Tom the Preacher

Meditation is a key discipline that helps get God's truth into our "innermost being" (Psalm 51:6). It means that we actively and intentionally engage with the Scripture as we seek to understand what it means and how we are to carefully put into practice what we learn. Do you know how to meditate on the Word? Have you been doing it?

It's my belief that many good Christians are defeated by sin and temptation because they know God's truth in their mind, but it has not yet reached their "innermost being." Put another way, they know the truth intellectually, and may very well believe it to be true, but the word of God hasn't found a place deep in their heart (i.e. their "innermost being").  Consequently, they know the right things to do, but down deep, it's not what they want to do.
There is a solution to this problem. Join me for Today's Daily Word & Prayer to learn more.

Can a proud person be saved?
I contend he can't, at least not unless he humbles himself.

It's so easy to be dragged down by the pain, darkness, and unbelief of the world. When that happens, we've been overcome by evil. But God calls us to overcome evil with good. What's that look like?

Sometimes one-liners stick with you. I still remember a simple, almost off-hand comment a speaker made over 40 years ago: "It's hard not to get along with a humble person."
I've had my share of conflicts through the years, and when I do, I try to step back and ask if the point of conflict is legitimate or if I'm just being proud.

The Bible is filled with people who did mighty exploits by the power of God.
David took down the giant, Moses led Israel through the Red Sea, Elijah called down fire from heaven, and Jesus and His apostles performed miracles of healing. It's obvious they couldn't have done these things without God.
But Jesus didn't say, "Apart from Me you can't do miracles." He said, "Apart from Me you can do nothing."

How would you answer if Paul asked you, "What do you have that you did not receive?" A proud person will answer one way and a humble person quite differently. Your answer matters, because God will pour out grace upon you if you are a humble person.
