  • TWiP Apps 18: Affinity Photo; To Affinity and Beyond!
    TWiP Apps 18: Affinity Photo
Affinity Photo, from the UK based company Serif, is ONE of an eventual three part series of apps designed to fill your photo editing, design, and page layout needs. Based on modern tech, clever engineering and perhaps a bit of magic fairy dust, Affinity Photo is incredibly fast and impressively deep. For those tired of the subscription model of certain other software companies, Affinity Photo may do everything you need at a fraction of the cost. Its brethren apps, Affinity Design for vector based illustration and a forthcoming layout app, as well as an iPad version with feature parity on the horizon, you may find that you are, in fact, ready to take your photo editing to Affinity… and beyond.
Join me, PhotoJoseph, for this episode of TWiP Apps with guest Ashley Hewson, Managing Director at Serif.
    Twitter: @Macaffinity
    Website: https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/

  • TWiP Family 76: Jenna Shouldice on Documenting the Birth Process
I’m sharing my interview with Jenna Shouldice on documenting the birth process. Jenna is a documentary photography and mother of an adorable 11 month old. I was introduced to her work while watching Kirsten Lewis on Creative Live. Jenna joined Kirsten to talk about birth photography.
On today’s show we start by talking about her birth photography. It’s a topic I usually find irresistable and it’s even more so at this moment being just a few months away from giving birth myself. We also talk about why Jenna enjoys documentary photography, and how watching and photographing other families has given her perspective with her own little girl. Jenna talks about capturing moments that are hard in a beautiful way, how she and her husband work together and what she loves about the workshops she does with Kirsten Lewis.

TWiP Weddings 050: Why You Can Use a Mirrorless Camera Professionally
A recent article on F-Stoppers by Vanessa Joy, cited several reasons why she doesn’t feel that she can use a mirrorless camera when photographing a wedding. Are her points valid or was the article just click-bait? Since we have two photographers on our panel who frequently shoot weddings with both Sony & Fuji mirrorless cameras, we thought we’d provide a rebuttal to this article with our thoughts on why you can use a mirrorless camera professionally.

  • TWiP Family 75: Learning to Speak the Language of Photography

This week’s show is a conversation with photographer Garen Marguerian about learning the language of photography. Garen has posted photos daily in the TWiP Family 365 Project group on Flickr along with other listeners this year. The topic of feedback and criticism comes up in the group discussions from time to time. I loved what Garen had to say about both giving and receiving feedback and wanted to hear more.
Garen talks about the ways he’s learned to speak the language of the image. First he learned from brutally honest Flickr groups, then a local group of photographers and the Arcanum. We talk about the vulnerability of both the person sharing their image for feedback and the person who is giving feedback.

  • TheFIX Season 3: Welcome Renee Robyn

Renee Robyn, welcome to your show…
You may have noticed that lately we’ve been making a bunch of changes to the TWiP Network, and if you’re perceptive you might be able to discern what’s happening. In short we are shifting things to appeal to broader audiences, and to provide more value to the photographic community. TheFIX is one of our popular shows, and though Photoshop post-processing education is (and likely always will be) important — we feel there are several outlets online that provide stellar training on that topic. There’s Lynda.com, KelbyTraining.com, CreativeLive and the list goes on. Heck, in a pinch you can even learn almost everything you need to know about Photoshop for free using services like YouTube or AdobeTV.
So, instead of throwing our hat into an already crowded ring, we took a step back and looked at what was missing from the mix. And it became clear that the instructional world is top heavy with the “nuts and bolts” of software, but there is a huge deficit when it comes to highlighting amazing artists and getting inspiration though their processes and techniques.
Renee Robyn is a Photographer, digital compositing artist, model and my friend. I can’t think of anyone more suited to the task of bringing the reality of the digital art world to the masses then she. She’s an amazing person, her artwork is amazing, and when you learn about her story you will be amazed.
Welcome Renee Robyn, to your show.
    About Renee
Canadian born and raised, Renee is a former model turned photographer who has developed an ethereal style, combining fact and fiction. Merging together expertly shot photographs with hours of meticulous retouching in Photoshop, her images are easily recognizable and distinctly her own. She travels full time, shooting for clients and teaching workshops around the world.

  • TWiP Talks 59: Inside Macphun
Macphun rose in just a few short years to become a formidable software company in the industry. Starting with creating iOS apps, the company quickly moved into the plug-in industry, and now they’ve been creating beautiful and innovative desktop software that helps photographers create images they never thought possible. Macphun is a scrappy company that’s able to move quickly and adjust to market demands. While some of their larger competitors (like Adobe) may have vastly more marketshare, but they cannot move as quickly or be as responsive to the user base as a small company can.
Macphun’s headquarters is in the Ukraine, where much of the software development happens. They also have offices in San Diego, USA where much of the sales and marketing magic happens.
In this episode, I sit down with Alex Tsepko – Managing Partner, and Kevin La Rue – Vice President. We discuss one of the company’s newest programs, Aurora HDR 2017. Aurora was launched last year to rave reviews, and they’ve updated the software with new features and performance updates.

Alex Tsepko is responsible for all aspects of daily operations, marketing, PR, sales activities and strategy for the company which has grown to 50 people worldwide with a customer base numbering over 30 million. Tsepko has a Master’s degree in Media Management & Marketing from Kyiv National University.

Kevin La Rue has had a 25+ year career as a product and
marketing professional in the field of consumer and Internet software, specializing the last 10 years in the photography field. He joined Macphun in mid-2013 to help launch the firm’s U.S. presence and currently drives all activities in support of the company’s professional photographic software products. La Rue has a BSBA degree from the University of Arizona and was an inaugural graduate of the Karl Eller Center for Entrepreneurial Studies Honors Program.
