TWiP Apps 07: Fripito-ing Around the World
Do you like to travel? Of course you do. Do you like to take pictures when you travel? Of course you do! Do you spend the time before you go to research the best locations for photos, what equipment you should or shouldn’t bring, plan how long it’ll take between locations to maximize your opportunities on the ground, and just ensure you won’t miss anything epic while there? Of course you… oh. No? I know… me neither. Research takes time! And there’s only so much googling you can do before you become inundated with options… and just give up. You say to yourself, “I’ll figure it out when I get there”. Then invariably, you find out once back home that you missed opportunities and locations, and brought gear you didn’t need or worse, left gear at home that you wish you hadn’t. The solution to all this — is Fripito. Fripito is a photographer’s guide to some of the world’s most photogenic locations. A powerful iOS and Android app that lets you not only enjoy beautiful images from around the world, but also to see exactly where they were taken, read a description of the scene, and even learn the camera settings. These collections aren’t random photos pulled from google or even just carefully curated photos from hundreds of photographers. No, each of Fripito’s cities are shot by a single photographer, selected among many candidates who can best represent the city of choice. And there’s more good news. You — can become one of those photographers. Fripito has a generous revenue share plan for a few talented photographers who can contribute new cities to their app. Maybe one of them… could be you!

  • TWiP Family 57: World’s Best Father – Dave Engledow

Father’s Day is Sunday and who better to celebrate fatherhood here on TWiP Family than the World’s Best Father, Dave Engledow. Dave started creating his humorous images about being a father when his daughter, Alice Bee, was a little baby and he was exhausted.
Dave made his first photos and shared them with friends and family online. He wanted to make them laugh, of course, but also to keep his friends who were not parents from getting bored with a constant stream of “Look at my adorable baby!” photos. Dave’s photos quickly found a wide audience and he created a calendar and then a book from the series.
In today’s interview with Dave Engledow, we talk about the process he goes through from idea to finished product. We also talk about what he’s working on now.
More about Dave: Facebook, Confessions of the World’s Best Father, 2017 World’s Best Father Calendar.

  • TheFIX 070: Lightroom CC – Guided Upright

Lightroom CC 2015.6 Update: Exploring the Guided Upright Feature
This week on TheFIX, host Seán Duggan covers the recent 2015.6/6.6 update to Lightroom and takes you through the new Guided Upright feature for correcting perspective distortion (this feature is only available in Lightroom CC). In a multi-image exploration of Guided Upright, Seán explores how it works on different photos, including situations where it doesn’t do much better than the regular Auto, Vertical, or Full options we’ve had up to now. He also shows one image where the previous Upright options were total failures, but where Guided Upright now saves the day. And, in the spirit of tinkering and pushing things to the edge, he also takes it for a test drive around the intentional distortions track to see what kind of cool distortions he can discover. Guided Upright is also available in the latest version of Camera Raw, too, and we’ll take a look at that in next week’s episode.

The first image below is one of the demo files I used to explore Guided Upright. After correcting the perspective distortion, I got the idea to turn it into the poster frame for this episode and customize the marquee. One thing led to another, which led to another, and after a while, this is what I ended up with!

  • Canon EOS 80D Review

The Canon EOS 80D comes three years after the popular 70D, one of the company’s most popular APS-C mid-range cameras. Among a crowded market of 24MP APS-C bodies, the 80D stands out for its video and Live View capabilities. Positioned between three-digit Rebel line and the semi-pro 7D II, the 80D features Canon’s Dual-Pixel 45-point autofocus technology, 1080p/60 video, 7fps, a fully articulating touch-sensitive LCD screen and headphone and external mic inputs. Accompanying the camera at launch is a new, quieter EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, an upgrade from the STM version.
In addition to reviewing the Canon 80D, Gordon and Doug cover the new PZ-E1 power-zoom adaptor, get into a deeper discussion of Live View versus mirrorless cameras and consider the 80D in the context of its competitors, particularly the 7D II and Nikon’s D7200.

  • TWiP 468 – Ghost in the Machine

TWiP 468: Ghost in the Machine
One of the main purposes of technology is to make our lives better, by taking over mundane tasks so that we can – theoretically – be more productive in other areas. Over the past several years we’ve seen advances in facial recognition and machine learning that have been steadily making inroads into consumer software. Apple added “Faces” to Apple Photos, Google added similar, albeit much deeper cloud-based photo recognition to its consumer photography product. But is all of this a pandora’s box inside of a trojan horse?
In this episode, we discuss the good aspects of machine learning and photo recognition technologies. As well as the scary parts of having faceless servers analyzing, and potentially making behavior inferences based on the mountains of data gathered about our daily lives.

  • TWiP Talks 47: 360 Photography and VR with Marc Charette

In this episode of TWiP Talks, it’s all about 360 photography… and as we learned in this session the proper term for this is actually “photosphere”, at least according to Google!
This technique and genre of photography is essentially the art of creating immersive experiences in photographs by capturing the entire environment, then by using some magic software, the photographer stitches it all together to create the final “sphere”. It is this sphere that the view then experiences from the INSIDE.
You may have experienced this type of photo before, especially if you’ve ever seen a QuickTime VR movie, or have used Google StreetView. All of these are essentially photospheres. There are some fantastic uses for this technology, but as with any technique, it takes some practice and mastery of basic (and some advanced) photography skills to pull off a professional-looking final piece.
Marc Charette has created hundreds of photospheres, and is also a Google StreetView Trusted photographer in his local area. Find out how he does it by watching this interview, then explore the links he’s provided below.
About Marc – in his own words…
As a Google Trusted photographer living on the Central Coast of New South Wales, my focus is on taking pictures of workplaces, people at work and the products and services they provide, mostly in 360° photospheres. With an extensive background sales, marketing, tourism, advertising, retail, training and services industry, I have have always found myself being the guy behind the gear, helping others tell their stories.
Going back to my first camera, a 1950’s Airies range finder to today, photography has always been in my life. With the new push towards 360° images and all things that look and feel VR, it was the right time to make the full time move and setup Work Pics. It’s about asking people… “So… what do you want people to see?”

  • TheFIX 069: Backup Strategies with Jim Goldstein

    Backup Strategies with Jim Goldstein
In this episode of TheFIX, photographer Jim Goldstein joins host Seán Duggan for a conversation about chasing moonbows in Yosemite and backup strategies for keeping your images safe from hard drive failure or other catastrophes. This is a bit different than our normal post-processing fare, but it does deal with things we do with our images after the shoot. And ensuring that you have a good backup strategy is arguably one of the most important things you can do with your photos after you download them to your computer. Hards drives can and do fail. Preparing for this will save you a lot of tech heartache and hassle. In addition to being an experienced nature, landscape and travel photographer, Jim is also the marketing director for the online backup service Backblaze, and he definitely has his act together in terms of having a very solid backup strategy. We talk about his back-up system which includes mirrored hard drives as well as online backups, and he shares some news about the new Backblaze B2 backup service for large amounts of data that is currently in public beta. At one point, we also do fierce podcasting battle with the audio scourge of an invading leafblower.
    Rocky Nook Book Giveaway
To enter to win a Rocky Nook book of your choice, just leave a comment below and tell us a bit about your backup strategy, what backup software you use, or perhaps a data loss horror story. Please be sure that you register with DISQUS, our commenting service, and do so with an active email address so we can contact you if you win. The entry period is two weeks. Entries for this giveaway will close at 11:59pm PST on Tuesday June 21, 2016.
