  • Poem: Venom
In this Tiny Awakening, I share a spoken word poem I wrote back in 2019. For those who don’t know I won a writing competition about the historical/biological evolution of humans as we migrated outside of Africa (The Original Journeys of Humanity) in 2013. Really this is just the spoken word “I’m an activist now” version of that original essay.

  • Ubuntu (I am because You Are)
In this Tiny Awakening, I am reintroduced to the African Humanistic Philosophy of Ubuntu. Reminiscing about the time I spent in Peace Education at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Kigali, Rwanda. Ubumuntu or Ubuntu is an expression of our shared humanity, actively expressed through empathy and care for other people.

    • Book Recommendation: “Ishmael” (1992) by Daniel Quinn ~ not about the genocide or ubuntu but rather the modern cultural biases that drives humanity to individualism

  • Ep 1. Internalized Racism / Implicit Bias (feat. Dr. Clarence Spicer)
In this episode, I talk with Dr. Clarence V. Spicer - a Social Psychologist, father and professor. We dig into concepts like explicit and implicit bias, internalized racism, Jim Crew, desegregation, the “one drop role” and how we have managed to navigate racism. I HAD to speak with Dr. Spicer, as someone who grew up in Jim Crew, marched in the Civil Rights Movement and studied the Psychology of Prejudice & Discrimination… he is an expert on race. Listen to hear what it’s been like for two individuals - a Boomer & Gen Z from two extremely different backgrounds - to navigate racism.

  • It's Okay to Walk Away
In the Tiny Awakening, I take one in the chin. It’s been a challenge for me in the past to let go of relationships. Watch friends or intimate partners walk away is hard… but I’ve learned that it’s better to let go than continue to minimize myself or to make promises I’m not willing to keep.
