February 10, 2020 Podcast: Untitled Notre Dame USC Football Podcast – Episode 5.20 National Signing Day
It’s our first podcast of 2020, and we need to catch everyone up on what happened with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans during our hiatus. We start with Notre Dame and their new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Some Fighting Irish faithful feel Rees is too young and doesn’t have enough experience, but he does have the element of surprise with a roster full of returning players. National signing day was uneventful for Notre Dame, however one recruit was lost due to some unexpected circumstances. When it comes to USC and recruiting the fan base is still full of anger over the Trojans poor showing in the recruiting rankings. To add insult to injury national media are constantly highlighting how poor this recruiting class is relative to USC’s usual results. The Trojans also hired to new coaches, defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and special teams coach Sean Snyder.

The End of the football season is sadly here, and the Notre
Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans are heading in different directions.
Notre Dame was victorious in their bowl game against Iowa State. The Fighting Irish
looked dominate during the win, and are heading into 2020 on a high note. As
for USC, they looked terrible in their bowl loss to Iowa. It was more of the
same for the Trojans ending their up and down 2019 season. After the game USC
fired some coaches, but based on recent history they will make the wrong decision
regardless of who they hire. The podcast also goes off the rails a bit, when we
discuss Rookie of the Year and Little Big League.

The regular season may be over but we are back. The Notre
Dame Fighting Irish and the USC Trojans locked in some recruits in the early
signing period and are getting ready for their respective bowl games. We start
with the Trojans who are a disaster on the recruiting circuit. Retaining coach
Clay Helton did nothing to help recruiting and fans are not happy. Hopefully
this coaching stability can help the Trojans in their bowl game against Iowa.
On the other hand, Notre Dame signed a very impressive recruiting class from
all over the nation. This solid recruiting class was achieved in spite of
departure of Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Chip Long. As Notre Dame
heads into their bowl game with Iowa State it is unclear who will be calling
plays, and it could be former Fighting Irish quarterback Tommy Rees.

Notre Dame’s coach and his future. We also do some light recruiting talk. The Notre
Dame portion of the podcast is just an appetizer for the ongoing Clay Helton
saga at USC. Rumors are swirling that Clay Helton will remain the Trojans’
coach or that he will be fired. No one knows what to believe and the whole
situation as everyone frustrated.

Another set of big wins for the USC Trojans and the Notre
Dame Fighting Irish, but off the field stories have both our attentions this
week. USC beat cross town rival UCLA on Saturday, and freshman phenom Kedon
Slovis broke the Trojan single game passing yard record. The victory bell may
be back at USC, but all anyone is talking about is will Clay Helton Keep his
job. We make the case first for why he should continue as the Trojans coach and
then why he should be fired. Over in South Bend Notre Dame made easy work of
Boston College. For the fans, the game was the least important Fighting Irish
football show on television, and all eyes were on the Notre Dame Fan Feed simulcast
on the NBC Sports network featuring Darius Walker, Daelin Hayes and internet
favorite Jessica Smetana. It seemed like a big hit, and brought all the problems
with NBC’s broadcast, again.

Blowout victories for the USC Trojans and the Notre Dame
Fighting Irish have everyone in a good mood. We start with Notre Dame’s 32
point victory over Navy. The Midshipmen came into Notre Dame Stadium ranked,
but things got out of hand early. Everything went right for the Fighting Irish on
Saturday. Big plays on offense and defense have spirits high in South Bend. We
also get two stories from Greg’s football playing days. For the Trojans it’s
another fun offensive performance for Kedon Slovis and the USC offense.
Confidence it at a season high with the final game against cross town rival
UCLA coming up. We also talk about targeting
and the problems with replay.

It was a good weekend for the podcast, with both the USC
Trojans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish securing victories. We start the episode with everyone’s favorite
thing, parent talk and how our children affect the viewing experience. When we
get to the games, we lead with the Trojans and their nail biter against the
Arizona State Sun Devils. USC jumped out to a big early lead then fell flat for
the rest of the game. Even thought the Trojans won, this performance reflects
the current culture at USC and the Clay Helton era in general. Things were a
lot easier for the Fighting Irish and they easily handled the Duke Blue Devils.
Even in victory the Notre Dame fanbase is not happy and can always find reasons
to complain.

For all intents and purposes the season is over for both the
USC Trojans and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tonight’s USC loss to the Oregon
Ducks was so important we felt another Saturday night podcast was in order. Not
only were the Trojans’ hoped of winning the PAC-12 South crushed tonight, but
this loss means Clay Helton’s tenure as the USC head coach is most likely over.
In addition to USC head coach speculation we talk about more terrible PAC-12 officiating,
Kedon Slovis, Trojan injuries and their impact on play calling and more destiny
talk. It’s not all Trojans tonight because Notre Dame had to fight to pull out
a very late 4th quarter comeback against Virginia Tech. For some
Irish fans winning isn’t enough and players need to be held to the Notre Dame
Standard, whatever that is. We also talk about how clutch Chase Claypool is,
the incredible hold on the game winning extra point, and of course Kyle
Hamilton.

The USC Trojans has big fourth quarter comeback victory on
Friday, but everyone’s attention is focused on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s
crushing blowout defeat to the Michigan Wolverines. Emotions were running so
high we had to record the podcast right after the game Saturday night. Things
did not go well for the Irish. The Ann Arbor rain rendered the Notre Dame
offense was incompetent against Michigan’s defense. Irish quarterback Ian Book
was unable to do anything, and in a change from everything we’ve seen so far
this season the Notre Dame defense no showed against the Wolverines. We also
take stock of who has played well this season for the Fighting Irish and what
to expect for the rest of the season. To change the mood on the podcast we
shift our focus to USC’s victory at Colorado. True freshman Kedon Slovis looked
like a star leading a fourth quarter comeback for the Trojans. Clay Helton was
able to get a big road victory keeping dreams of a PAC-12 South title alive. We
can’t stay completely positive and do gripe about USC wasting their three star
receivers.

The USC Trojans were victorious and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are coming off a bye week preparing for the Michigan Wolverines. It was homecoming over the weekend and USC dismantled the Arizona Wildcats. The game was fairly uneventful, except for all the injuries the Trojans suffered. As USC prepares for the Colorado Buffalo this Friday we go over who is still hurt and what to expect. Also, Michael’s annual reminder of the definition of the word destiny takes place this week. When we shift our attention to Notre Dame, Greg bristles with some opinions he has heard on other podcasts, and tells the story of the 2011 Michigan game. We then assess the Fighting Irish’s chances of victory this Sunday in the Big House, and what we could see from Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.
