Tesla Buys $1.5 Billion in Bitcoin

Tesla Inc. said Monday that it bought $1.5 billion in bitcoin, the electric-vehicle company also said it expects to start accepting bitcoin as payment for its products soon. Bitcoin prices jumped more than 10% after the announcement.

Tesla disclosed its bitcoin purchase in its latest annual report, saying the move aims to “diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity.” Tesla said a board committee had approved changes to company rules on investments, adding that it can also invest cash in gold bullion and gold exchange-traded funds among other assets. The bitcoin purchase, likely among the largest by a public company, comes after a rally in 2020 when the price more than quadrupled. Tesla is joining a handful of other companies that have disclosed bitcoin holdings.

  • Thriller Insights: BlackRock Enters The Bitcoin Market

News reported from Danny Nelson via CoinDesk

    A dipping of toes…

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager with $7.81 trillion under management, appears to have granted at least two of its funds the ability to invest in bitcoin futures.

Prospectus documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Wednesday indicate that BlackRock Global Allocation Fund Inc. and BlackRock Funds V are at least eyeing bitcoin. They both include the world’s oldest cryptocurrency on their lists of derivative products cleared for use.

BlackRock did not state which commodity exchange it will choose to execute these crypto futures buys. However, the funds may only invest in cash-settled bitcoin futures. CME is the only exchange registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that offers similar futures products at this time. The filings warn that investments in these futures could carry illiquidity risks due to the “relatively new” market. Regulatory changes, volatility and valuation risks could similarly weigh on the price and thus “adversely impact a Fund.”

The filings appear to mark BlackRock’s entrance into the bitcoin market.

Before Wednesday, the investments giant has never so much as mentioned “bitcoin” in any of its regulatory filings. But that appears to be changing: “Certain Funds may engage in futures contracts based on bitcoin,” the prospectus documents state.

How Serious am I about 75K?

    News gathered from CoinDesk

Bitcoin is at it again. Last month, the price of the virtual currency quietly breached a new all-time high, cruising well past its prior peak of $19K set in 2017, and has been hovering around $36K at the time of writing. This follows a nearly 90% decline from those previous highs early in late 2018. This Year we have only fallen 20%. In 2013 Bitcoin moved from $240 to $410 in one week, in 2017 moved from $2400 to 4100 in one week and did same thing in 2020 moving from $24000 to 41000 in one week.

Well Quite Frankly these things are bullish for Bitcoin until the next halving.

Institutional buyers and wealthy individuals are still buying Bitcoin Grayscale had its biggest purchase day on the 15th this Month at 700 Million.

Speaking at an online event hosted by Princeton University in New Jersey, Jerome Powell said, “We don’t feel an urge or need to be first” on CDBCs. “Effectively,” Powell continued, “we already have a first-mover advantage because [the U.S. dollar is] the reserve currency.”

Powell estimated it will take “years rather than months” before the Fed releases a CBDC, despite early studies of digital dollar–friendly blockchains at the central bank’s Boston outpost.
