  • Lasting Happiness

    DESCRIPTION

Do you want to know the secret of living a lasting, happy life?

In this episode, the host Paul Lowe and his guest Marc Hoy talk about happiness, living a lasting happy life, the components of a really happy and fulfilling life and how to reverse the effects of ageing.

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Marc Hoy is the author of his new book LASTING HAPPINESS.  Marc is a happiness expert, but came by it at great cost and through unthinkable hardship.

When Marc says: “What is happiness?  Where does it come from, and how do you get it?” you should know it’s a question he’s had the time to consider…a LOT of time to consider.

In 1995 Marc returned from an overnight business trip to his home in Thailand to find a panicked house guest and a dead person on the floor.  His choices: go immediately to the police and turn his friend in for the murder he’d committed or help his friend cover up the murder and pray it was never discovered.

Marc made the wrong decision and spent 5 years in Thailand’s most notorious prison with death and decay surrounding him; his own well-being in constant peril, and happiness an elusive emotion of the past – one he’d surely never experience again.  But he did.

From the depths of despair, bit-by-bit, he created his own happiness – lasting happiness – and it saw him through the most difficult, painful period of his entire life.  And now he's ready to share the things he learned.  LASTING HAPPINESS is a field guide for the rest of us as we go through life trying to find our own happiness.

  • My Life, My Purpose - Elaine Godley

Do you want to know about Perfect Health? This is your chance to find out more and all that it entails because in this episode, Paul Lowe interviews nutritionist, psychologist and business consultant, Elaine Godley.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Perfect Health: Is a transitory thing, whatever the perfect picture is for you at any given time. It’s how our behaviour affects our health. Perfect Health is different for everybody. Once you know the perfect picture for you, it's going to be a different picture to everybody else.
  • Perfect Health doesn't focus on any one particular aspect - such as just physical health or mental health - it's the whole picture, Elaine's 'Perfect 10 Wellness Programme' includes 10 holistic modules.
  • The 10 Modules: There’s mind, body, work, home, behaviour, attitudes, beliefs, values, friends and family. These 10 aspects are the contributors to Perfect Health and if they may have a health challenge - particularly cancer. We may be very good in feeding their body the right things, the right nutrition, but the mind may not be so aligned; possibly influenced by a lot of pressure and negativity from friends and family that needs to be sorted out, We could be living in a home that's completely cluttered; the energy is not going to be flowing and obviously, if work is in a pressured or stressed environment and so on.

All these aspects and the values, attitudes and beliefs of individuals will determine how successful in how resilient they're going to be in life, not just with their health.

Purpose: Elaine’s purpose is to help people through experiences like homelessness and being a single mum etc.
    • Mind, body, family, friends, work, home, beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviour are the 10 aspects we all need to have balanced in our lives because if one or other out of tilt, then it affects everything else - resulting in stress, inflammation, illness, disease etc.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “Perfect health is different for everybody, your health, my health, you know, what's the perfect picture for you is going to be a different picture for me.”
    • “You should always enjoy what you do, for you to have Perfect Health.”
    • “If you don't have your health, you've got nothing; not even the highest salary or the biggest car - you can only sit on one toilet, you can only sleep in one bed.”
    • “Health is priceless, you can't put a price on it.”
    • “Where the mind goes, the body follows.”

  • Life's Purpose: The Six Human Needs.

ONE KEY WAY TO GAIN NEW INSIGHTS IS BY EMBRACING OUR HEARTS

Paul Lowe and Bill Burridge have had very contrasting lives and in this episode, they discuss their diverse journeys and how they have become purpose-driven, and committed to a life of serving others.

This fascinating podcast demonstrates how the Six Human Needs have been met in very different ways.  Both Paul and Bill have now achieved balance and found their individual purpose, listen-in now to hear more about their very different life experiences.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We are all governed by six needs, irrespective of where we come from, who we are and who we think we are. There are four basic, core needs and two higher-level spiritual needs
    • The four basic ones are required to be in place, before you can achieve the two higher ones.
    Behaviours

These are the actions that you take to get your needs met

The behaviours are categorised into classes, dependent on whether the behaviour is pleasurable or not pleasurable (painful)

Class 1 behaviour is pleasurable and constructive; something you enjoy doing and is good for you, others or the world

Class 2 doesn’t feel so great at the time but is good for you, others and the world

Class 3 are destructive behaviours that are not good for us, others or the world at large, but can be pleasurable

Class 4 are behaviours that are not good for us, others or the world at large and are not pleasurable; they are painful behaviours.

    Balancing Human Needs

Certainty (being sure and certain) and Variety (difference, excitement)

Significance (feeling special) and Love & Connection (with other people)

The higher-level needs are personal Growth and Contribution...

    Certainty

Bill - I had uncertainty at the beginning with lots of change and because of this, sought certainty as an adult

Paul – My world from an early age was dominated by violence, cruelty and abuse; this was my certainty and  alcohol became my crutch

    Variety

Bill – I’ve experienced a life that has had a great deal of variety. I've worked for one company for an extended time which met my need for certainty; but have worked in different positions which have provided the variety

Paul - My variety was met through alcohol, I developed an alter-ego when I was drinking that was brave.  Inside though, I felt so vulnerable and insecure; I kept people at a distance, because I couldn’t cope emotionally

    Significance

Bill – Like lots of people in corporate life,  I sought significance through trying to move higher in the management structure and gain more control

Paul – In my 'white phases' of life, my significance was fuelled by my charity work; in my black phases, it was fuelled by the alcohol

    Love & Connection

Bill – I was brought up in an atmosphere of love where I felt very connected with my family and had a particularly special connection with my father

Paul – my experience was very polarised; my love was for my mother and womankind, I recognised the strength of women, emotionally

    Higher level – Growth

We all grow and develop through the experiences and the events we go through

We both have a clear understanding of what we are here to do; our growth is conscious.

    Higher level – Contribution

Paul – My contribution is to serve. Once you find your purpose in life, the world becomes an amazing place

Bill – My purpose is to inspire others to be better. Now I can actively pursue my purpose I’m much more focused, it is much more fulfilling to be giving back

    • When you find your purpose, it will change your life forever. It’s about giving back, about contributing to our planets expansion everybody has a part to play.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We are reacting to the world around us’

‘My needs have become the tail on the metaphorical dog’

‘This is my story, I own it, I believe in it and I commit to it’

‘People who are control freaks have a high need for certainty’

‘Most of us just go about meeting our needs doing what we do, just to survive’

‘You have taken massive learning from your experience to help you grow and develop’

‘You’ll never destroy me because I am so much stronger than you’

‘Almost like a kamikaze pilot mentality’

‘Life is a simple game, a question of choices and fear versus love’

‘Over the years I’ve been able to detach from things and view life from a higher level’

‘For some people, their purpose is deeply buried’

  • The World Through A Young Person's Eyes - Julia Searcey

Paul is exploring the world through his eyes and those of Julia; the latter being part of today's younger generation. Together they provide an insightful and balanced view of how different generations could come together successfully.

This podcast also demonstrates how different generational viewpoints share many more underlying commonalities than you might initially think, a fascinating listen tune-in now.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

You can’t stereotype young people any more than you can stereotype any group of people but there are obvious variances and one of those is technology

    • Technology

The internet is a good thing, but it means you don’t have to go out or use a variety of sources such as books, to access the world; it is all there in front of you

Technology has helped people to be much more aware of the dangers in the world

The younger generation conducts their lives via social media. They don’t always want to engage with other people face-to-face

There are not many resources that educate older people about technology but having these skills could help them to feel less lonely; as it would be so easy to connect with others

    • Communication

Previously you formed relationships by talking to people. The instant gratification world of today was non-existent, and you had to actually talk to other people!

People are growing up with more anxiety than previous generations and communicating with others face-to-face can be a source of concern for some individuals

    • Happiness

Being the best we can be, will bring us happiness. If the prospect of working for an employer 9-5 every day is what makes you feel unhappy then you need to take action

You must take the power back and decide what you’re going to do, when you’re going to do it and how you’re going to do it

You will need to take action to facilitate the journey into a new life if you take no action everything will remain the same

Everybody is different and it’s about finding out what’s best for you. Wherever you are in life is irrelevant, it’s what you are doing now that’s important.

It's conditioning and labels that create self-limiting beliefs and create a self-fulfilling prophecy

    BEST MOMENTS

‘People do the best they can from their level of awareness at that time’

‘Maybe if there was more communication between the generations, we would understand each other better’

‘Do what makes you happy, do what you want to do, let  life happen through you, not to you’

‘Events in life are neutral - it’s the emotion we attach to them’

‘We irrespective of our generation have to be adaptable and empathetic’

‘Entrepreneurs seek happiness in a different way’

‘The only power and energy something has, is what you give it’

‘We have to put more boundaries in place these days because there are more threats now’

  • Choices - A Question Of Awareness

    A Question of Awareness

In this episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, Paul chats with Derek Jackson, a qualified mental health nurse about the importance of awareness, especially for those who want to change the course of their lives for the better.; to help understand your purpose and how you will travel a path where there will be not just opportunities, but also challenges

Derek also shares how the nursing profession can be a vocation for those people who want to help others. Derek has a passion for caring for people and has spent 46 years doing so with the NHS.

Paul and Derek emphasise that being vulnerable and reaching out to someone, may it be formal or informal, is never a sign of weakness. One can never learn and do stuff on their own. It pays to be receptive of your loved one’s advice and be observant of other people. Another thing they highlight, is people should stop using labels on themselves, their aspirations, and their end goals. Discover the reason behind it when you tune-in.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Paul: So at that early age, were you aware that you were that type of person who got a very caring nature?

Derek: I don’t think it was evident. I just thought I was the sort of person who’d want to help people. I look back in my childhood, I look back in my school years, I think I had it in me, but it became more developed when I went through my nursing career… I came from a caring family… we were encouraged by [my parents] to help people even at the very basic level

    • Your vocation is your calling and Derek thinks that having a profession as a nurse is a vocation. People who pursue a nursing career have innate nature to care for other people
    • We have to move away from making labels and stigmatising. Labels create self-fulfilling prophecies and this can affect you negatively. Be careful of the words you put out there. It can prevent you from doing the self-actualisation process
    • Many people who could help you with your system and understanding of certain things, but it is your responsibility if you’ll adopt it or not
    • Stop saying you’re ‘broken’. Sometimes, we only need a little guidance from our loved ones so don’t be afraid to approach them. Acknowledge the ‘bumps’ you encounter along the way
    • According to Paul, life is as simple as ABC:
    • Awareness – Everything starts with awareness because we don’t know what we don’t know
    • Beliefs – Create a belief system according to your level of awareness. Our beliefs change the more we become aware of things.
    • Creativity – Challenge who you think you are. You have to rise above it by using difference creative patterns.
    • Don’t be afraid to reach out. If you want to find happiness and contentment, people could help you grow as an individual. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Labels occur not just in the professional field but also in life generally. That makes it for people difficult to find a way.”
  • “We don’t know what we don’t know.”
“People need to understand themselves. What do they really possess? They are not aware of it so we could make them aware of them so they can resolve their particular issues.”
  • “Life is a simple game, and it’s certainly not an exact science.”
  • “We are what we are. We’re shaped by different things… We have the capacity to change. We have the capacity to be different.”
  • “The purpose of life is to be happy and to contribute.”
  • “If anybody that is purposeless or struggling or in pain or suffering, reach out and do get support from somebody, either from a professional, from a mentor, or from whoever… There is no best, there is no worst. It’s what works for you.”

  • Martin 'Mad Dog' Allen - His Legacy

In this episode, Paul interviews Martin Allen, Professional football player, coach and manager. They discuss the importance of hard work and determination in achieving your goals and the many challenges that can stand in your way

This interview is a fascinating insight into the life of a professional footballer - both during and after their playing career

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Were you aware of the expectations growing up?

When I was in the youth team at QPR, I found myself with a brilliant but intimidating coach. He quickly made it clear that I didn’t fit into his plans. This was the first time I experienced rejection and happened at the same time others in my family were doing brilliantly in their football careers

I came originally from Dagenham and was very aware of those from this area who did very well. My father who was a player, manager, coach and set up a program of boxing, athletics and labouring to increase my strength between football seasons

My body and my mentality changed. When I returned to pre-match training, there was a race for all members of the club, and I beat everyone, They could not believe their eyes!

That was the day I realised I could move from the youth team to the seniors. It changed my life, I had the self-belief that I could do it

    • What’s your life vision now?

When professional footballers finish their careers there is a great void. A chasm about how you are going to fulfill anything else in your life.

I was invited to take up the role as assistant coach and then took up several other opportunities leading to the post of manager at Gillingham FC, where we were very successful. I was able to repeat this with Barnet FC and so have achieved the things I wanted to do, professionally.

The charity work I am involved in has given me a wider awareness of what is important in life. I’ve run coaching programs and admire people who have a smile even though they may not have very much.

    • Where did ‘Mad Dog’ come from?

Not many footballers have a nickname that is so recognizable!

At the time my tackling wasn’t great, and I was very passionate which sometimes resulted in me having froth on my mouth; one of my team started calling me ‘Mad Dog’ and this was picked up by the fans

I also went on to have the nickname ‘Uncle’ with the players at Gillingham and I’m very proud of this as it’s a huge compliment. When they were asked why, it’s because they felt looked after by me as their coach.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Lots of hard work not just through natural skills’

    ‘It was character-building’

‘You’re like our favourite uncle looking after us and making sure we’re okay’

    ‘It’s about finding inner-peace’

‘I tried my best it didn’t work - that’s life!’

‘My dad was my coach and my mentor’

‘The determination, focus and self-belief along with the drive from my dad’

‘Application of hard work got me over the line’

  • From Bridges & Ballet - To Butterflies

In this episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, Paul reads to you From Bridges & Ballet… to Butterflies, which was written by Bill and Jenni Burridge, the owners of New Insights - offering personal development & coaching services in South Africa and in the UK.

There will be two parts that Paul will be reading, so make sure to tune in till the end. Bill and Jenni both share their stories on how their lives were transformed before they even started the company. They go back to when they first met at the University of Cape Town. From then on, their lives transitioned from one place to another and to one milestone to another.

Bill and Jenni claim that there are indifferences between them. But instead, of getting hindered by it, they are joyed by at how it brings new perspectives to the business side of things. Discover these and more when you listen to Paul read this fascinating story from the Burridges!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Bill shares her relationship with his partner, Jenni since he met her.
      • He first met her in college. He recalled how awkward it was meeting the love of his life dress in drag.
      • After graduation, Jenni moved to Mauritius. Bill then planned to chase after her and propose. But life can be a paradox. While the whole Mauritius was being wrecked by Typhoon Claudette, their bond became stronger and indestructible.
      • Jenni accepted, and they got married. The newly-weds moved to South Coast of Kwa Zulu-Natal and lived their normal lives. He worked for a construction team, and she opened up a fitness studio for ladies. At home, they try hard to reconcile their differences – while one opts for form, the other one chooses for function. As time grew, he felt that he could not do this his entire life – moving from one place to another.
    • Bill, then, decided to be a full-time student for a year to finish an MBA degree. This is after he did introspection and found his inner voice that has long been muted. Jenni, on the other hand, found a job as an aerobics instructor. Years passed, he joined a multinational company in the sales division.
    • On their 10th anniversary, they finally decided to have a family. Their eldest, Bianca, was born in UK. Then four years later, their sweet boy, Casey, was born.
    • Bill’s job afterwards focused on distribution, project management, and technology. His position requires a lot of travelling and thus taking his time away from his family. Jenni was at home taking care of the kids. Unfortunately, the dotcom collapse happened, so he lost his job. But as quick as he lost one, he landed on a Senior Management role in IT.
    • His career has completely u-turned from his passion which is working with people. But opportunities come when you least expect it. Just when he thought he was about to leave; his IT company started a program that needed an internal communications manager to bridge the employees and the executives. It was perfect. He was able to inspire people.  After 3 years, he was handling the internal communications of the entire organisation.
    • While Bill was busy growing his career, his role as a father and a husband was on the rocks. Their family has stayed in UK for 6 years with him, but it was already time to go home, to South Africa.
    • Since they were having familial problems, it was time to get a life coach. He enjoyed it a lot and saw improvements in his life. This gave him an idea to bring the life coaching business and its benefits to South Africa. Neil and Sharon helped and guided him about the coaching programme.
    • New Insights Africa… this is the new company of Bill and Jenni that offers life coaching for everyone.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “Unlike, opposite poles attract.”
“In wanting to ‘do the right thing’, I had suppressed my inner voice and allowed myself to be guided by peer pressure and the advice of others. Now my inner voice began to speak up. I reflected that whereas my working life had always revolved around things, my heart desired to experience working with something infinitely more challenging and exciting –people.”
  • “I learnt a salutary lesson. It was finally time to start playing my own ‘game’, doing what I loved rather than what I thought was expected of me.”

  • Family, Forest & Froth

    FAMILY FOREST AND FROTH

In this episode, we hear about a moving life journey filled with pain, addiction and the ultimate power of love to change a life.

This emotional story demonstrates how understanding the power of love can change everything for anyone who is willing to listen and make a change.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Family

My upbringing was based on nothing more than raw brutal survival. I regularly escaped school to a nearby pond which became a haven for me, playing games that were always about pretending to be someone else.

Because my dad was in and out of prison there was never enough food and so I started stealing. My conditioning for stealing grew with time and I know now I was creating a belief system around my identity.

At 9 years old, I ended up in the system and despite being moved around different children’s homes I never found love or happiness anywhere.

My crimes continued over the years, but I was now consumed by a wave of dark anger towards my parents, who I now held responsible for the lifestyle I was involved in.

During a period in prison, the suicide of a close friend brought me to a point of despair and misery where finally I began to feel shame and remorse about the way I had been living my life.

As a complete contrast, the ensuing years were all about a loving family.

I was determined that my daughter would grow up in an in a warm, supportive and loving environment with the things I had never had, and I achieved this.

My daughter has grown up to be an amazing and well-balanced individual who has 2 children of her own who I adore.

    • Forest

My passion for Nottingham Forest Football club led me to research all professional clubs in order to understand better the club I loved. When I was in prison Nottingham Forest Football club was my reason for living. I now understand this as a need to be part of a tribe and create an identity for myself

    • Froth

Years later I met Paul Lowe and along with our mutual love of Nottingham Forest we shared a serious drink addiction. We spent hours talking about our tortured pasts and how we might have had a different life.

    • Life and Legacy

My children have given me a true purpose in life and a reason to live.

My children have been a powerful force of love and my legacy is that my children haven’t grown up in the same way as me.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If all that glitters isn’t gold maybe that which doesn’t glitter is gold’

‘I started drinking at 13 to numb the pain and suffering of my shameful existence’

    ‘A reason for life’

‘Family became the glue that gave my life meaning and purpose’

‘My biggest regret is missing so much of my children’s lives’

  • Who Am I

Life often throws bad things our way but it’s how we react that matters. In this episode, Paul reads an extract from his book Speaking From OUR HEARTS , where Kevin Searcey details some of the most difficult parts of his life. Listen for how to stay loving in your life, and how to learn from someone who has thought deeply about who they are. Who Am I? is a question we all ask ourselves, listen ahead to hear Kevin's answer to that question.

    Key Takeaways

Who Am I? This is a question that we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives. Kevin tries to answers that question in terms of his own life.

Moving back with my parents it really hit home what his identity was. Changing from a husband and the bread-winner to moving home with his parents, as well as having a painful knee operation from a martial arts injury.  Kevin missed his kids extremely badly. This was when he first started questioning 'Who am I?

He sold his beloevd Reliant Robin. By now, he was feeling sorry for himself, with a crippling knee injury and a mind full of negative thoughts.  He believed his kids deserved a better dad.

Kevin's heart skipped a beat when he finally spoke to the blonde woman from the dance floor, who eventually turned out to be his soulmate. His world became challenged however, when she told me she was already married; although they did build a good friendship over the next few weeks.

Kevin then got a one bedroom flat from the housing association and tried to save money, so he could go to the nightclub 'Turners'; as well as being able to have some money to spend on his children. Over time, the two of them fell in love.

Prosperity is usually linked to financial rewards; but for Kevin, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Love and shared family are more important. He's now moving on and embracing his identity as a warrior.

Words Of Wisdom - It’s better to be a loving warrior than a nervous worrier

    Best Moments

    ‘My parents were extremely supportive.’

‘I got some money and all I could think of was buying my kids a McDonalds.’

‘My world became challenged however when she told me she was married.’

‘We fell in love over the next few weeks.’

‘She’d tried to make it work, but couldn’t
