Three Big Things - 10/23

Listen Later

1. A shocking NBA gambling scandal. Dozens of people, including current and former NBA players and coaches, have been arrested in connection with a dual sports betting scheme, and "poker" fraud scheme. Damon Jones, who had two quick stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, is among the defendants. So is Portland Trail Blazers Coach Chauncey Billups and current Heat guard Terry Rozier. The Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York says the defendants would lure victims into rigged poker games for a chance to play with sports celebrities. Investigators say the operations were supported by Mafia crime families. Victims lost tens of millions of dollars. This went down over a two-year period starting in 2022. Investigators say the sports betting scheme involved NBA insiders. They got exclusive information about players that wasn't made public yet in order to place their bets. This includes when specific players would be sitting out future games or when they would pull themselves due to an injury or illness.
2. A constant stream of dump trucks are rolling into the White House grounds today as demolition of the east wing continues. The White House is 55,000 square feet. The ballroom is expected to be 90,000 square feet. Trump now says the cost of adding a massive ballroom to the White House has jumped to about 300 million dollars, up from the 250 million he originally estimated. Trump says the money will all still come from donations, though he says he may use the 230 million dollars he's demanding from the Justice Department over the federal investigations he's faced. The National Trust for Historic Preservation called for an immediate pause on construction until a legally required public review process can be completed.
3. Cybertruck recall. Tens of thousands of Tesla Cybertrucks are being recalled because onboard software could inadvertently increase the intensity of the front parking lights. That would make their headlights brighter than federal standards allow. This isn't the first time this year Cybertrucks have been recalled. In March, federal safety regulators recalled more than 46 thousand of the futuristic-looking vehicles warning that an exterior panel that runs along the side of the windshield can detach while driving.
