Too Many Comics episodes

  • Episode 13: Chicks Dig Comics

This week, the boys realize even more how much they enjoy certain women in comics. Black Widow gets another mention, as does a host of others for Marvel's upcoming A-force (which we won't review as our #1 next week, but we'll most likely read anyways). Other awesome ladies: Ashley at Superhero Beach, the females of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Peggy Carter, Jane Foster, and Fiona Staples to name a few.

Not everything can be awesome, though, as the Super Girl preview fails to catch our interest. Afterwards, we review Injection #1 and The Mantle #1 in our weekly segment before touching on what else we've been picking up recently.

    Next week's #1 review:

    • Insufferable #1 (IDW) - What happens when your crime-fighting sidekick grows up to be an arrogant, ungrateful douchebag who makes Kanye look humble? Worse, what on Earth could force the two of you together for one last case? Nocturnus and his former protege, Galahad, will find out-if they don't kill one another first.

  • Episode 12: Black Widow Babies

This week, the boys spend a good amount of time talking about Avengers: Age of Ultron (spoilers included). Despite online commenter opinion, Too Many Comics loves Black Widow -- her roles in the many movies, her Nathan Edmondson/Phil Noto comic and her future endeavors.

We review Valiant's Dead Drop #1 and continue praise for Jeff Lemire's Descender. Also, Secret Wars remains a mystery, even after reading the Free Comic Book Day special and first issue.

Comics discussed: Dead Drop, Rocket Girl, Descender, Hip Hop Family Tree, Bob's Burgers, All New/All Different Avengers, The Big Con Job

    Next week's #1s:

    • Injection #1 (Image) - Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life. INJECTION is the new ongoing series created by the acclaimed creative team of Moon Knight. It is science fiction, tales of horror, strange crime fiction, techno-thriller, and ghost story all at the same time. A serialized sequence of graphic novels about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection.
    • Mantle #1 (Image) - Robbie never asked for any of this. While drunkenly walking home from a punk show, he's hit with lightning and wakes to find that he's been chosen as the new host for The Mantle, a power set of unimaginable scope. Despite his lack of interest, he's forced into action. The Plague, a being who has spent 50 years killing every previous host of The Mantle, is already coming for him.

  • Episode 11: Avengers Assemble

This week, the boys prep for an early showing of Avengers: Age of Ultron, while discussing the latest and greatest in comic book reading.

Topics covered include: a review of Pisces #1, another rapid fire review, the 2015 Eisner nominations, Lumberjanes, Bloodshot: Reborn, Batman & Robin and this weekend's Free Comic Book Day.

    Next week's review:

    • Dead Drop #1 (Valiant) - Four issues. Four stories. One ticking clock! Red-hot writer Ales Kot (Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier) and rising star Adam Gorham (Zero) start the countdown to DEAD DROP as an unlikely cast of superhuman operators fall in deep for an undercover conspiracy action thriller in the darkest corners of the Valiant Universe? There is a secret black market in New York. It is hidden in plain sight - in our streets, trains, restaurants. Those who know how to navigate it exchange secrets of extraordinary nature. But when the secret in circulation is a biological weapon derived from Vine technology, the gloves are off - and the most extraordinary agents are released to stop the disaster before it occurs. Otherwise, in less than thirty minutes, there will be no world to come back to. X-O Manowar, Archer, Neville Alcott, Detective Cejudo and Betamax are ready to save the world.

  • Episode 10: The Magic of Editing

This week, the boys (other than a quick mention of Daredevil at the beginning and Avengers at the end) spend roughly 30 minutes talking books.

Through three audio files pieced together, you'll hear about Chris's books, Beyond Belief, Rick Remender's Deadly Class, Divinity, Black Widow and quite a few of our other favorites. Secret Wars is also hated upon... again.

    Next week's first issue:

    • Pisces #1 (Image) - Former fighter pilot Dillon Carpenter found everything he wanted when he returned from the Vietnam War. A loving partner; a dream career training with NASA to travel through space; and soon, he will learn, a prime candidacy for a secret mission, one that will forever change the world: First Contact. But as Dillon prepares, his war trauma returns and he's haunted by dark visions of his future. There is but one constant; the voice whispering from the stars. A sci-fi psychological body horror series from the writer of RAT QUEENS and the artist of SHELTERED.

  • Episode 9: Afraid of Secret Wars

This week, the boys lament the fact that their pull lists were fairly minimal. To make up for it, we tap into some old-school discussions about the original Secret Wars, which Brooks read this past week. We then admit to being afraid of the upcoming Secret Wars with its seemingly limitless titles and hefty price tag to stay in the know.

In addition, we review Runlovekill #1, enjoy Netflix's Daredevil and talk movie news surrounding upcoming blockbusters.

    Next week's first issue:

    • Beyond Belief #1 (Image) - Based on the hit Nerdist podcast! It's time to send the little ones to dream land, and set your radio's dial to 'SPOOKY.' Steel yourself for mysterious suspense in...BEYOND BELIEF! Meet Frank and Sadie Doyle, toast of the upper crust! Headliners on the society pages. And oh yes...THEY SEE GHOSTS! Who cares what evil lurks in the hearts of men...unless evil's carrying the martini tray!

  • Episode 8: Convergence Craziness

This week, the boys dive head first into Convergence #1. Since we aren't fully up on DC's history, we give the publisher some tips as to how to draw in new readers. Also, we can't help but to continue loving Jeff Lemire's Descender.

Brooks read through his backlog of 25 comics, so we quickly run through a rapid-fire review of each. To finish, we decide we'll still wait through all the end credits for Age of Ultron, we'll most likely binge watch Daredevil before next week's episode, and please no Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff.

    Next week's #1:

    • Runlovekill #1 (Image) - Sought after by elements from her violent past, fugitive and assassin Rain Oshiro has just 24 hours to escape a barricaded city while trying to evade a military force determined to either capture or kill her.

    Other good reads:

    • Saga #27
    • Descender #2
    • All-New Hawkeye #2
    • Divinity #2
