophecy and drank to outdrink everyone, sabotaging relationships and jobs along the way. I lost everything, consistently. It met my need for certainty, I’d know I was going on a mad bender and I planned for it. It met my uncertainty needed by me not knowing where the night would take me, when it was good it was great and when it was bad… well. The need for significance was met because I stood out from the crowd by doing whatever I was doing. And love and affection was met because women (either romantically or familial) would support and stand by me, no matter what I did and my drinking buddies just accepted me. When I was drinking I knew I’d be coming off it and I’d enter into the light again, meeting my need for growth and contribution because I would give back to those less fortunate.
    • When I look back on my life, I embrace it all with warmth, love and gratitude, the tears, the tantrums, the heartache I cause myself and others, because I’ve learned so much from it.
    • It’s taken me a few years, but I now feel like I’ve got the balance in life and the six human needs have been absolutely phenomenal in my understanding of how they change people’s lives, once we understand the rules of the game. The more I grow, the more I’m aware and the more I can contribute not just to myself, to become a better version of myself, but the more I can give to leave the world a better place than when I got here.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We’ll go against our values and our morals to get our human needs met.’

‘The four core needs are the need for certainty (control), uncertainty (variety), significance (me, myself and I), love and connection. The two higher needs are the need for growth and the ultimate is the need for contribution’

‘Life is not an exact science, Mother Nature is way beyond us. We don’t need the algorithm of life, we just need to live life being the best we can be.’

‘I always felt I needed to be behind in life to come back twice as hard, only to throw it all away again, like a dog chasing his tail.’

  • Choose What You Want To Believe - Paul D. Lowe & Lyn Smith

Paul is joined by Lyn Smith, who takes over as host to talk with Paul about beliefs; are they all false? Have we simply decided they’re true? Which ones serve you and which don’t?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As a child I had a pair of red shoes that I loved. One day my mother said that they wouldn’t fit me anymore and I defied her, saying “these shoes will always fit me”. I believed that to be true because I was so emotionally attached to them.
    • So long as we have awareness that they are just beliefs. The question is; do these beliefs serve us? If it does, run with it. If not, question it.
    • I had the belief that I’m a hard hitting, hard drinking Irishman. That certainly didn’t serve me, because it fuelled my addiction, but it kept me alive. We have to be very careful of labels because we create a belief around it. What does serve me is knowing life’s purpose, this can be simple – it doesn’t have to be setting up a school in Africa or cleaning up the oceans – it’s the little things that matter.
    • It’s not about creating a stronger belief, it’s about creating a more self-empowering belief. Ultimately, we’re taking the power back over our lives, it’s about self-awareness and self-empowerment. Values are in there too, what do we value? My five values are the five Ls: Life, learning, loving, legacy and loyalty.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Beliefs control our thoughts, our thoughts control our words, our words control our habits. Eventually our beliefs end up controlling the outcomes in life that we create for ourselves.’

    ‘I’m not the world’s greatest cook… there’s a self-limiting belief!’

‘Know that you are enough. It’s OK to not be perfect. You’re special. You’re unique, in every sense of the word.’

‘Beliefs are transient. What serves us today won’t serve us tomorrow, and things change with experience and age.’

  • The Challenges Within Uganda Part 2 – Paul D. Lowe & Dr Naboth Namara

Paul is joined again by Dr Naboth Namara to talk more about the challenges in Uganda which is less economically developed, doesn’t have a fully-developed democracy, without a strong middle-class, and has experienced a civil war in recent years.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Fewer girls access education than boys, especially higher education, and many girls drop out of school because of traditions that continue to hinder their progress in school. It is believed that girls will make good wives even without an education, despite the fact that we know the value of education to women’s lives. Most textbooks used in Ugandan school promote male hegemony by including gender insensitive language.
    • Littering is a big problem here too. Rivers are clogged with plastic bottles. People just throw their rubbish on the ground, I pick up litter from the street outside my building all the time. People here need to be educated on the dangers of littering to the environment. I refuse to use plastic bags and bottles and talk to my neighbours about it all the time.
    • The best way to communicate a message is as a role model and to surround yourself with similarly-minded people. If you create a group of ambassadors in a community who think like you they will role model certain behaviours and characteristics that will send a message to the communities. I’ve seen this work in Rwanda where men talk against violence and violence towards women and it creates impact.
    • It’s very difficult to change a mindset, you need to work hard at it and have passion for the message you wish to pass on. You have to develop a strategy as to which issues to deal with first and what message you need to use to reach people as well as the channels you wish to use to reach different audiences – radio, TV, local drama groups even.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Most girls miss school for days each month when they are menstruating because they do not have access to sanitary towels.’

‘Our schools churn out students and graduates who have limited skills for survival, in terms of work, social skills and teamwork skills. Even simple things like asking if you want something, or saying “thank you”. Few are employed.’

‘We must change people’s mindsets. I know it’s an uphill struggle, but it is the way forward. Societies can still change.’

‘Role-modelling is very important, in my opinion, people learn from you and remember what you say’

  • The Challenges Within Uganda Part 1 – Paul D. Lowe & Dr Naboth Namara

Paul is joined by Dr Naboth Namara to talk about the challenges in Uganda which is less economically developed, doesn’t have a fully-developed democracy, without a strong middle-class, and has experienced a civil war in recent years.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • One of the biggest challenges in Uganda is violence in many guises, with cases increasing day by day. Between 2019 and 2020 gender-based violence cases jumped from 2,386 to 8,203, more than triple. Most of the victims were women and girls although some men and boys also suffered. Almost 19,000 people were victims of some form of domestic violence, 3,000 of which were male, 13,000 were female and 1,200 were male juveniles and the same number for female juveniles. These are only the cases reported to the police.
    • There has been a staggering 650,000 unwanted teen pregnancies between 2020 and 2021, which were in large part result from the closure of schools during Covid.
    • The major factor in the rise of violence has been the lockdown because many men and women who would usually go to urban centres to work were then often stuck in a single room with their large families. Six people renting a single room, conflicts are bound to arise. However, another factor is land. Most of these violent acts are the result of fights for land and space as towns continue to grow and urbanise.
    • The education system is elitist. It costs a lot of money to send your children to a good school, so a lot end up in state-run schools that have no facilities, not even classrooms in some cases. That means we have a big problem where people are struggling to meet the needs of their families, and to send them to a good school, and they’re paying less attention to their children in the process.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Gender-based violence takes on many forms: female genital mutilation – although a law has been enacted in Uganda to stop FGM. Though, in general, there seems to be a lack of political will to implement laws here.’

‘56% of women between 15 and 49 have experienced physical violence, the number for men over 15 is 50%. This is too much.’

Traditionally men are the breadwinners, so during Covid, their ability to earn money was taken away and they felt less like men. They’re under immense psychological strain.’

‘People feel bad  that they are not earning good wages and it’s compounded by political leaders stealing money.’

  • Escaping The Nine To Five – Paul D. Lowe & Nick Nalbach

Paul is joined by Nick Nalbach to talk about escaping the nine to five existence a lot of us live in and how to make ‘passive income’ which will enable you to live life on your terms and take back control.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Entrepreneurs are driven to solve problems head on whereas business owners sit at the top of their business, watching their employees work, collecting the paycheck – not that I’m bashing that, and a lot of entrepreneurs start off that way. Entrepreneur is a mindset, whereas business owner is a title.
    • You do get asked questions like “you’re putting a lot of time into the podcast, but how much is it making you?” It’s not making me any money right now, I’m doing it for the fun and the experience. I enjoy it and it’s connecting me to some amazing people. It’s one rung of the ladder to get me to the next step.
    • At first, I saw success as material things – cars, houses, etc – but the more I talked to more entrepreneurs that are crushing it and now I think of success as freedom and having control of your life. I want to enlighten people who feel stuck in their nine to five existences through my book, as a kind of mentor. If you’re going to try building something, having a mentorship from someone who’s been there and done it is so valuable. They can bring new ideas to the table that you may never have thought of or point out the mistakes that you’re making without realising it.
    • Be you, continue being you and continue being human, stay authentic. It might sound cheesy, but it will attract more people than you can imagine, even if you think you’re the most off the wall one off, you’ll be surprised how many people have the same interests as you and are just like you.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I define myself as an entrepreneur and a podcaster.’

‘I have in my mind a vision of where I see me and my brand going and how I want to get there and how everything will be tied together.’

‘Something a nine to five doesn’t allow is for you to go out and experience things. Why would I stick around if that's the case?’

‘You only have a finite amount of time when it’s all said and done, how you spend it is important. Spend it with the people you love, doing the things you love.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Nicholas Nalbach didn’t really know what line of work he wanted to get into, he graduated with a degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Stout. Like most people, he knew a college degree is something he should pursue, without a real agenda or end goal in mind.

He is now a Project Manager for a construction company who travels to a new project each year, so is never in the same place for more than a few months at a time. He says: “It is very exciting getting to experience places I never would’ve thought to visit, but I am putting in many long hours each week. And don’t get me wrong, I like what I do, I am just looking for a way to make my cash flow more passive.”

The book ‘The Millionaire Fastlane: Crack the Code to Wealth and Live Rich for a Lifetime!’ by MJ DeMarco, completely changed the way he thought about his career and making money.

He then started thinking about what passive income is. “I’ve always thought of it as unfathomable, and only the lucky few could manage to get there, but it’s not!” Through research he heard countless testimonials of people who were making passive income a reality for themselves.

For Nick, it’s not about being the next Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos. It’s more about having the freedom to live life and spend valuable time with the people you love and care about.

“I want to help you achieve the very thing that I am working towards. That’s what Nine-Five to Freedom is all about. I am not an expert by any means, and I may not always have the answers at first. However, I am willing to put in the work it takes to get myself, and you, there. Are you!?”

  • Youth And Experience: A Winning Combination – Paul D. Lowe & Ajinkya Mahadik

Paul is joined by Ajinkya Mahadik, who wrote a chapter in the book Speaking From Our Hearts: Volume 7, called 'Fear and Excitement', which is what Paul has invited Ajinky onto the podcast to discuss.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As somebody who loves sports, there are times where you have to manage change or you can be on a high or a low, very difficult and drastic changes, and it’s very important to be able to manage and be able to work through them properly because too much of one thing is never good. It’s what my chapter was a bout.
    • Fear is handled differently by different people, some take it on as a challenge and look forward to it, whereas other might feel it’s not for them and let it go.
    • As human it’s a responsibility to take care of our home. If you live in an apartment you want to keep it clean since it’s your home, your space. The Earth is home to all of us and I don’t see a reason why we should be destroying it.
    • Having youth and experience working together is the best combination possible for making the world a better place. We shouldn’t see each other as rivals, just as other humans. This is a small step everybody can make without a lot of effort, but could help go a long way in the world.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Even though someone might be older and had more experiences than me, we haven’t had the same experiences. Everybody goes through different things that shapes the way they are.’

‘Through my experiences I’ve learned and that’s the way I’ve been able to make changes.’

‘I think people can choose to be happy or sad.’

‘If I ruled the world I’d hope I could strike a balance between helping humans to grow while maintaining nature at is current beauty, or improving it.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Ajinkya is a junior college student from Mumbai, India.  Having spent his early childhood in London, Ajinkya developed a very keen interest in motorsports and football from a very young age.  He started with electric karts at 3 years and at 4 years he was training at Rye House Speedway in the UK.  After relocating to India with his family he continued to follow his passion despite the limited facilities available in India for motorsport. He became ‘the youngest Indian ever to participate in competitive motorsport’ when he participated in the JK Tyre Rotax Cup in 2011 at the age of 7. He ranked 8th overall in the championship.

In a sudden twist of fate Ajinkya had a sudden spurt of growth which made him very tall for his age.  This made it difficult for him to fit into karts in his age group, making it difficult to continue.

Instead of giving up, Ajinkya redirected all his efforts, skills and focus into his other passion, football.  He quickly became the captain of the school football team and excelled in the school level league.  He plays in the central defender position.

Ajinkya was noticed by big clubs in India, and has played in the Under-15/ under 18 category for Football School of India and Mumbai City Football Club (MCFC).  He is also an accomplished state-level handball player.

  • The One Thing: There's More Than One Thing (Words & Tools) – Paul D. Lowe & Lisa Jayne

Paul is joined for the final part of a five-part series by Lisa Jayne, an Australian educator, mentor, speaker and writer to talk about the final part of her book, ‘The Emotionally Powerful Mother’. They discuss some of the techniques that can be used to love yourself rather than looking for love from others.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When we become more emotionally aware and we’re more in tune with our emotions we can see that perhaps the one thing that lies at the source of our problems is the fact that we’ve separated from our truest, most empowered state. We’ve walked away from us in order to find love, feel secure, please others, out of obligation to feel OK about ourselves.
    • I’ve had the greatest success in feeling peace and joy in my life when I’m paying attention to how I feel, and when I see that it’s that part of me that’s looking for somebody to make me feel loved and secure I recognise it’s my inner child wanting to meet it’s own needs and I’m connected to her now where I invite that part of me to come and see me now and I will feel love for her and embrace her in my imagination. I’m often doing that while I’m interacting in my life.
    • If someone did something to hurt me or was really unjust, I learned that I really needed to diffuse the emotional charge before talking about it. I’d walk away and take some time, ring up a friend and talk to them about how I feel, go for a walk/run, write, validate you feelings, etc. Then I’m ready to have a look at why I’m feeling what I’m feeling and try to talk to someone about it.
    • Certain words need to be changed so there’s an awareness of intention behind them: “Worry” goes nowhere and is an endless cycle. “Concern” is a better word to use because it implies there’s something you need to look at, but there is a solution. I used the term “activated” rather than “triggered”, that’s like a gun that causes death, I’d much rather activate a part of myself so I can see where I’m talking back my power.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I realised at one point that it wasn’t me walking into the relationship with my first partner, it was the little girl in me that wanted to feel loved and secure.’

‘I give myself what I’m looking for from other people, if I can do that first I’m less likely to try to create it externally which often doesn’t end up well.’

‘When you actively love the essence of who you are it amplifies and you can feel your whole body respond. It’s a really wonderful feeling.’

‘It’s very easy to be self-critical and hard on ourselves. We are learning how to be in a relationship with ourselves and others in a really healthy and empowering way.’

  • The One Thing: New Culture of Relationships – Paul D. Lowe & Lisa Jayne

Paul is joined for the fourth time out of five by returning guest Lisa Jayne, an Australian educator, mentor, speaker and writer to talk about the part of her book, ‘The Emotionally Powerful Mother’, on a new culture of relationships.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Culture is a good word to describe the framework/paradigm that we’re in with relationships. We’re not aware. It’s like we’re in a house and we do all our work in it and to it. What I learned to do is open the door, walk out of the house and my experience of relationships is completely different. The culture of relationships then started to change; The foundations were different, the words I used were different, the outcomes were different, the experience was different.
    • I’d encourage people who feel fear to make friends with it, unlike how culture tells you to hide from it. This is what emotion education is all about. It’s OK to feel afraid, but ask yourself “what is the opportunity here?” rather than reacting from fear and trying to control external circumstances, how can you use fear to grow? That’s a powerful way of dealing with fear.
    • Human being will often feel little niggles and we don’t do anything about them, but eventually they all add up and we could have a health crisis on our hands, whereas if we just looked after ourselves in the beginning and made some slight adjustments, we wouldn’t be where we are right now. It’s the same with emotions, feelings and relationships.
    • What I’ve realised from working with people as well as from my own relationships is that I created dynamics of relationships that were like persecutor/victim/rescuer so that I could come back to feeling OK about myself and deal with whatever feelings I was having that were making me feel bad. This is an unhealthy use of power, but we do it because we want to make the other person see that they really need us. If we learn to come back into our own source of power, that makes me feel self-assured, in order to be there we have to have dealt with the feelings we have that separate us from that place.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s more fruitful to put your energy into creating what  you do want rather than fighting against a culture that you don’t want.’

‘In the acceptance of a feeling we allow it to process.’

‘The current culture that’s evident on TV, in movies and music is that; in order for me to feel loved you have to love me. That culture sucks, it creates insecurities and doesn’t create unity and harmony.’

‘Watch out for the feelings of persecutor/victim/rescuer, if you’re always wondering “why does this always happen to me?”, you feel like you’re walking on eggshells or you’re really angry at someone, these are red flags. Use them to see where you’re at, what’s really going on in my feeling world right now and how can I meet that need myself rather than  acting out and creating this dynamic.’
