  • TWiP Apps 17: Photomatix; HDR for the Ages
    TWiP Apps 17: Photomatix
HDR, or High Dynamic Range photography, has been around for longer than you may realize — largely thanks to the engineering minds at HDRsoft. Before HDR evolved to what it is today, it started as simply tone mapping, and the generating of 32-bit images in Photoshop. Today it’s used for everything from landscapes to real estate… can be fantastical or practical… and can make the impossible, real. The results are your dreams… and the software is Photomatix.
Join me, PhotoJoseph, for this episode of TWiP Apps with guest Ron Pepper, Photomatix Insider.

  • TWiP Family 74: Danielle Hatcher – Inspired by Light
This week on TWiP Family it’s an interview with Danielle Hatcher. Danielle is a mother, teacher and photographer. She loves photographing families in their homes. Danielle tells us about how a rejection early in her photography journey stung at first and then inspired her to be a better photographer. We also talk about how she made the transition from from photographing families outside in parks to inside their homes.
Danielle lives in California and the homes she often photographs in are well lit. It sounds like a photographer’s dream. Danielle tells us what she likes about the plentiful flat light in the homes and how it has helped her be more creative in her work. We talk about different kinds of light – flat light, directional light and backlight. We discuss the what each kind of light is and how best to use it when photographing families.
If you’d like to learn more about how Danielle works, she teaches a workshop through the Click Photo School – Life Inside – In-Home Lifestyle Photography.

    365 Project
Danielle and I talked about her 365 that she didn’t finish but she still learned from it. Since January 1, 2016, I’ve been posting photos daily along with an amazing group of TWiP Family listeners. You can see my project and the 365 projects of other TWiP Family listeners in theTWiP Family 365 Project 2016 group on Flickr. It’s not too late to start a project or start thinking about starting on in 2017.
Back on Episode 56 with Simon Ringsmuth, we talked about the value of a photo blog. Since then, I’ve been thinking about starting to write on a blog like I used to do. This week, I finally got around to doing that. You can see the one recent post at Familiar Light.

  • Introducing Pocketshooters!
Introducing a new podcast on the TWiP Network — Pocketshooters!
It’s a show we created to address the rising popularity of mobile phone based photography. This show will cover the new apps, techniques, phones and accessories that seem to be appearing on an almost weekly basis. Though we will stick to a consistent publish schedule, we will also publish “inter-episode” installments depending on what’s happening in the industry, or even if the inspiration strikes us.
Season 1 of Pocketshooters is hosted by myself (Frederick Van Johnson, and Giulio Sciorio). We’re both self-confessed mobile (and mirrorless) nuts and we’re very excited to bring you this new series.
This show is going to be a ton of fun, and I hope you’ll come along on the ride with us. We may not be perfect during this first season, but rest assured things will get better and better as time goes on.
    Subscribe to Pocketshooters now!
We’re trying something new with this show, crowd funding. If you’d like to help keep Pocketshooters going please consider becoming a patron over at http://patreon.com/pocketshooters.
Frederick Van Johnson — He is the host of the popular podcast, This Week in Photo, also known as TWiP. It’s a show where he and a few other photographers, or other industry professionals get together to discuss what has been happening over the past week in the world of technology, politics, art and science as they apply to photography.

Giulio Sciorio — Hi I’m Giulio! I’m a minimalist photographer who creates content for small screens in a social world. My photographic roots began in film so I like to create as much of my work as possible in camera. In a digital world this authentic way of creating gets the work online fast.

  • Pocketshooters on iPhone 7
Apple have recently announced the next update to the iPhone line of camera. The iPhone 7 is the latest and the greatest version of the iPhone to hit the world. As usual, the new phone has better… everything, over the previous version. But this time instead of merely incremental cosmetic and performance enhancements, this time Apple have begun updating the hardware. Of note to the Pocketshooter audience, there’s the addition of dual cameras and some sweet software that combine to allow photos never before possible on an iPhone.
Is it worth buying or waiting? What accessories may or may not work with it? Camera comparison with 6S, (telephoto not stabilized in 7 vs 6S with lens attachment) HEADPHONES!!

  • Pocketshooters on Lightroom Mobile
With Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Mobile you can share pro-quality images from your smartphone or tablet using tools built with Adobe Photoshop technology. Refine your shots in a tap with more than 40 presets. Tweak color, adjust clarity, and add vignettes. You can even connect to other Adobe apps like Photoshop Fix to retouch and refine your work.
We really dig this app, it shoots DNG with 6S, meaning you get a raw workflow without needing to upgrade.

  • The END of All About the Gear?
Hello fans of All About the Gear! It’s been some time since the guys have posted anything for this show and for that I personally apologize.
However, All About the Gear is not dead! We’re just switching formats. Instead of focusing exclusively on cameras and lenses, the show will now cover *all* gear thats related to photography and photographers.
This is a huge evolution of this show. And season TWO of All About the Gear will commence shortly, with a brand new host — A.D. Wheeler of Exploratographer fame. A.D. is already busy at work digging into hot new gear to share with you.
But to whet your appetite for the upcoming flood of new episodes, shortly I’ll be releasing a quick review I recorded for you.
Thanks for your loyalty to TWiP and to All About the Gear, and I can’t tell you how excited I am for this next evolution of the show. Check out A.D. Wheeler’s stuff over at TheExplorographer.com.
I’d also like to welcome our sponsor for season 2 of All About the Gear, Zenfolio!

  • Drobo 5C Review
Drobo has established itself as the “understandable” RAID solution for people who need to store A LOT of data, and need to store it safely. With its “Beyond Raid” technology, the company addresses several concerns plaguing photographers. First, we are always creating MORE data! Giant raw files, 4K video, or just Photoshop documents with a bazillion layers. Over time, it adds up. And losing any of this data is non-negotiable. Secondly, photographers need storage that we can expand without copying all of our files to a bigger drive every year. And lastly (but not least) we need speed.
Drobo solves these problems with their drive enclosures, and they’ve just released an entry level unit called the Drobo 5C. It doesn’t have the Thunderbolt ports found on the more expensive models, instead it has a USB-C port. So, it’s great for backup.
Like all Drobo’s, the 5C protects your data from single, or dual hard drive failures. Drobo immediately starts rebuilding data on the failed drive to protect your data using available space. In the back ground Drobo does “data scrubbing” which means it reads your data looking for inconsistencies or corruption and does repairs.
The Drobo 5C also has a battery that protects all data in memory or cache. So, if power suddenly goes away, Drobo moves any in-transit data to onboard flash in your Drobo so it will be protected. The protected data will be moved to your disk drives once power is restored. This ensures your important information is safe and sound. The battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of you Drobo.
Drobo 5C will support up to 64TB drive sizes. But you can start with much less. Start with the capacity you need today, then when more storage space is needed, throw in another drive, or replace a smaller capacity drive with a larger one. You can just buy the best drive at the best price when you need more space.
Hard drives slide into their drive bays with no metal carriers or assembly required. The face-plate is easy to remove because it’s held in place with magnets.
Lights on the front tell you what’s happening – if you can read a traffic light, you’re already a Drobo expert. Each blue LED along the bottom represents 10% utilization letting you know exactly how much capacity is consumed. Green, yellow or red LEDs keep you informed of each drives status at all times. Unsure of what the lights mean? All the information is right there on the back of the magnetic cover.
Essentially the 5C is really a rebranding of the original Drobo. Since its birth Drobo has gone on to expand their product line, but it all started with this little puppy. And it’s still kicking after all these years.
If you’re looking for an easy to use, inexpensive back-up RAID solution. You should definitely give the Drobo line, and particularly the 5C a look.

TWiP Weddings 049: Apps for Wedding Photographers with Photo Joseph
While photo apps feel like they’ve been around forever, the reality is that the app market is still a relatively new market. While there are a handful of apps that most photographers are familiar with like Instagram, VSCO, Snapseed – there are literally thousands of other apps that people may not have heard of that can do some interesting things.
Joseph is here today to talk about the current state of the photo app market and share some lesser-known apps that might be of interest to wedding & portrait photographers.
