In this interview I sit down with globe-trotting photographer Ralph Velasco to discuss his experiences traveling in and around Vietnam. We also discuss my upcoming Vietnam workshop, and some tips for traveling and getting great pictures in South East Asia.

About Ralph

For the past 8 years, Ralph Velasco has been President, Founder and CEO (Chief Experience Officer) of PhotoEnrichment Adventures. He’s a travel photography instructor and international guide who has organized and led over 60 small group cultural tours, with a focus on photography, around the world. Destinations include Cambodia, Vietnam, Spain, Tuscany, Cuba (15 times), Morocco, Egypt, Iceland, Turkey, Romania, the Adriatic, the Baltics and many others.

He’s the author of “Ralph Velasco On Travel Photography: 101 Tips for Developing Your Photographic Eye & More,” as well as creator of the My Shot Lists for Travel app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch®.

Photoshop Video Compositing with Seán Duggan

In this episode of TheFIX we complete the compositing project from Episode 081, taking the steampunk radio composite and using it to explore video compositing in Photoshop. Host Seán Duggan shows how to use common Photoshop compositing skills such as layers, layer masks, smart objects, and blending modes to combine stills and video clips to create a video composite. The great thing about working with video compositing in Photoshop is that you can utilize a lot of skills with layrs, selections, masks and smart objects, that you may already know. This will be my last episode hosting TheFIX. I’ve been hosting the show for a year now, after taking over from the original host, Jan Kabili. It’s been a great ride and over the course of 54 episodes I’ve really enjoyed bringing you a range of guests to talk about a variety of post-processing topics covering Photoshop, Lightroom, mobile apps, plug-ins, and backup strategies. I want to give a shout-out to Frederick Van Johnson and thank him for the opportunity to host this show. And if you’re not familiar with some of the other photography podcasts on TWIP, definitely check them out. There are many cool shows with talented hosts. It’s a great resource! This week is an interview with Ginger Unzueta. I was drawn to the way Ginger captures the beauty in her everyday life in both her photos and her writing. Ginger is a mother of four and teaches photography both in person and online in her Everyday Beauty class.

Ginger tells us how she photographs the same daily routine in different ways. An example we talk about is giving her baby a sink bath. She photographs the scene at different times of day, with different lenses and from a different perspective. Seeing her daily life in the is way reminds her that life isn’t happening somewhere else. It’s happening right here. Also, each day has something new to offer if we keep our eyes open.

Ginger teaches an online class, Everyday Beauty, and recently taught her first class in person to local people who wanted learn photography basics. Her Everyday Beauty class starts next week on September 26.

TWiP 482: iPhone 7 Arrives

It’s a holiday month of sorts in the tech industry, this is the month when Apple releases their newest flagship product, the iPhone. The emphasis in this release was on the iPhone 7’s camera capabilities and Apple has put their substantial weight behind upping the ante when it comes to mobile photography.

Also, Google has added new features to its already popular Google Photos app for iOS. In some ways, “fixing” one of iPhone cameras features “Live Photos”.

And lastly, we have a thought-provoking discussion about censorship and social responsibility as it applies to Facebook. Can we really consider the social network “just” a social network anymore?
