  • Brian Stubbs: Football Nostalgia From The Enforcer

This nostalgic episode is an inside view from Brian Stubbs, professional footballer with Notts County Football Club over a number of years and with 426 appearances. Brian provides a fascinating account of playing football and being part of the football family. Known as ‘The Enforcer’ Brian discusses with Paul, the tactics and approaches to playing consistently for such a successful team.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Working together is a key element of a successful team. As a defender alongside the goal-keeper you create a defensive block. To make this successful you must work as a team, he is protecting you and you are protecting him.
    • Good management is about putting individuals in a position where they have responsibility and can do an effective job. It provides people with an opportunity to fulfill their role effectively. A good manager is able to identify and build using the strengths of individuals, to create a team that can achieve the best results.
    • Getting everybody on the same side and working together towards the same goal fosters a shared vision with everyone brought into team adding to the jigsaw. The attitude in the dressing room is an indication of the attitude of a team. A positive environment creates an atmosphere that supports the ethos of wanting to play, going out of the dressing room to start a game with the right attitude can make all the difference.
    • Feeling part of a  big family was a part of the football experience, for Brian. The football experience was about being part of the community, celebrating with fans face-to-face and spending time with the other team members. This family aspect of the footballer’s role helped to consolidate the team spirit.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Keep the game simple, Football is about kicking a ball”

“Him being more afraid of me  - someone along-side you who could help you out”

“Big family we did everything together”

  • A Message Of Faith – Kevin Searcey

In this incredibly personal episode Paul talks with someone who has undertaken a difficult journey, that lots of us will be able to empathise with. He has chosen to share his experience in order that we can understand not only the personal challenges but also how having a mentor alongside him was vital to the emotional healing process. This is a story with an incredible twist and a message for us all.

“Each and every-one of us has a vulnerability but most of us choose to put up a wall for self-protection the irony is that you’re not protecting yourself. My mentor kept saying I was going to come through it and there was part that believed in this, but a part didn’t,

He gave me the strength to keep going, one day at a time.”

    KEY TAKEWAYS

    • Faith can be defined as complete trust in someone and a mentor is someone who it is possible to have complete faith in. Having a mentor can make the difference between making it through; or not making it.
    • A mentor who has empathy and keeps believing in you can make a difference. It’s somebody who’s by your side saying you can do this, you need to embrace it. Everybody on this planet at some time needs help and support and its nothing to be ashamed of.
    • Learning to cry – lots of people grow up being expected to just get on with it but supressing feelings in this way doesn’t help. it’s important to be able to acknowledge and be honest about feelings so that its then possible to move forward
    • Understanding that the people around you do want to help. it’s important not to isolate yourself. It’s vital to believe that people love you, and to learn that it is true. There is no quick fix, but you must learn to believe in yourself.

Believe in those people who are fighting for you because they do it for a reason; because they love you - something everyone needs.

    • There are defining moments in your life and you might experience a point at which you feel everything is falling apart. Acknowledging that everyone experiences negative situations is vital and looking back and recognising what has happened to you, is an important step in the process of letting go and moving forward.
The journey forwards can seem very daunting and alongside a mentor it’s all about taking one step at a time. Every day is different and the more you do, the better it is; although each day can be a battle - it does get easier though.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Constantly, on a daily basis (my mentor) would ring me up to see how I was.”

“Kept building me up all the time; didn’t necessarily agree but appreciated him keeping me going”

“Took my breathe away, with someone just saying - thanks Kev, that helped”

“If I didn’t have that support, I don’t think I’d be here now”

“Mentor had second sense as he rang to remind me how well I was doing and that I would come through the other side”

“Faith to me, is starting to believe”

“No quick-fix but just believe in yourself”

  • Managing Healthy Celebrations

This podcast is an essential guide to managing healthy celebrations. Paul and Trainer John share advice that we can all use to ensure that any time of celebration can be enjoyed without giving up on your fitness goals. This advice can be used effectively across any period of celebration - anything from a cruise, to the Christmas holidays.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Always have breakfast.
    • Make sure to choose a healthy breakfast as this will also help you focus on achieving your goals for the day. Breakfast is the meal people often skip but it’s the most important one of all.
    • If you don’t use it, you lose it
    • When you skip meals, your metabolism is at a stand-still and doesn’t have to work to break down food.  As a result, when you do eat your metabolism is not as efficient and stores food as fat. Skipping meals can cause overeating and bingeing, which alters your metabolic rate.
    • Be mindful of what you eat
    • Survey everything before you eat and ask yourself what will I enjoy having the most?
    • Choose to eat the foods that will bring you the most satisfaction. Make sure to avoid seconds and thirds by ensuring you fill up with vegetables. Keep your plate colourful with fruit and vegetables such as cranberries and broccoli.
    • Everything in moderation
    • An important rule is to have everything in moderation including drink, as alcohol adds to the calorie count for the day. It’s a celebration but don’t over-indulge or you’ll suffer later. Listen to your body when you begin to feel full take notice and stop as this is one way to stop over-eating.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Keep it clean - to stay lean!

“Important to realise alcohol adds to the calorie count for the day”

“Before a meal, drink some water; often hunger pains are actually thirst pains”

  • Understanding Pre-Celebration Health

In today’s insightful episode of The Mastering Life Podcast, your host Paul Lowe interviews a very well-known personal trainer, John Batterby. Paul and John discuss their experiences about pre-celebrations and dive into what it is, how it works and how you can benefit.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Pre-celebration. Could be something like a a family get-together, Christmas, weddings etc.
    • With this in mind, lots of people will take their eyes off what they're doing; particularly their goals & short-term goals.
    • In this time, you need to be focused on what you do or were supposed to do and also, you should keep in mind that you need to stay healthy throughout for you to be able to work efficiently and achieve your success.
    • What happens when you start dodging and your cutting things out from your food; what your body requires, your metabolic rate slows down then what happens is your body starts panicking and start storing fat so at the end of the celebration when you go back to normal you start putting weight on very easy because the metabolic rate is really slow.
    • If you are somebody that doesn't actually do any physical exercise/ training and its celebration time, carry on eating as normal but make sure you're eating clean, healthy things.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “Most people only want to do things excessively over a short period.  A pre-period of celebration is getting ready and relaxed - spending some quality time with the families."
    • “It’s best to keep the physical exercise/ training going.”
    • “Eat clean, eat well but intensify your training if it’s on celebration period.”
