    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 29 mins

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
From the New York Times best-selling author comes a first novel as spellbinding as her acclaimed nonfiction.
At 34, Nick Walsh is a broken, deeply cynical man. Since the violent deaths of his parents 13 years earlier, he has been living alone in his childhood home in the suburban Midwest, drinking, drugging, and debauching himself into oblivion. A measure of solace is provided by his newly found relationship with Monica, a mysterious woman who seems to harbor as many secrets as he does.
Obsessed with understanding the circumstances surrounding his parents' deaths and deranged by his relentless sorrow, Nick begins a campaign of spying on his neighbors via hidden cameras and microphones he has covertly installed in their houses. As he observes with amusement and disbelief all the strange, sad, and terrifying things that his neighbors do to themselves and to one another, and as he, in turn, learns that he is being stalked, he begins to slowly unravel the shocking truth about how and why his parents died.
At once unsettling and moving, humorous and horrifying, Thy Neighbor explores the nature of grief, the potential isolation of suburban life, and who we really are when we think no one is watching. What readers and critics have admired in Norah Vincent's nonfiction is completely unleashed in this vivid and provocative novel.

    Disturbing
Would you try another book from Norah Vincent and/or Edoardo Ballerini?
Ballerini is one of my favorite narrators so I thought I would try this book. Publishers summary sounded interesting. The story is well written but is very disturbing, depressing and at times sickening. Not what I was looking for.
Did Edoardo Ballerini do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
    One of my favorites narrators!
What character would you cut from Thy Neighbor?
I don't think there is a like able character anywhere in the story.
STOP LOOKING... SPEND YOUR CREDIT ON THIS ONE!!!
    Any additional comments?
Ive listened to many, many books which I have wanted to comment on however, I am not a master of words and feel inadequate to write a substantial review. But then I listen to a book like this and I tell myself screw it, just write something, anything, to let viewers know they wont be wasting a credit by adding this to their library. Youve already read the publisher's summary so you know what it is about. That is only a scratch on the surface of what you are in for with this book. And besides, it is worth a credit to hear the performance of Edoardo Ballerini who really is one of the best narrators on audible.
    Save your credits.
I tried. I really did. I made it all the way through the first download before I threw in the towel. This story could have been written so much better. Hours of listening to a whiney, profane, self-centered young man excuse his own abberant behavior while blaming his parents for making him that way is just too much. Granted, he endured more than most in his young life but many people have faced as much and more and have been decent, caring, productive human beings in spite of, or because of, what they went through growing up. This is a re-write of an old story line which falls way short of adequate. Considering what he had to work with, the narrator did a good job. There, I found something positive to say.
    Incredible Performance, Disturbing Story
Incredible performance from Ballerini, hands down.

    Title: Saddled with Trouble

    Publisher's Summary:
A series of a different color: the first Horse Lover's mystery. Quarter horse trainer Michaela Bancroft's husband is divorcing her for a 22 year-old beauty. Stunned, Michaela is trying to rein in her life when she finds her Uncle Lou murdered. And when she's nearly run off the road, she suspects she's on the fast track to being the next victim.
    Members Reviews:
    Horses and intrigue
Michaela Bancroft is having a rough time. She's in the process of divorcing her husband, Brad Warren, after ten years of marriage. Brad's new fiancee, Kirsten, is actively harassing her to get her to sign the divorce papers instantly--without holding out for the thousands of dollars Brad owes for the medical bills insurance wouldn't cover in pursuit of a pregnancy they never achieved. Her wild friend Camden has moved in with her while waiting for the settlement on her divorce, too. And with all the bills, Michaela is running her horse ranch on minimal help.
And then her beloved Uncle Lou misses a breakfast with her that he had suggested. She goes to his ranch--and finds him in his prize stallion's stall, with a pitchfork through his back.
Soon Michaela is getting confusing signals from handsome police detective Jude Davis, as he seems sympathetic yet asks hard and upsetting questions, and learning unsettling things about everyone she cares about. Her father is gambling (and losing) again, Camden's new boyfriend has been pressuring Lou to sell his ranch, Lou's much-loved second wife, Cynthia, is pregnant despite the vasectomy Lou had several years ago. An especially upsetting and awkward discovery is that Lou was being sued by people who claimed they paid thousands for semen from his prize champion stallion, but received semen from some other, unknown stallion. What's especially disturbing is that they appear to have proof.
It's all complicated, alarming, and confusing for Michaela, and it gets even scarier when strange things start happening around her own ranch, and she gets run off the road by a big Ford truck.
I liked Michaela and her friends, and as complicated as the underlying plot behind her uncle's death gets, in the end it all hangs together and makes sense. A fun read, or listen.
Recommended for a good beach read.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Audible in exchange for an honest review.
    Decent Listen. Good mystery.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Narrator is good during prose, but accents are borderline offensive, especially impersonating someone with a disability/different nationality.
    Any additional comments?
Decent little mystery. Not a lot of actual horse-related issues in the plot.
liked the book, needs better narrator
What didnt you like about Suehyla El Attars performance?
She isn't good at male voices, very monotone. I would have enjoyed much more with a good narration.
    Ok but...
I really wanted to like this book. But there were too many things wrong. First, the story is set in California, but the lead character and her friend had southern accents. Second, two of the characters are from the Hawaiian islands and speak in a dialect that prevents them from speaking in correct sentences. Third, it is difficult to tell the difference between some of the voices that the narrator uses for the characters. Forth, the narrator's voice is annoying.

IMO a good story line encompassing fact and fiction. It was a great escape and better than watching a movie. Finally, I'm pretty sure no animals were harmed in the making of this audiobook.

great story featuring the unflappable Shake
Jeff Gurney is a great narrator and does a great job on this book. Unfortunately Edoardo Balerino's reading of the first Shake Bouchant mystery, Gutshot Straight, captured the main character so perfectly any substitute would look like Roger Moore to Sean Connery.
Nevertheless Whiplash River is good mystery featuring truly entertaining characters so well developed I felt like they were old friends. It is funny and plays like a great Elmore Leonard movie.
    Average, But 'Average' Ain't Bad
Look, the competition out there for successful mystery/adventure fiction is intense, right? I want a book that will entertain me at the gym, during a commute, and at chore time. Some of those books are terrible. Some are great. But most are average. That is they don't disappoint, deliver a good time, and entirely disappear from your memory quicker than a political speech.
Lou Berney's, "Whiplash River" is one of those. I'll probably buy more of his books especially if they're read by Jeff Gurner. There are worse ways to spend an hour grooming the lawn.
It's average, but average is a good thing on these competitive shelves.
    It's a Series! (I hope.)
I'm hoping this is second in a series, starting with 'Gutshot Straight'. I agree with a reviewer of 'Gutshot Straight' who said that Berney writes like a combination of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen. This second novel has the hero, Shake, caught up with other vividly drawn characters in a fast paced plot with lots of twists and turns. I found myself smiling and laughing aloud as I listened to the characters' responses to murder and mayhem. The third book can't come along soon enough for me.
    I couldn't finish this one.
I thought the first Shake Bouchon book, Gutshot Straight, was pretty good. The character is interesting. However, the second book verges on gibberish. There is an old guy named Quinn, who talks so much that you really want him to STFU. Shake has opened a restaurant in Belize, and is in debt to a humongous loan shark named Baby Jesus. The restaurant is shot up and explodes. There is a bad-guy couple, and an FBI lady who is a good guy. I enjoy almost anything that Edoardo Balerini reads, but even a good narrator can't do much for a mediocre book. Like putting lipstick on a pig, as someone said. I gave up about two thirds of the way through.

    Creepy Killer!
Wow! Interesting read. Enjoyable long listen that took me down surprising roads, some I am still travelling down in contemplation. Not much about the investegation, instead you are "in the head" of the criminal and detective and what drives of them.
    Loved this book
Would you listen to The Ladykiller again? Why?
Yes. I really liked this book. The story kept me wanting to know just what was going to happen next.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't really have a favourite, I enjoyed it all.
What does Annie Aldington bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Yes definitely. Annie is a great story teller & brings it to life.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It didn't make me cry, it did however have me looking behind me every five minutes whilst walking my dog haha..... no, really!!
    Dissapointing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, there is more sub plots than plot, and the side stories swamp the main story
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have liked to explore the murderer a bit more, and I was definitely uninterested in the detectives love life
Which scene did you most enjoy?
The opening scene was quite dark
Could you see The Ladykiller being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Wouldn't be interested in any film or programme myself
    Any additional comments?
We have a psychopathetic murderer on the loose, terrorising a small town, yet the book is all about the detectives relationship with a East End gangster and their sexual exploits
    Not for the easily offended
Would you listen to The Ladykiller again? Why?
Quite probably as I feel I might have missed some of the finer details - that said it is a story that bears a second read anyway.
What does Annie Aldington bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
An excellent narator, varied charactors each with their own little quirks - I always feel this adds much to the telling
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, this is a book to be enjoyed when you can relax and take it on board.
    Any additional comments?
Not for anyone offended by bad language - that said it is in context.
    Brilliant!
Captivating from the start, another brilliant Martina Cole novel. I'm so glad I discovered this impactful novelist. Easy to listen to with good stories and rounded characters - often graphic, especially in this case, but all part of the telling. Brilliant!

    Excellent!
Joe Lansdale knocks it out of the park again with this very entertaining and fast moving novel. As a previous reviewer noted, it is rather like "Huckleberry Finn meets Deliverance," full of dark twists and turns. While I was not initially thrilled with the narration, I found either the narration improved considerably as time went on, or the story was so captivating it no longer bothered me.
    Sooooo Good !
What made the experience of listening to Edge of Dark Water the most enjoyable?
This was an excellent listening experience all around. Great writing, wonderful story, excellent performance. Highly recommended !
Would you ever listen to anything by Joe Lansdale again?
Absolutely. His writing just gets better with each book. I've listened to "The Thicket", too, one of my favorites.
Have you listened to any of Angéle Masterss other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time listening to her. I will definitely look for more with her narration.
A great story with touches of Huck Finn.
Terry, Sue Ellen, and Jinx go fishing with Sue Ellens father and one of his friends. They think theyve hooked a big fish, but when they pull it in, it turns out to be the corpse of their friend, May Lynn, whose body was sunk with the assistance of a sewing machine tied to her feet. The adult men think they should just push her back into the water. After all, she was known as somewhat of a tramp. But her three friends prevail. Hardly any investigation is made and her body is buried. Then Terry and Sue Ellen and Jinx decide that they will exhume May Lynns body, burn it to ashes in a brick kiln, and take the ashes to Hollywood to scatter, as that is where May Lynn wanted to go. But they also find out that May Lynn knows of a good deal of money which her brother helped a friend rob from a bank and it is buried. So the friends unbury the money and take it with them as well. Then Sue Ellens mother, who has been abused by her husband for some time, decides to go with them and leaves her husband. But May Lynns father knows about the buried money, and he and Sue ellens father, and the deputy sheriff decide to go after the kids and get the money away from them. This is sort of like a thriller with touches of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn about it. The kids and Sue Ellens mother go down the river to get away.

Sorry, I just didn't get ot
What disappointed you about Carnival for the Dead?
Having read (or listed to) all of the Nic Costa series by David Hewson, I came to expect the usual lot of mystery, quirky characters and twists, but this latest (actually stand-alone) novel featuring pathologist Teresa Lupo somehow failed to hook me at all. Masked people move through the cold streets and canals, and I eventually lost track of all of them - especially since there were a number of British expats among them, some of them acting in the here and now, some from centuries ago. And strange small dogs. And of course: The usual influence and symbolism of ancient paintings.
The story flounders between the cold February reality of Venice in the Carnival season and a second novel presented in form of a serial deposited regularly at Teresa's doorstep.Confused? So was I, believe me.
What about Juanita McMahons performance did you like?
She made the most of this convoluted novel.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadly, not a lot. Except maybe to give Venice a wide berth during Carnival.
Not typical Hewson....but stick with it.
.....you will be rewarded wit a rich listening experience ... Especially if you know and/or love Venice.
    Disappointed
It annoyed me and dissatisfied me, throughout. The tortuous plot was much too long and often repetitive. The prose was turgid in places. There were some clever clues, but these were unnecessarily laboured.
I felt that the characterisation of Theresa Lupo was very much at odds with the previous books in the Costa series. I very much preferred the earlier, more self-assured, incarnation.
It certainly didn't help that the narrator knew no Italian. Her pronunciation was cringe-making, and sometimes downright misleading. Bring back Saul Reichlin!
What a disappointment! I wonder if Hewson, whose Costa series I have relished, was working to a publishers deadline and felt obliged to get something out, however inferior it might be?
    A bit different
This is a bit of a departure for David Hewson. Teresa Lupo is on her own in Venice looking for her unconventional missing aunt and has to follow a trail of mystical tails to get to the bottom of why and where she is hiding. It has mystery rather than murder at its centre and the other characters, including Nic Costa, are notable by their absence, apart from the odd related memory or thought. Venice is perfect as a background to this tale, but some of the supernatural aspects might not appeal to all readers.
I miss the usual narrator (Saul Reichlin) whose voice I love and found that Juanita McMahon didn't always get the phrasing right. It also annoys me that directors/editors can't get an Italian expert in to advice on and correct the pronunciation of place names and other Italian words.

It's okay; NOT a "sit down and curl up with a good book" kind of read
When I read for pleasure, I don't want to have to get frustrated because there's a mystery wrapped in another mystery wrapped in fog wrapped in an enigma, shrouded in vagueness, and never resolving. The book is hard to follow. I love reading--I can read three or more books at a time and keep them separated. With this book, I couldn't do that. I enjoy a bit of mystery here and there, but I don't like having to wait for a long time for said mystery to be cleared up, and then for another bunch of mysteries to be piled on top of it. Don't get me wrong, the writer is a good one, but sometimes there are just too many unknowns that it gets confusing.
Additionally, there are frequent areas where a reference will be made to something, whether it be about a character's background, an action, etc, and you feel like you missed something, so you go back a page and re-read--but the information is not there. It's akin to you and a friend being out and about, and you see someone you mutually know--but your friend knows them better than you do. Your friend starts talking about that person, as if you know all the background that they do, and you get a little lost because you don't know what they're talking about.
I wouldn't walk away from it frequently or for long periods if you can, because you'll forget the little nuances that were in parts that you already read, and you'll get lost.
out of the frying pan and into the fire
I have never in my life felt sorrier for a bunch of characters as I have for these.
They've lived through insane experiments at the hands of a deranged doctor. Just when they think they should be able to get their lives back on an even keel, here comes the next wave to push them under -- and it's definitely bigger than a whack-job doctor.
These poor folks deserve a vacation after all this!
And, yet again, Mr. Nicholson has me caring about a group of fictional people that I will never have the chance to meet. His writing draws the reader in and away to a fantasy world and gleefully holds them there for the duration. Once the book is over, you find yourself staggering back to reality, and suddenly wondering about that last prescription your doctor wrote for you . . . . .
    . . . . hmmmmmm . . .

Fliss Benson is a TV producer struggling to deal with a personal tragedy in her own life. She receives at work an anonymous card which consists of 16 numbers arranged in four rows of four. These numbers mean absolutely nothing to her. At the same time, she is handed a particularly unwelcome assignment: she has to work on a documentary about cot death and three mothers accused (wrongly, it seems) of murder: Helen Yardley, Sarah Jaggard and Rachel Hines.
The controversial Dr Judith Duffy, who was responsible for the arraignment of the women after the death of their children, is now under investigation for misconduct, and the women have been set free. Fliss Bensons reluctance to work on the film springs from a particularly personal issue - involving both cot death and the suicide of someone very close to her.

    Disappointing!
Sophie Hanna is among my favorite writers, however this book was not as good as others I've read by her. The idea for the story is good, but it gets dry and boring in places. I didn't feel as if I got to know the characters very well. And I was left with a lot of questions by the end of the book. Also, there weren't any Cliffhangers throughout the story making it not so exciting. I do not recommend this book.
    Excellent book - highly recommended
What made the experience of listening to A Room Swept White the most enjoyable?
The way in which the story was laid out made it two books for the price of one.
The suspense makes it hard to put down.

    Publisher's Summary:
Treachery has a price, in the mesmerizing new thriller from this New York Times best-selling writer.
With his latest novels, Jack Higgins has showed himself on top of his game (Publishers Weekly), his books infused with a timely edginess [that] pulls you along like the surprisingly strong current of the Thames River (Associated Press). The Judas Gate is just as timely and just as surprising.
A disturbing audiotape has made its way to General Charles Ferguson, adviser to the prime minister, and from him to the president of the United States: battlefield chatter from an ambush in Helmand province, Afghanistan, in which 12 U.S. Army Rangers and a British medical team died. Most of the Taliban voices are Afghan, but not all of them - shockingly, some of them are British, and one in particular, the voice of the commander, bears an Irish accent.
The idea that one of their own could be responsible for such a massacre is appalling, and Ferguson immediately puts Sean Dillon in charge of hunting the traitor down. But Dillon has his own way of doing things and, he will eventually discover, so does his quarry. Not only will Dillon be going to war - the war will be coming to him.
Filled with suspense, driven by characters of complexity and passion, The Judas Gate is an unforgettable novel by the man who has produced some of the best suspense fiction of the past 50 years (The San Diego Union-Tribune).
    Members Reviews:
    otherwise a good read.
Right under the nose of the Special British Agents, living near, in plain sigh was an assassin known as Shamrock, who also was a Brit. It took Sean Dillon and a few Agent friends plus assassin who had previously almost killed Dillon to hunt Shamrock down. Too much nostalgic history regarding Ireland and their fight against the British, otherwise a good read.
Another fast ride with Jack Higgins
I am amazed how Higgins cranks out so many books and all of them capture the reader's interest. The Judas Gate was no exception. The pages were turned with unusual speed. A contemporary plot was introduced to the reader; however, we were able to renew our acquaintance with Higgins' familiar cast of characters--Ferguson, Dillon, et al. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Higgins is always a good read!
With Sean Dillon there is never a dull moment. Once again Jack Higgins writes a page turner. A must read.
    Sean is Back!
Another well written story with old and new characters. I'm glad Sean Dillon is back. I've missed him. His character is well written as are all the others.
    Five Stars
    Another excellent book and read
