The Tipperary Festival of Science is set to take place next week as part of Science Week 2020 with virtual events being held for people of all all ages

The Tidy Towns competition will go ahead in 2021, after this year's event was cancelled due to Covid-19.

Rural and Community Development Minister, Heather Humphreys, confirmed the competition will return next year.

Phil O'Dwyer - Former Mayor of Berkley in Michigan from Holycross spoke to Fran on Tipp Today this morning on the day of the US Presidential election results.

Between 1899 and 1908, four inebriate reformatories or ‘homes’ were established in Ireland with the assorted purposes of treating, reforming or punishing habitual and criminal adult drunkards. These institutions were the culmination of a century of reform attempts, legislation and temperance advocacy which still saw the drunkard retain the distinction as being one of the key disruptive forces in the prison system.

Yet, none of these institutions would last beyond the end of the First World War.

This month on Tipperary’s Hidden Histories, with the notion of ‘dry November’ in mind, we are going to take a look at the most punitive of these institutions and the impressively low number of inmates from Tipperary.
