  • TheFIX 079: Concert Photography with Alan Hess
    Concert Photography with Alan Hess
On this episode of TheFIX, Alan Hess provides a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to photograph concerts and other high-profile live events. Alan shows some of his favorite concert images, and also shares some cool processing tips, including creating default Lightroom process interpretations on a per-camera basis that will also work in Camera Raw, and using the Library panel in Photoshop to easily add personal branding to your images.
    About This Week’s Guest
Alan Hess is a San Diego-based photographer specializing in concert and live-event photography. From small club shows to big arenas, Alan enjoys the fast pace of shooting on the fly, the rush of the house lights going down, and the drive to capture the “show” in images of the first three songs. Alan is currently the house photographer for a large concert venue in Southern California and when he isn’t out shooting concerts, he is writing photography books. He is the author of fifteen books covering everything from Concert Photography to Pet Photography including books on the Nikon Creative Lighting System, Night and Low Light Photography and three books on getting the most from your iPad. Alan has contributed to Photoshop User magazine and has been a part of the Instructor Dream Team at Photoshop World since 2009.

  • TWiP Family 66: Kelly Moore Clark on Camera Bags, Lighting and Family Life
This week’s show is an interview with Kelly Moore Clark, creator of Kelly Moore Bags. Kelly was a wedding photographer and couldn’t find a bag that fit her body or her needs. She had an idea for the perfect bag and resolved to stop talking about this perfect bag and make one. Kelly had no experience making bags, but she knew what she wanted. She found people who could help her create the bags and quickly found other people who wanted the bag she’d created.
Kelly had small children, a photography business and camera bag business. It was too much. She focused on her growing family and her camera bag business. Kelly tells us how her family grew through adoption (you can see that story here). Her camera bag business also grew and now creates many styles of bags for both women and men.
One of Kelly’s passions in photography is lighting. We talk about how to get started with off camera flash and how to make great photos in all kinds of lighting situations.
Kelly is giving away a camera bag to one lucky listener. If you’d like to win a Kelly Moore bag, leave a comment here about which bag you’d choose. You can see the options at Kelly Moore Bag. A winner will be chosen on August 30, 2016.

  • TWiP Talks 51: MacPhun’s Aurora with Jim Nix
Aurora HDR is a joint project by Macphun and Trey Ratcliff, the world’s most renowned HDR photographer. This photo software brings together into one application what previously took trips to several other applications.
Jim Nix is an Austin-based traveler, photographer and wanderlust sufferer. He specializes in “high dynamic range” photography, also known as HDR. He is inspired by travel and enjoys creating dramatic and expressive photos that represent the places he discovers.
In this interview, Jim and I connect in a Google+ Hangout to discuss his workflow using MacPhun’s new Aurora HDR software. Jim shares his screen to demonstrate his workflow ,and also reveals how he uses the software as his default image editor — in place of the outstanding tools already present in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

    TWiP 477: Embrace & Extend

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So by that measure, Instagram is throwing flattery all over SnapChat these days. Instagram, a leader in social photo sharing, has pretty much copied SnapChats “stories” feature. But does it matter? Facebook has unsuccessfully attempted to acquire SnapChat several times, is this new “saveas style” product development tactic the Internet giants way of “acquiring” SnapChat without spending a dime?
Also, a photographer is suing stock image giant Getty Images for ONE BILLION DOLLARS. After receiving a threatening copyright infringement accusation from the company about one of her OWN photos.

  • TheFIX 078: Black & White with Tonality Pro
Macphun Tonality Pro Black & White Processing with Dan Hughes
On this episode of TheFIX, photographer and photo educator Dan Hughes joins us to talk about processing black & white images using the Macphun Tonality Pro plug-in for Lightroom and Photoshop. Tonality is available for the Mac OS as a stand-alone plug-in or app, or as part of Macphun’s Creative Kit suite of six photo editing apps, and it provides an excellent interface and toolkit for crafting black & white interpretations from your photographs. In his demo, Dan shows how to use the layers feature to customize the initial black & white conversion, and also how layer masks work so that adjustments can be applied with great precision to specific areas of the image. With the use of Smart Objects in Photoshop, Dan also shows how the edits you apply with Tonality can be flexible and editable just like standard Photoshop adjustment layers.
    About This Week’s Guest
Dan Hughes resides in the great little city of Rochester NY where he teaches photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology 10 months a year. The rest of the year he focuses on honing his own craft and helping anyone in need that he possibly can. Two of his favorite quotes are “If you think you can or if you think you can’t, you’re probably right” –Henry Ford,  and “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” – Robert Frost.
