Tom the Preacher

This past Sunday was Pentecost Sunday -- the day Christians remember and celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem 50 days after the resurrection of Christ. In our church, we sang a song with an oft-repeated line, "Holy Spirit, You are welcome here." What a beautiful thought, and what a beautiful thing it is to welcome the Holy Spirit. Are you welcoming Him?

The church has a lengthy history of conflicts with Jews. Does the New Testament teach this? What is one to make of verses that seem to highlight this conflict? With growing anti-semitism in our country, what should be our response if we want to be faithful to Jesus?

There is a growing wave of anit-semitism in America and other Western countries. But history tells us this is nothing new. It raises a question: what's behind this hate? And what should Christian's position be on it?

We saw earlier that the only way to leave the broad path and enter the narrow path is through Jesus. So now the question becomes, "What do we have to do, or does Jesus automatically put everyone on that path?"

Yesterday, we saw how the only way to get on the narrow path which leads to life is through Jesus Christ, whose death for our sins enables us to receive forgiveness and freedom from guilt, and whose shed blood cleanses us from all sin.
But the story doesn't end with Jesus hanging on the cross. Nor does it end with Him rising from the dead. What happened next was crucial to our ability to stay on the narrow path.

Jesus taught that we must choose between two paths in life. He lays a choice before us, carefully articulating the rewards and consequences of each path. Offering this choice to people has been the primary approach I've used in sharing the gospel in recent years. I call this The Two Paths Gospel Presentation. I think you would benefit from learning this presentation, so I will be developing it over the coming week.

One of the most common reasons people give for leaving Christianity is that the church is full of hypocrites.  Do these people have a point? And if so, should the church continue to allow hypocrites to attend? Furthermore, should a person who knows they aren't living up to the Christians standard come to church?
