  • Ep. 89: Breaking the Handcuffs - Navigating Pregnancy as a Man: A Conversation with Trystan Reese

Trystan Reese is an established thought leader, educator, and speaker, focusing on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. He is a professionally trained anti-racism facilitator and curriculum designer, studying under Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington at the Social Justice Training Institute. Trystan has also been organizing with the trans community for nearly two decades and has been on the frontlines of this generation’s biggest fights for LGBTQ justice.

Trystan launched onto the global stage as “the pregnant man” in 2017 when his family’s unique journey gained international media attention. He was invited to give closing performances for The Moth Mainstage in Portland, Albuquerque, and Brooklyn; a video of the Brooklyn event has garnered over 2.5 million views. Trystan partnered with many major media outlets, including CNN, NBC, People, and Buzzfeed, to bring his message of love and resilience to the mainstream.

The founder of Collaborate Consulting, Trystan provides customized training solutions for individuals, organizations, and communities interested in social justice. He has trained hundreds of medical providers on LGBTQ inclusion, has delivered keynotes at dozens of conferences and convenings, and is releasing his first book in the spring of 2021.

He is married to his partner Biff and they live in Portland, Oregon with their three kids: Lucas, Hailey, and Leo. They are very happy.

    In today's conversation we cover:

    1) How the current societal gender norms are rigid and harm many people, not just those in the LGBTQ+ community

    2) Everyone wants to be seen and heard, and the best way to communicate our wants and needs is by listening and understanding, even if we don't like what is being said

    3) We each need to do the work to develop our personal resiliency and recognize that hard conversations are not a threat (as our brain would sometimes have us believe), but instead are opportunities for us to learn and grow

Be sure to check out Trystan on Instagram @biffandi, Facebook, and his website https://collaborate.consulting

I hope you enjoy the conversation!

  • Ep. 88 [Leadership] It's OK to Not be OK All the Time

Today I talk about leadership & before you hit skip, let me be clear...if you are a human on this earth, you are a leader. As leaders, I think our default is to carry the weight of our team on our shoulders. Shoulder their worry, their hurt and there are many times that is needed, but not all the time. I share a recent example of when I showed up as a leader & allowed others to show up as well.

"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly but rarely admit the change it has gone through to achieve that beauty." - Maya Angelou

The comparison game - we all do it, but it sucks, doesn't it? Today, I dive into a story about a lesson I learned from reading a letter that was written to my grandfather over 20 years ago about regrets. Life is too short to live with regrets. What are you doing today to make one of your dreams a reality?

  • Ep. 85: From Breaking the Handcuffs to Living On Her Own Terms: A Conversation with Sara Young Wang

Sara is a career change coach for millennial professionals who are unhappy in their jobs or careers. Most of her clients are in jobs they worked hard for and thought would make them happy, but they're finding themselves exhausted and increasingly miserable.

They know they need to do something to change their situation and know this line of work isn’t for them, but don't know what to do about it. There’s a lot of confusion and 'I don’t knows'. They’re wondering how to get from where they're at now to a life they enjoy. All they know is their job may look great on paper, but feels terrible to them.

Sara helps them gain the clarity they’re searching for on what they want to do to change their current work to a career that brings them greater fulfillment and happiness and get the confidence to take action and go after it!

    In today's discussion, we cover:

    • Self-worth is independent of your titles and accomplishments, it just is
    • Fear (of judgment, failure, etc.) is often a motivating factor for what we are doing in life, but we need to step back from that fear and find what our authentic self is and live for that
    • The work of acceptance comes from within, and we can use that to choose which spaces we navigate towards and those we shy away from
    • You do not have to justify your existence with a title

    • Sara states: "I'm only able to be able to help others with this because it's a path I had to walk for myself. I was right there too, feeling conflicted, frustrated, disappointed asking, 'Is this all there is? I worked so hard to get here, but it’s not what I thought it would be.' Prior to being a coach, I ran a social impact startup, worked for a global top management consultancy, worked for the United Nations in Europe and pushed my way through a Masters degree at the London School of Economics. And only after hitting a wall of unhappiness and stress-induced illness was I willing to take a look at what was really going on inside me. All of this was really done from a place of needing to be "successful" to prove myself and feel "good enough." My choices really had very little to do with who I am, what felt good to me and what I genuinely wanted. And I had to learn how to navigate the world in a new way, honoring those things...starting with uncovering what they even are!"

Sara is a contributing writer of career guidance on Forbes.com and has her own blog.

    • Ep. 84: "It's Not Fair, Mama" A glimpse into my journey as a mom learning to unlearn racial & cultural biases

"The time is always right to do what is right." Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today I dive deep into a question posed to me on Instagram: "Do you find it hard to understand where others are coming from based on your background? Do you get blind sighted by cultural experiences you didn't know growing up?" These are good f'ing questions and I dig deep into explaining my upbringing, getting honest about my privilege & how it was with this foundation that I have been able to learn of & unlearn a lot of my biases in order to come into conversations with an open mind & open heart.

I hope you enjoy the conversation!

      • Ep. 82: Aspiring to be Undefinable [My Truth Tuesday]

"Labels can only confine. Aspire to be Undefinable." Colin Wright

Today I share my truth about how I've been struggling, 1 week since leaving Google, with how to identify myself in this new world I've created for myself. I've lived the better part of the 36 years of my life by labels - Googler, Wife, Infertility Warrior, Mom - and now I don't want to be labeled a SAHM, I don't want to be labeled an entrepreneur. I want 2021 to be the year of Jessi - truly & authentically me.

        In this episode, I share:

*How I had to get really honest with myself to answer the question "Who is Jessi?"

*Questions I asked friends, family, co-workers to see how I was showing up (and more importantly, if I was showing up in the same way with different groups of people!)

*What you can expect from me & the podcast in 2021

As always, I hope you find your Voice. Speak your Truth & lead with Heart.

      • Ep.81: I'm calling BS on your handcuffs (you're welcome)

In today's conversation I am going to piss a lot of you off by telling you the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts (you're welcome in advance). I call bullshit on your excuses aka your handcuffs. Because you know what, we only get one life and when we are honest with ourselves & get clear on what we want, we can take intentional action. I also get really honest about the process it took to get to the point where I could leave my well paid job at Google and (spoiler alert!) we had to make hard financial decisions (we will still need to!) in order for us to do so. Because when you want something enough, you figure out a way to get it.

As always, I hope you find your voice, speak your truth & lead with heart.

      • Ep. 80: F*ck the Handcuffs: Taking the leap & breaking free of my golden handcuffs

Welcome to 2021 friends! If you follow me on Insta, you already know my phrase for 2021 is F*ck the Handcuffs. Today, I dive into what that phrase means to me, but spoiler alert...I am letting go of the 'handcuffs' that have been holding me back, most notably the golden handcuffs of my corporate job. Eeks!

        In today's episode I share:

*The reactions (of mostly women) when I told them I was leaving Google, and how it made me realize that many of us are holding ourselves back

*How I got to the point where I made the decision to leave Google after 13+ years (there was a lot of 'Not this. Not this. Not this!)

*What to expect on the podcast in 2021 (digging deeper, really having uncomfortable (for me!) conversations around what handcuffs are keeping us small

I'm ready to leave my handcuffs behind & step into my power.

        Your voice is your power.
