  • Building with Light
Today on TWiP GLAM! we bring you the art of photographer Eric James. Eric is a true jack of all trades, with a hand in the fields of commercial, fashion, aviation and most importantly, glamour!
Eric started down the path of photography as a child after discovering a darkroom in a friend’s home.  This lit his photographic fire and he has never looked back.  Thanks to his reputation for hard work and generosity, Eric has become an invaluable asset to his local photographic community.
With his portfolio ranging to all corners of the photographic world, there’s no pinning Eric down to just one genre.  The hallmark of his work is his use of light and lines. Eric may have started in the world of film and darkrooms, but those days are behind him.  Digital is the calling card of the day and Eric has embraced it.  Eric splits his time between still photography, videography, and animation.

  • Photographing Sacramento, CA
    Exploring California's biggest small town
Having just discovered the Sacramento Valley, I sit down with one of Sac's best commercial and fashion shooters, Tim Engle. Tim and I discuss his career, stealthy Sacramento, and much more.

It turns out Sacramento, California is one of those “hidden gem” towns of Northern California. Sac happens to be the capitol of California — though most people call San Francisco or Los Angeles the “unofficial capitol cities” of the massive state. I would guess that most people think of the Sacramento area as a relatively boring government town surrounded by agriculture. And yes, on the surface that is PART of what Sacramento is about.

However, as I’ve recently discovered, there’s an entirely different side of Sac — a vibrant, life-filled, youthful and rapidly growing city-town that happens to be roughly just 90 minutes away from the San Francisco Bay. 90 minutes may not seem like much, except for when you factor in the steep decline in housing prices when you exit the “event horizon” of the Bay Area real estate market. That 90 minutes can mean a lot, in terms of quality-of-life.

A born-and-raised Sacramento native, Tim Engle gives his thoughts on his home town — from a photographer’s perspective.
    About Tim
Sacramento commercial photographer and native Tim Engle cultivated a passion for photography in his early teens and has since successfully turned that love into a full time career. Flowing seamlessly between portraits, fashion, avant-garde, and commercial photography, KVIE PBS selected him as one of California’s Master Photographers in 2011.

  • Confessions of a Blue Hour Roof-Topper in Dubai

High perspectives for high dynamic range.
In this interview I had the opportunity to dive into an in-depth discussion with roof-top photographer Daniel Cheong. Using techniques he has refined over the years, Daniel has created a body of work containing some of the most stunning images ever taken of Dubai.

We discuss his techniques for shooting vertical panoramas aka "Vertoramas" as well as his thoughts and reasoning behind manually blending images, versus using automated HDR software.
    In his own words...
'Straight out of the camera' is a concept which I am not familiar with. I don't pretend to show reality, but an idealized version of it.

I was born in Mauritius, originally of Chinese descent, and French by nationality.  My job in the telecom industry requires that I travel frequently to multiple destinations including France, USA, Japan, Singapore, though I live in Dubai now.

I've always loved photography, but only became serious about it when I bought my first DSLR in Singapore, back in 2006. I joined Flickr around that time, where I discovered the world of High Dynamic Range photography.

I then aimed to perfect the technique of Digital Blending, which consists of manually blending multiple bracketed exposures in order to obtain the maximum dynamic range, while trying to keep a very natural look and avoiding the common mistake of many 'overcooked' HDR images. This slight element of the surreal, or hyper reality often found in painting is what I am trying to achieve.

I find the city most appealing when it is shot from the highest vantage points, and specially at the 'Blue Hour'.

  • Save Your Images
Save your images with these three easy steps!
On this week's show, we share our experience with creating a reliable system of backups to save your images from disaster.  Take your first step with this dive into the software, hardware, and logic behind a good backup system.
    Step 1: One master file
The first step to protect yourself against data loss is to build a master volume.  Gather of your images on to one master volume. This may seem like putting all of your eggs in one basket, but without bringing order to chaos, your backup strategy will never stand the test of time.
    Step 2: Two separate methodologies
Even the best backup strategy can fail so make your backup method redundant as well. We recommend using both incremental backups and cloning of your master file.
    Step 3: Three locations
Don't condemn all of your hard drives to the same fate. Backup hard drives containing copies of your master files should be separated from one another in a way that independently protects them from fire, water, and theft.
