While in Baltimore at the IAFC Conference we got to catch up with Dr. Mike Logan to discuss a few techniques he and his colleagues are playing with on destroying TATP. A group in our jurisdiction utilising expertise across the Police, Fire and other specialists have been working through the problem of dealing with organic peroxides and other homemade explosive type materials found in operational settings. The aim is to safely expand our tool box to identify, handle and destroy these materials in operational environments. We always need to make sure we have strong arrangements that are practised and access to the appropriate subject matter expertise before we deal with these types of materials.  Today we are focusing on describing an approach to destroy organic peroxides such as TATP by directly aspirating the solution into a propane flame so that it is combusted immediately and completely. There are no waste products.
