    Eight Hours Was Not Enough
When I was 6 years old, my mother bought me a Nancy Drew Mystery Story. I was MIA until I finished it - in about three hours of steady reading. Like gobbling up an ice cream cone in two bites. It was the start of a lifelong addiction to reading. I can't imagine what I would have done if Audible had been around in those days with excellent readers like Deanna Hurst. I probably would not have eaten or slept. I would not have gone to school. I would have been absorbed into books, non-stop. They would have had to send me to a book detox center. Well, years later there is no more Nancy Drew or Beverly Grey but now there's Marcia Muller and her alter ego Sharon McCone. Not only have I read the entire series up to and including Locked In and Coming Back, I am sitting here waiting for Ms. Muller to write her next book and hoping it will be soon because I am having definite withdrawal symptoms. Her well balanced characters, her courage to allow Sharon to hire people who have, in traditional literature, been shunned or stereotyped and her excellent, complicated plots that take twists and turns without becoming either boring or illogical is what keeps me listening. The only complaint - hey, I want the books to be longer. Well, you can't have everything. Read it, you'll love it.
    Interesting focus
Where does Coming Back rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?
Coming Back was not the book I thought it would be, although it did tell the story.
I thought there were too many characters, too much jumping around. Perhaps this series is done?
Writing good, narrator not good on main character
I always have liked the Sharon McCone stories--but the narrator sounded so dull and like she was sleep-walking when doing Sharon. Hurst was pretty good with every other character. Other than that, it was a good story and I did not guess the end.

    Publisher's Summary:
Life on the ranchlands of Montana comes with more than its share of trouble. The unique people who live and work on this untamed stretch of today's American West expect it---and some of them even enjoy it. One of them is Mike Wire, a former homicide detective who once worked the decadent hills and valleys of Hollywood. Having enough of the violence of the big city, Mike has retreated to a far corner of civilization to spend his days running the Square C Ranch and pining for Jeanette Coulter, its spirited and iron-fisted owner. But Mike is soon to learn terrible things can happen beneath Montana's big skies, too. The badlands are home to more than just horses, cattle, cowboys, and laid-back rattlesnakes. Just beneath the surface are the bones of a dinosaur family that could make a fortune for whoever gets to them first. When a paleontologist and his attractive young assistants arrive at the Square C to dig, Mike senses trouble is clinging to them like Montana mud. Once discovered, those bones wont stay buried, and not everyone hunting for them is doing it in the interest of science. When a murderer begins to stalk the dinosaur hunting grounds, Mike has to combine the lessons he learned in Los Angeles with those of the Montana prairie to protect the people and the land he has come to love.

Like Craig Johnson? You'll like this, a good story
This is a nice story moving along nicely with only hints at the 0 to 60 mph in 1.2 seconds that kicks in at the end. The narrator makes this book a very pleasant listen. Another may have ruined the book, instead Michael Kramer paced the book to match the Montana summer.
I hope there is another story to come down Rancher's Row from Mr. Hickam.
    A fun ride
"The Dinosaur Hunter" is simply a sit-back-and-entertain-me, awesome story with the perfect narrator for the part. We are big Homer Hickam fans, and this is one of his best.
    Things just kind of happened
I was expecting more 'murder-mystery/ adventure / detective figures it out.' It just drifted and no one really figured it out. It was enjoyable but I'd like a more developed story. Lots of things to look forward to in future reads.
    Good Story,

    Publisher's Summary:
An irresistible treasure, two master thieves, and a secret as old as mankind....
Michael St. Pierre, a reformed master thief, thinks he has left his criminal days far behind him when he receives word that his best friend, Simon, has been locked up and sentenced to die in a brutal desert prison. Breaking into jail for the first time in his checkered career, Michael is stunned to discover that his new girlfriend, KC, is connected to Simons case.
With a madman on their heels, the three adventurers make their way to Istanbul in search of the mysterious artifact that landed Simon behind bars in the first place: a map containing the location of a holy place lost to the mists of time, a repository of knowledge and treasure predating Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
Testing their courage and wits, Michael and his team are forced to plot a series of daring thefts that take them inside some of the citys most celebrated (and heavily guarded) sanctums, from the imperial harem of Topkapi Palace to the tombs of the Hagia Sophia itself. More than priceless artifacts are at stake - the lives of loved ones and perhaps the fate of humanity itself hang in the balance.
A globe-trotting adventure that wings from the glittering banks of the Bosporus to the highest peaks of the Himalayas, The Thieves of Darkness confirms Richard Doetschs place as the modern-day master of pulse-pounding suspense.
    Critic Reviews:
"The plot offers an agreeable blend of heist drama and escape story. Knowledge from the previous St. Pierre adventures is not necessary, but readers will scramble to find them after finishing this masterpiece. Doetsch has earned his seat at the table with other A-list thriller writers." (Booklist)

    Dissapointing
Mr. Doescht isnot a very good writer and as such, he depends heavily on cliches to advance his plot. The most over-used is the oldest, otherwise known as the cowboy movie cliche. "Drop your gun, or I will kill her!" At this point, 100 ten year olds in the theater are screaming: "Don't drop the gun! If you do, he will kill both of you." Of course, this is obvious to the most mentally adled, but not to the hero. He drops the gun, and incredibly, the villain feels a need to express himself before shooting them, allowing the hero and heroine to escape. Mr. Doescht uses this tired cliche at least 5 times. He also uses the variation where the hero gets the drop on the villain, but instead of shooting him, he also feels the need to express himself, giving the heroine a chance to walk in to be captured and used as a hostage again. There are many other flaws including the man who finds the most evil place on earth and warns his friend: "Don't ever let anybody come here and open the door to this unspeakable evil. By the way, enclosed are the key to the door and a detailed map. Don't let anybody get them." PLEASEEEE! What ever happenned to "?? destroyed the key and burned the map." I realize that without these contrived situations, there would be no plot, but a better writer would have found a more credible premise. Get this book only if you are willing to suspend all brain activity and enjoy a yarn without thinking.
    Silly dialogue, silly emotions
Promising beginning, but very quickly bogs down with inane personal interactions and not believable egos and emotions. Could not even finish the first half of the book.

    Book 2 Great story!
Another Mercy Street Novel from a favorite author. I like that the people and their story carried through in this book from the first. I'm planning to buy more books from Mariah Stewart.
    Another winner!
I just can't get enough of Mariah Stewart's books. Her plotline, character development, dialogue, and pace are pitch perfect. Whatever shall I do when I've finished them all??
love and trust in each other
This story shows you what a private foundation can do with the help of it's own people who believe, love and trust in each other. I love Mercy Street Foundation, it's benefactor, and best friends. The investigators, the FBI, the priest, the housekeeper. personal secretary and Robert Magellan. They found his missing son and the man that destroyed peoples life. The book kept me on the edge of my chair waiting for what was around the next bend. I loved this series and the author.
    Five Stars
    These are always good!
    Excellent mystery
I thought this was a very good book. I've been following the mercy series and like every one of them. I like Mariah Stewarts' writing. It's easy to follow.
I liked Sam and thought he made a great addition to the Mercy Foundation ,but was a little disappointed at the end to find he was returning to work for the FBI. I was hoping he would choose to stay with the foundation group.
Two subjects were covered in the book. The story of Sam and the unsolved Walker murder and how he plays a big part in it, and also the the return of Robert Magellan's aon. Actually I'm hoping for a sequel concerning susanna, Robert's assistant. Both stories were covered in depth with all mysteries resolved at the end.

The United States has just launched the most powerful weapon in history - a missile-launching satellite called "Thor's Hammer" that can strike anywhere on the planet in seconds. The world's other major superpowers, Russia and China, are rocked by America's development, and they scramble to respond by gaining control of the seas.
But when terrorists hijack Pakistani missiles and fire them at Indian cities, U.S. President Joseph Gardner has only one option - to use the untested Thor's Hammer. But when something goes awry, Pakistan decides to give China naval strategic advantage by granting access to Middle Eastern ports.
To make matters worse, Somali pirates board a Chinese freighter and slaughter the crew. China responds by brutally attacking and then occupying Somalia, quickly setting up missile pads that can target U.S. Naval ships. Now the U.S. high command is on red alert and the country's security is in total jeopardy....

Will the world's superpowers be plunged into a full-scale war?

    Eh
Very slow and boring not sure what happened compared to the rest of his novels . Starting to regret I wasted a credit on the novel.
    Flawed
While listening to this novel; I couldn't help but wonder if the author had a vote on the narrator of his book. While this is an interesting enough book; I found Mr. Dufris's performance frequently grating. His performance of the female parts; especially the Secretary of State came off as a bad impression of the "Golden Girls" character Blanche Devereaux. I almost stopped listening to this book because of this character. Thankfully that character doesn't play a large part through out the book.
Mr. Dufris attempts to play different characters with different voices was flawed by an affectation in the way he pronounces the word missile. Mr. Dufris pronounces that word as "miss sile" it's very irritating to here all the characters in the book no matter what their nationality or sex saying that word in this highly affected way.
Another problem was other technical jargon in the book; the narrator apparently didn't do any homework to learn how to saw the names and never got a ships displacement correct. Instead of referring to a ships displacement as thousands of tons; he always would say "100,000 pound. Not a big deal I suppose; but for someone who makes a living this way, this was a sloppy job.
I will be careful to avoid books narrated by this performer in the future. My enjoyment of this book was adversely affected by Mr. Dufris.

    excellent
at the beginning of the audio book is a brief biography of eric ambler. i normally hate it when i cannot get right into a book, but this bio was informative and moving. the book is just about perfect, as far as small spy novels go. not that the main character ever wanted to be a spy...
i read this after one of those long classics that leave you half in one world and half in another. i could not find anything to listen to, but somehow this book fit my mood to perfection. the character is presented and ambler does not let go of him until the last minute. it is dated, of course, there are no computers or any other high tech appendanges, unless you count an old 35 mm of yesteryear slipping in and out of the narrative.
the mystery unravels and is satisfying; a very fun, well-written and well performed listen. i am downloading another ambler just now.
    Great Writing, Slow Plot
After reading the wonderful book, Uncommon Danger, by the same author, I immediately bought this one as well. This one is not nearly as engaging and thrilling. The writing is fine, but two thirds of the book is character development.
    A pre-WWII closed circle mystery
A pre-WWII closed circle mystery with all the major players (the US, Germany, France, Russia, Switzerland) represented in the Hotel de la Reserve's guest list. Not a bad novel, per se, but just not a great reluctant spy novel.
I'm not sure if it is just my luck, my laziness, or just a weird random coincidence, but I usually start reading great genre novelists with a mediocre piece. I will read more Ambler not because of this novel, but because I KNOW how my luck works with spy fiction. Next time, I will research his better pieces and start there.
As I listened with my Vintage Crime edition on my lap, reading along, I noticed that the audio version deviated many times from the Vintage Crime/Black Lizard edition. I'm not sure if the Audiobook version was dumb-ed down or what, but there were several times when words like Bolshevik were replaced with Communist, and lines were added for clarification. It was as if the audio-producers wanted to make sure that our hands were held through the entire book. Anyway, it was a little annoying, but still not bad.
Two for two with this author.
Looking forward to listening to all of Ambler's works. He has a way to make a book seem longer than it is (in a good way). The plot flows smoothly chapter to chapter. The characters are well done and complemented well with excellent narration. This book is also a sort of "who done it" type of book, so I would recommend that you listen carefully to the names of the cast of characters as they are presented in the book. It will help you enjoy the book in the later chapters.
    Epitaph For A Spy
David Holt did a great job of reading this story. I enjoyed the forward to the book as it gave more insight to Ambler and how he changed the spy genre. This book sort of gives you the idea how an ordinary person might react trying to find out who is the spy. Interesting story.

    An enjoyable Christmas mystery
This is a Christine Bennett mystery set at Christmastime. While the pace is a bit slow, this is quite enjoyable for the holiday season when I can appreciate a slightly slower pace. In this story Chris Bennett is tackling a mystery without her detective husband at her side. In addition, this case has a personal element for Chris as she is searching for a missing priest that she and sister Joseph care about. I recommend this mystery is better quality than some of the other Christmas novels available.

    Non-stop Suspense!
I LOVED this audiobook. This is not my genre but it caught my eye and I listened to it in one day! Didn't want to "use up" an audiobook in one day but I couldn't help it. As a young adult, I always enjoyed reading the short stories called "Drama in real life" in Readers Digest, and while this is fiction it reminded me of that memory. I am getting the prequel to this now. It didn't bother me not to have read the first one- I think it easily stands alone.
    Full of clich?'s
In this book men are silent, strong and capable. Woman are weepy and sentimental and asking all the time: What's happening? Or: What's going to happen now?
The dialogues are incredibly poor. Two stars for the parts about flying.
This book is not for any female who can think for herself.
