  • TWiP Family 56: Why You Should Have a Photo Blog with Simon Ringsmuth

My guest this week, Simon Ringsmuth, says everyone should have a photo blog. Really? Why? There are much easier ways to share photos online – Facebook and Instagram for starters.
Simon is father, photographer, teacher, contributor to Digital Photography School, and photo blog enthusiast. On this week’s episode, Simon tells us why photo blogs may seem like old news but are still a great way to share photos with friends and family, as well as a great way to have meaningful interaction with the people enjoying your photography.
Simon has been interested in blogging for years. For the last four years, he’s had a photo blog, Weekly Fifty. Every week, he shares a photo he took with his 50mm lens. Our conversation comes out of an article he wrote for Digital Photography School about how to start a successful photo blog.
Simon tells us first and foremost, know why you are starting the blog. You need a clear purpose that you communicate with your readers. Once you know why you are doing it, do it. Post consistently. Decide how often you’ll post and stick with the schedule. That way, the people who enjoy your work know when to expect a new post. And finally, know what is success for you.
After we talk why you should have a photo blog, we talk about some of the ways to have one. What platform is right for you? WordPress? Squarespace? There are lots of choices.
While blogs seem like dinosaurs in the world of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Periscope and all the many new forms of connecting online, Simon insists that they’re still worth your time.

Simon and I talked about my family’s current obsession with another dinosaur – letter writing. If you are the letter writing type, grab a paper and pen and write me a letter. Send it to PO Box 81005, Pittsburgh PA, 15217, USA.

AlphaMirrorless 014: Miguel Quiles gives us a primer on using flash with Alpha Mirrorless cameras
We have had so many listeners ask us about using flash units with the Sony Alpha system so we went out and found someone who relies on flash photography with the Sony Alpha system for a living who could talk more authoritatively about using flash units with the Sony Alpha system. Juan and Andy got the chance to interview Sony Artisan of Imagery Miguel Quiles about his work and about using flash. We cover a bit of the technical issues and options plus Miguel also shares his knowledge and his approach to his portrait work.

  • TWiP 467 – The Joy of Failure

TWiP 467: The Joy of Failure

Whether it be celebrities, athletes, politicians, or your neighbor with the hot car — we typically only see the side of people that they want us to see, their successes. When in reality, the reason many successful people seem to “have it all” is because they have failed more than anyone else. But the distinguishing factor is that after each failure, they learn from it, and try again… and again… and again. Unsuccessful people tend to give up, when many times success is just around the corner. In this episode Dave Dugdale and Ibarionex Perello join me to discuss the joy of failure, and they provide some tips on how you can be more effective as a photographer, and as a human.

  • Street Focus 89: Q&A and Street Challenge

Street Focus 89: Q&A and Street Challenge
This week on Street Focus, my guest co-host is Susan Rosenberg Jones. Together we answer questions about promoting your street photography, how to put together a portfolio and more. Special thanks to Rob Wareham, Yuri Rasin, Bud James and Michael Schmitt for submitting your questions.
About my guest co-host, Susan Rosenberg Jones:
Susan Rosenberg Jones was born and raised in Boston, and moved to New York City in 1976. She holds a BS in Education from Lesley College.  As a post grad, she enrolled in SVA as an undergrad (at the time, they did not offer an MFA program) and studied photography for two years.
In 1978, Susan began working at a lab in Manhattan as a custom black and white printer. She loved that job but quit when she became pregnant for fear of the chemicals. A few years later, she started working as a photo researcher for a stock photo agency, and began a long career in stock photography, licensing images to various publishing and advertising clients.
During her daughter’s growing up years, Susan photographed regularly, shooting chromes in those days because it was most convenient.
In 2008, Susan’s husband passed away after a long illness. She felt the need to photograph seriously again and purchased her first digital camera. Feeling rusty, she took a course at ICP just to re-connect with the camera controls and practice with editing software. Other Continuing Ed classes followed.
She worked on various portrait projects: women of a certain age, couples who’d been together for many years, and in 2011 began work on Building 1, a series about her neighbors in the apartment complex in Tribeca where she’d lived since 1984.
In 2012 she married her second husband, Joel. As a tangent to her photographs of her neighbors, she began shooting in her own home, and Joel was a willing subject. He was a bit skittish at first but he became more comfortable as she kept photographing. From this practice, Susan’s body of work, titled Second Time Around emerged.
Susan explores her feelings about growing older, family and community connections, through photography
She was on the show 2 years ago for episode 10. See more of her work on her website.

DxO has just released a major update to DxO Optics Pro, now at version 11, and in today’s show we’ll get a close-up look at what’s new and improved in this release, as well as talk about workflow and integration between Optics Pro and Lightroom, or whichever digital asset manager you use.

If you enjoy camera phone photography, creative app processing, and the entire realm of mobile creativity on phone and tablet devices, this is a show for you!
