2014 has been an interesting year not only for us here on The Koalition and Throwdown but for the wider geek world. Since this is the final episode of Throwdown in 2014, we decided to look back on the year that was.

We begin the show by talking about the top three Gaming, Tech, and Pop Culture news items of the year. There was no single gaming event bigger than GamerGate so it automatically gets the highlight treatment as biggest gaming story. The comet landing was probably the most important news story of the decade since it puts us one step closer to claiming our rightful place among the stars. Finally, we talk about the biggest Pop Culture news story which was the Marvel Studios movie slate press event. An event so monumental that we had to do an impromptu Throwdown special edition episode for it.

The bulk of this podcast isn’t dedicated to news however. To make things really special, we run down our individual top three favorite video games and movies from 2014. If you’re a regular viewer/listener of Throwdown then you can probably guess what some of us are going to pick but now you can all see exactly what we thought was the best of the best from this past year.

We want to thank everyone who has supported Throwdown in the past, present, and future. We do this podcast and Throwdown Your Questions for all of you and we’re grateful that you continue to show us love by tuning into this crazy show of ours each week. Warners Bros. has just released the final part of The Hobbit trilogy. Like The Lord of the Rings trilogy before it, these films end with one massive war where everything is on the line not just for the main characters but for Middle-Earth itself. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies certainly lives up to its name and delivers one of the biggest on-screen battles ever seen.

We go in-depth about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and also talk about how it did things differently from the book. We talk about the various plot points and of course all of the over-the-top action on display. As usual, we reference the hell out of video games (we can't forsake our pedigree) but with the sort of stuff seen on screen, the comparisons are warranted.

The past week has seen many big events and announcements happen back to back in the gaming industry. The Game Awards and PlayStation Experience featured many big reveals which, quite frankly, set many gamers to go completely insane. Just a perusal of the comments section of any of our big stories this week is evidence enough that gamers were ready to battle. But why? From reveals, exclusivity deals, and the ages long console war, we break down all of the things that caused gamers to lose their minds just before year’s end.

We also have some gaming news as always. Something we forgot to mention on Throwdown Your Questions Ep. 14 was how Hideo Kojima and Naughty Dog were denied entry into The Game Awards’ after party because they weren’t properly dressed. How could people of such prominence in the industry be denied from a party associated with the industry’s (supposed) biggest award ceremony? This leads into a conversation about The Last of Us‘ latest DLC which gives the game new kill animations… for 99 cents each. Are things getting even more out of hand with DLC?

On the non-paid DLC front we talk about DRIVECLUB and how it has been radically changed due to the inclusion of dynamic weather. We’ve given this game flak for it’s online not working for weeks and the exclusion of the aforementioned weather but this addition really does make a huge different for the title. If you guys ever wanted to see your humble host eat crow then you’re in for a treat. Finally, we talk about the latest update on The Last Guardian and how the title is possibly coming out for the PlayStation 4.

Pop Culture land was pretty tame as well but some interesting bits managed to come up. All comic book related of course. We talk about Marvel’s Star Wars #1 selling over 1 million copies. This is something that hasn’t been seen in the comics industry for nearly 20 years so that is a feat in and of itself. We also talk about how Stargate SG-1 and Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa has signed up to play Aquaman in four movies. We delve into how his version of the infamous aquatic Justice Leaguer can work on screen. We end things off with our thoughts about how Marvel and Sony were in talks to have Spider-Man appear in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

We don't usually have special episodes of Throwdown Your Questions but this one kind of is since most of our questions are concerned with the two big events which happened over the weekend. The fans wanted to know our thoughts on The Game Awards and PlayStation Experience and we are more than happy to let give them.

The first hour of this podcast is us giving our thoughts on the two shows. Some of us (including myself) have some very strong opinions on the programs and things got a bit heated with many curses sent flying. We also broke down all that transpired with emphasis on the Uncharted 4 gameplay trailer, Street Fighter V being a PS4 console exclusive, and how Square-Enix trolled everyone with the Final Fantasy VII announcement.

Of course we did answer questions pertaining to the show and some of them are:

*Which is a bigger exclusive deal: Rise of the Tomb Raider or Street Fighter V

*What can Microsoft to do gain a lead on Sony?

*Was The Last Guardian cancelled or is Sony waiting to unveil it at E3?

There wasn't a singular monumental thing that happened in the world of gaming, tech, or pop culture for us to dig super deep into this week so we decided to do an all-news episode of Throwdown. This is essentially an old-school type episode of this podcast... minus the questions of course.

For gaming news we talk about how certain Australian retail stores are no longer selling Grand Theft Auto V, how the Xbox One supposedly outsold the PlayStation 4 during Black Friday, the Assassin's Creed Victory leak, and the possibility of Marvel and Star Wars characters appearing in Kingdom Hearts 3.

On the Pop Culture side of things we discuss whether or not Luke Skywalker's original lightsaber will play a crucial role in The Force Awakens, how AMC spoiled The Walking Dead for millions of viewers, the Suicide Squad cast reveal, and the official synopsis of the Fantastic Four movie.
