Tom the Preacher

Is the Bible Good News, or Bad News? The truthful answer is, "It depends." The Bible contains lot's of good news, but also lots of potentially bad news.

The world teaches us to get, whereas Jesus taught us to give. True life isn't found until we "lose" our life for Jesus. While this might in some cases refer to physical death, for most of us, it is metaphorical.  So, what might it look like to lose your life for Jesus before finding true life?

Have you ever had someone unjustly attack you?
I'm not referring to a random act of violence, but perhaps a neighbor, co-worker, or fellow student who had it out for you. You may have felt physically threatened by them, or more likely, you were the victim of rumors, gossip, and slander that they spread about you. If so, you can take comfort in today's promise that God will be your protector. God will see to it that no weapon formed against you will stand, and no false accusation spoken against you will prevail.

Malachi uses incredibly beautiful language to convey one of God's great promises. Israel was an agrarian society in need of rain to grow their crops and protection from disease and pests that could destroy them. God promised this provision and protection if they would faithfully do just one thing: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse."

Did you know you don't HAVE to sin?
This might come as a shock to hear me say this. It might be even more shocking to realize it's not me saying this -- it's the writing of the Apostle Paul, and it comes right out of the Bible!

Memorial Day is a day to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us. But do you know what they thought they were sacrificing for? Was it only for "freedom," or was it for a higher, more specific cause?

Truth matters; Lying and deceiving people is wrong in so many ways. For years the American public, and the world, were being gaslit, and it is now being exposed. But there's one big thing missing.

A good night's sleep is a gift from God.  It's not a "necessary evil", laziness, or more spiritual to forgo sleep. We were created to need sleep, and a good night's sleep is a good thing. More than that, the Bible tells how to get a good night's sleep!

What's the most important thing a parent can do to ensure the success of their children?
Get them a college education? That's probably the answer of most people, and it's definitely the answer of the folks giving campus tours to prospective students. But it's not the answer I would give. Mine comes from today's promise that your children will be like olive plants around your table.
