AlphaMirrorless 028: Sharing and Promoting your Photography

Sharing your work has to be one of the most fulfilling aspects of photography, yet we run into many people that don’t know the basics of sharing and promoting their work online. In this episode of the AlphaMirrorless podcast Juan and Andy give you a primer on sharing and promoting your work online. It’s much easier than you think.

This week I’m thrilled to share my conversation with Rick Sammon on learning photography little by little. Rick tells people to slow down when they’re learning photography and learn new skills one by one.

I have loved Rick’s books about photography for years. He’s written quite a few. (36!) We talk about his new book, Creative Visualization for Photographers. Rick encourages photographers to visualize the end result before they take a photograph. He compares it knowing what you are going to cook before you start dinner.

I ask Rick about his family photos. He says, “I have thousands of pictures and my most important are the photos of my family.” Rick tells us about the last photo he took of his father. He says it is his most important picture. He encourages people to photograph your loved ones – because you just never know.

Rick gives us a very quick tutorial about your child blowing out the candles on the birthday cake.

Check your shutter speed so it’s fast enough to prevent blur

Rick’s Simple Tips For Parents

Work in natural light. Bring your subject to the window and have your subject’s nose follow the light.

Shoot eye to eye with your subject instead of shooting down. Get on your child’s eye level.

Have fun. Enthusiasm is contagious. If you’re having fun. Your subject will too.

Play with shadows. Rick tells us about how he took the photo of his son that is at the top of this post.

In this interview I chat with Hasselblad’s Pontus Arvåsen about their hot new mirrorless camera, the Hasselblad X1D.

Pontus Arvåsen is a product designer and photographer working in the design team at Hasselblad HQ Gothenburg. He started his career as freelance designer in 2004.

Parallell to this he was a keen hobby photographer and after two years in the design business, following a successful photo exhibition he went full time as photographer. Initially mostly fine art nature and floral photography with several exhibitions and a successful card collection. Gradually the work shifted to more commercial work, portrait, product and fashion photography with clients such as H&M, Weekday, Volvo among others.

The combination of these two careers caught the attention of Hasselblad who hired him as a product specialist and technical investigator. Shortly there after he shifted to his current role as Product Designer. He’s a part of the design team in Gothenburg involved in all aspects of the design of the entire product range. Available products he’s been a part of until now is the aerial A6D, the H6D and the recently released X1D camera.
