  • Balancing Business, Photography and Modeling
In this interview I speak with Sacramento California based portrait photographer Christine Alward. We discuss her journey into professional modeling and her subsequent transition into running her own photography business. Christine is a photographer with an affinity for making portraits.
Her path to photography was winding. It started at a young age with a foundation in dance which allowed her to travel to New York and Italy. She also had a strong interest in landscape photography and a great fondness for Yosemite and the California Coast. There as no denying that a love for the arts had a strong hold on her.
Her photographic style and connection with her subjects has made Christine’s work desirable across many genres of photography. From family and senior portraits, to corporate headshots and commercial branding, Christine’s ability to put her clients at ease has been the driving force behind her continued growth.

This week we are pleased to bring you the amazing Craig Colvin.  More than a typical photographer, Craig is a fountain of ideas with the energy to bring them to life.  His photography covers every setting that comes to mind. Deserts, mountains, beach, or under water you will find Craig making photographic magic. A frequent exhibitor and competitor, his work has been exhibited over fifty times in the last three years alone.  Craig's work can also be seen in publications like VOLO, La Grand, 43mm and much more.
    Workshops and tutorials
More than just producing beautiful work, Craig enjoys teaching others.  Check out "Photographing the Human Form" in the TWiP School or join him with UT Adventures and learn first hand.

  • Marketing to Photographers
In this interview I sit down with New York City based photographer, educator and marketer James Maher. James and I discuss some of the tips and suggestions for photographers just starting to think about building a business.

James is a lifelong New Yorker, and like many Manhattanites, he is a terrible driver and cook; however, he is an excellent navigator and knows where to find the best Chinese takeout. James has devoted himself to his photography business in New York since 2005. His fine-art photography has been sold and licensed to collectors and companies globally, he works with various businesses as a portrait and studio photographer in New York, he is a regular contributor (both photographic and written work) to a variety of websites and magazines, and as a certified New York tour and workshop guide, he frequently leads photography workshops. He has also had a multi-year regular feature for the NY Daily News reporting on different neighborhoods of the city through street portraits and interviews with locals.

James has also been working on a documentary project since 2012, which consists of nearly 200 portraits and in-depth interviews primarily with long-time residents, business owners, and employees in the East Village neighborhood of New York City. The project has become a historical account of the mid-to-late 20th Century of one of the most vibrant and lively neighborhoods in the city.

  • Chasing the Shot
I normally have an easy time writing these posts, but with this guest it's much tougher. Anthony D'Angio is a professional photographer, mountaineer and explorer of life. His bio says that his "primary goal is to inspire by bringing you into my world through storytelling, photography, videography and most importantly, passion". I am here to tell you he does.

I first found Anthony through Twitter, where he was one of my main inspirations. As a music photographer myself, his music industry work, with brands and artists like the Country Music Association (CMA), the BBC, Disney, Eric Church, and numerous other artists on live music, album covers and promotional content blew me away. He is just that good. His brand Get Flex’d was a social media hit, reaching over 70,000 followers, and created a nickname for him of “Flex”.

At the beginning of 2017, that all changed. This guy was willing to put a successful brand to bed. 2016, while being a rewarding year, brought some personal challenges to Anthony, so he took a step back and rejuvenated his passion for a wider range of photography. That brings us to the shot for this episode.

Seen more outdoors nowadays than indoors, Anthony is constantly traveling, hiking, and climbing whatever mountains he can. His ultimate goal is conquering the Seven Summits and sharing that journey through photography. And when I say "mountains", I mean MOUNTAINS. His long term plan is the South Col of Everest in 2020, which he is currently in training for. In March of 2017 he did the trek to Everest Base Camp, raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society. Anthony is a storyteller, with every photo servings a purpose – whether it is to document his life in words and pictures, to inspire someone through his passion or to raise awareness for this beautiful planet we live on.

I hope this conversation with Anthony inspires you as much as he has inspired me over the years. Be sure to also follow his Hashtags: #YourWorld though #MyEyes.

Join Anthony D'Angio and I as we discuss the difficulties of shooting in the elements of altitude and weather, as we examine his amazing image of the Tengboche Monastery, located at 13,000 feet in the Himalaya.

    Welcome back to TWiP GLAM!

Today we feature the work of Toronto based photographer, instructor, and artist, Oz John.  Oz came to the world of photography through a formal education in advertising, graphic design and art direction.  This is a powerful combination, bringing an artistic sense and skilled leadership to image creation.

Oz’s work stands out as an exposition of creativity with in a well controlled formal framework.  Gazing from image to image you will find a tremendous attention to detail from pixels to emotional punch. The deliberate intention of his work is evident from the posing of his subject to his choice of textures to the use of shadows and light.

With a portfolio stretching into editorial, portrait, fashion and advertising, Oz’s work is a joy to behold and a delight to interview!

  • The Dramatic Portrait
In this interview New York City based portrait photographer Chris Knight joins me to discuss how he has developed his personal style, the importance of disregarding gear, and also his thoughts on post-processing vs "real photography".

Chris Knight was born in Wiesbaden, Germany and hardened by the sweaty, nearly chewable, humidity of Florida. He combines his unconditional love of art history with his conditional love of technology, topping it off with a flare for the cinematic and an uncompromising eye for detail.

His work has appeared in or on Vogue, People, MSNBC, ABC, Ocean Drive, GQ and others.

Chris is an instructor at Pratt Institute as well as the New York Film Academy.
