Also, GoPro is now shipping its 360 degree 6-Hero4 carrying omnidirectional video rig, you might remember us talking about this product in a previous episode. Well, it’s available now… are you ready for it?

  • TWiP Talks 53: On Brooks Institute with Jeffrey Burke
Brooks Institute, a visual arts school whose alumni include Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners announced last week the end of their 70-year run.

After years of declining enrolment, tighter federal rules on for-profit schools and efforts to move the school to downtown Ventura, California – representatives announced the doors will permanently close on October 31st, 2016, and that all classes in the fall semester have been cancelled.
I was acting Chairman of the Board for the school up until last week, when myself and the remaining board members made individual and unanimous decisions to resign from the board – following the termination of the school’s president, by the parent company.
In this interview, I sit down with Jeffrey Burke, a former Chairman of the Board at the school to discuss the impact of this closure, what’s next for the students, faculty and the for-profit education industry in general.

    About Jeffrey Burke
JT Burke uses the mad photo skills that he has accumulated throughout his working life to create glimpses of a personal Paradise. His visions are cobbled together using vintage costume jewelry, each piece individually photographed and cataloged and then digitally collaged into ornate compositions that straddle the boundaries between representation and abstraction.
His inspiration is drawn from many sources including Hieronymus Bosch, Dr. Seuss, Byzantine iconography, 20th century modernists and 12 years of Catholic school education. His tightly editioned, digital compositions have been exhibited in Barcelona Spain, Bristol UK, New York City, throughout California, and have been featured in various publications including Juxtapoz and Huff Post Arts.
JT Burke lives and works in South Pasadena, CA.

  • Street Focus 101: Through Our Eyes Project with Jason Williamson
Street Focus 101: Through Our Eyes Project with Jason Williamson
About the Project: The Through Our Eyes Project hands out cameras to people who are living on the street, in a local shelter or are otherwise affected by homelessness. Unlike any project before, the homeless in communities will have an integral hand in helping expose the issue of homelessness rather than merely being the problem that others are trying to solve. Through Our Eyes Project is bigger than a social experiment. It’s greater than an art piece. It’s more important than an outreach. This project is a lifeline. The photographers will be equipped with a tool to tell their story. They will be encouraged through a word of hope. The community will be engaged to support those who work with the homeless and proceeds will help fund homeless ministries. The cameras are disposable, but the people behind them are not.
About Jason: Jason Williamson is a pastor in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After studying photography at Winthrop University, Jason worked in digital advertising sales for 10 years prior to transitioning to a career in ministry. Going on an international mission trip to a megacity in Asia changed his perspective on how he should be living his life as a Christian. Photography has been one of his passions for nearly 18 years and has become a critical tool for his ministry work as it tells stories, captures events and rethinks the role of the arts in missions and ministry.
Jason travels around the world as part of his ministry and enjoys street photography, abstracts and making ugly or disinteresting things look beautiful for people to see in a new way. He loves his wife and two children, listening to music, watching documentaries, and enabling others to use their gifts and talents to do great things.

TWiP Apps 12: Astropad; Make Your iPad Pro Astronomical
If you’ve ever tried to paint, draw, or retouch in an app like Photoshop using the mouse, then you know how cumbersome it can be. The drawing tablet is the long loved tool of professional image-makers allowing them to incorporate pressure, tilt, and natural hand movements into their work. Tablets though are expensive, and take some getting used to while you learn to paint here, but watch there. Tablets that allow you to paint directly on the screen are incredibly expensive — or at least they were, until now. If you own an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil, then you’re just one app away from a whole new brushing experience.

  • TheFIX 080: Photoshop Toning & Color Tinting
    Photoshop Toning & Color Tinting
In this episode of TheFIX, host Seán Duggan shares some tips and techniques for creating color toning and tinting (i.e., “hand coloring”) effects for black & white images. Beyond those key topics, this show also features useful tips on adjustment layers, layer masks, blending modes, and alternate ways of applying color tinting. Starting with a historical image from the Library of Congress, we start off with a look at how to create a basic sepia toning look. From there, we mix it up a bit and use multiple sepia layers and layer masks to create a varied and irregular toning effect, as well as a sepia look that also applies a darkening effect that contributes a tonal richness to the image. Next we shift gears and go over the basic “dance steps” for using adjustment layers and layer masks to create a hand colored look.
The hand coloring for the women factory workers photo was created after this episode was recorded, using the same type of techniques shown in the episode on the puma fountain photo. You can see the result below, as well as screenshots of the final layers panel for the colorized photo.

  • TWiP Family 67: Chuck Anerino on Documenting Family Life
This week’s podcast is an interview with Chuck Anerino. Chuck is a father of three boys who photographs his family in a documentary style. We talk about why got interested in making photos before he had children of his own and what those photos were like.
Chuck talks about the stages he went through to become a better photographer. Like so many of us, he spent time blurring out the background of all his photos with a wide aperture. After awhile, he wanted his photos to have more context. His photographs changed when he started using a 35mm lens and closing down his lens a little.
We discuss how Chuck creates images he finds interesting by committing to a composition and patiently waiting for something to happen. Chuck also tells us how he fell for a Leica Monochrom camera and photographed a year of his family life in black and white. He talks how that limitation made his work stronger.

  • TWiP Talks 52: iPhone Photography with Giulio Sciorio
In this interview Giulio Sciorio joins the show to discuss with me the rising importance and viability of mobile phone photography. Specifically, how the iPhone continues its dominance over point-and-shoot cameras.
The iPhone, helped along by Apples “Shot on iPhone” campaign, is showing that professional-level results can be accomplished by using a device many of us carry with us everywhere.
What’s next for mobile photography? And how can you start taking more than just food pics and selfies with the powerful device you have at your fingertips?!
    About Giulio:
Giulio is a minimalist photographer who creates content for the small screens in a social world.
G’s photographic roots began in film so he creates as much of my work as possible in camera. In a digital world this authentic way of creating gets the work online fast.
