Death is what life is all about!
Its hot in the jungle. And with the Rat Bastards, whats hot becomes sheer hell. Prison can slow them down. Women can make them happy. But its killing that keeps them going. In the jungle, every shadow, every noise can mean friend - or foe. They shoot first and ask questions never. For them, the war is always just beginning.
    Editorial Reviews:
Down and Dirty, by army veteran turned author Len Levinson, is the fifth installation in the Rat Bastard series. This series belongs in the niche of war fantasy fiction. The Rat Bastards dont have moral qualms or dwell in gray areas. Full of swagger and testosterone, they thrill to combat at every opportunity. Killing legitimizes their existence. Fans of first-person-shooter video games will enjoy this foray into the realm of tropical jungle warfare. Levinsons military experience and knowledge of war history help him create gritty yet fantastical settings for his die-hards. The Rat Bastards are anti-heroes. They go to jail, have trouble with women, and are only at home on the battlefield. Narrator Ray Porters masculine voice guides the listener along this jarring ride.

    Publisher's Summary:
    The eighth Nigel Strangeways mystery.
The Second World War has just finished and amateur detective and poet Nigel Strangeways is working at the Ministry of Morale in London, in the Visual Propaganda Division. With war over, life seems to be calm again, that is until the Director's beautiful secretary is poisoned in full view of seven members of the division, including Nigel himself. Who could have killed her? And how?
Nicholas Blake was the pseudonym of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, who was born in County Laois, Ireland in 1904. After his mother died in 1906, he was brought up in London by his father, spending summer holidays with relatives in Wexford. He was educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1927. Blake initially worked as a teacher to supplement his income from his poetry writing and he published his first Nigel Strangeways novel, A Question of Proof, in 1935. Blake went on to write a further 19 crime novels, all but four of which featured Nigel Strangeways, as well as numerous poetry collections and translations.
During the Second World War he worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information, which he used as the basis for the Ministry of Morale in Minute for Murder, and after the war he joined the publishers Chatto & Windus as an editor and director. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968 and died in 1972 at the home of his friend, the writer Kingsley Amis.
    Critic Reviews:
"An outstanding mystery novel. Mr Blake's writing is a delight in itself." (New York Times)
"A master of detective fiction." (Daily Telegraph)
"His plots are ingenious." (Times Literary Supplement)

Minute fo Murder but a year to solve
Awul. The first chapter brilliantly conveyed the atmosphere of an english war time office and the brits with all their inhibitions and idiosyncracies. All this done by superb subtle language that only Lewis can do but the same genius used his powers to make the crime detection so complicated it is impossible to follow. It just went way over the top with the author himself making complicated lists of "who dunnits "
    Minute for Murder
Published in 1947, this is the eighth Nigel Strangeways novel; following on from âThe Case of the Abominable Snowman,â which took place in the opening months of the Second World War. London is now a very different city than it was in previous novels in the series, with a weary and battered population . We also discover, almost as a side note, that Nigelâs wife, Georgia, who featured heavily in some previous books in the series, had been killed during the Blitz. Georgia Cavendish was supposedly based on Margaret Marshall, an older woman that Nicholas Blake (or rather Cecil Day-Lewis, as Blake was a pen name) had an affair with while he was at Oxford. Oddly, the author killed the fictional Georgia off in 1941, at the time when he began an affair with the novelist Rosamond Lehmann while married to Constance Mary King.
We find Nigel Strangeways working at the Ministry of Morale, a place also based on real life, as Day-Lewis worked at the Ministry of Information during the war. The war is nearly over â VE day has already been celebrated â and those who work at the Ministry expect their department to be disbanded in the next few months.

    Publisher's Summary:
He was a man without hope, until a lawyer and a crazy inheritance spurred him to one last desperate roll of the dice.
The old man was convinced, against all evidence, that there was oil in the Rocky mountains. So his grandson sets off to a godforsaken town of shattered hopes and bitter old men, and plunges into a perilous battle against hostile country, powerful enemies, and a ticking clock.
About the author: Ralph Hammond Innes was a British novelist who wrote over 30 novels, as well as childrens and travel books. Born in Horsham, Sussex, he started work as a journalist with the Financial Times (at the time called the Financial News). The Doppelganger, his first novel, was published in 1937.
In WWII he served in the Royal Artillery, eventually rising to the rank of Major. During the war, a number of his books were published, including Wreckers Must Breathe (1940), The Trojan Horse (1941), and Attack Alarm (1941); the last of which was based on his experiences as an anti-aircraft gunner during the Battle of Britain at RAF Kenley.
After being demobbed in 1946, he worked full-time as a writer. Innes great love and experience of the sea, as an experienced yachtsman, was reflected in many of his novels. At his death he left the bulk of his estate to the Association of Sea Training Organisations, to enable others to gain training and experience in sailing the element he loved.
    Critic Reviews:
"John Buchan, Stevenson, Henty and Rider Haggard would all, I think, look benevolently upon Mr. Innes." (Elizabeth Bowen)
"A fast and expertly managed story... the Rockies, the squalid 'ghost towns', the dam-building - alll memorably represented" (Sunday Times)
"The British have always been good at producing adventure story writers. Hammond Innes was exceptional even within an exceptional breed...he was...a romantic adventurer in the style of Rider Haggard, Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling." (Guardian)

A masterpiece and a riveting performance by the reader
An incredible and inspiring journey by an Englishman from his monotonous existence complicated by a death sentence in the form of inoperable cancer to the Canadian Rocky Mountains where he found a new purpose in his life pursuing the dreams of his late grandfather. It's a story of hope and determination. Knowing that he had nothing to lose, and driven by the desire to clear his grandfather's name, the protagonist defied impossible odds. I must add that the artful performance by Mark Elstob gave life to the character and made the experience a real joy. Highly recommended
    A Timeless Adventure
This adventure story, is fast moving and extremely enjoyable. Mark Elstob did a fantastic job in narration, but of course we have to thank Hammond for his research and dedication for writing a fantastic story that can still be enjoyed by todays youngsters that love a good adventure novel. Thank you Hammond, and may you continue to write a good story for those in heaven with you.

    A Thrill Ride
I have never read anything by Chris Kuzneski before but The Hunters had been recommended to me a number of times. I figured I'd give it a shot and listen to the audiobook.
What a thrill ride, edge of your seat action, fun and interesting characters and a historical mystery. The chapters are short and it's easy to get into the story. If you like a dose of humour with your action, definitely give this book a try. I had moments of actually laughing out loud.
Dudley Hinton really immerses the listener in the action of the story, making the unbelievable, believable with his performance. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
a gripping start to a new series
Where does The Hunters rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
this is possibly the best audiobook I have ever heard, and definitely the best Chris Kuzneski novel.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the author's ability to shift the opinions of the listeners with regards to the characters again and again, without ever getting lost or confused. And the level of research which has clearly gone into the story.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I love any scene in which the abilities of the main characters come together in beautiful harmony with spectacular results.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The book will make you experience every emotion possible, as you are taken through comedy, betrayal, love and hate.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a well researched gripping novel, that is also filled with comedy and black humour.
    Decent story, some odd pronunciation
Whilst this type of story is by no means original (think A-team for the 21st century), the author provides a story which is detailed enough to satisfy, while containing enough action to keep the plot moving along. Clearly the author has done a lot of research in preparing this book, and the cross-generational linkages provide a continuity seldom found in this type of book.
The characters are quite well developed - although only limited back-story is provided, and then mostly through the device of round-table introductions when the team get together. There are also a couple of errors/loose ends which were a little annoying, but mainly in the initial phase of the book so they were not essential to the overall plot.
The one downside is some rather eccentric pronunciation from the reader.

    Not Bad....
    ...but not great either !
I read this years ago and thought I'd give it a listen as I enjoyed it then.....it is narrated well but not as good as I remembered it to be...still worth a listen though.
    Formulaic
Would you try another book written by Graham Masterton or narrated by Ian Porter?
I've read several books by Graham Masterton some of them quite good, this book isn't very good.
Would you ever listen to anything by Graham Masterton again?
    Possibly
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Ian Porter?
Mr Porter did an adequate job & ive no opinion on who could replace him
What character would you cut from The Pariah?
    Possibly the pointless girlfriend.
    Any additional comments?
This story was like a hotch potch of all the unbelievable horror & ghost stories I've read,it was incredibly silly & definitely not one I'd listen to again
    A must listen.
Brilliant, well narrated and a great story. I first read this book year's ago. Even better second time around and truly given life by Ian Porter. The setting is perfect and the unfolding story works brilliantly around it.

    Members Reviews:
    Impossible to get through
What disappointed you about Fox Tracks?
The narration. I enjoyed these rather simplistic books when they had decent narrators. This author should NOT read her own books.
What do you think your next listen will be?
No more foxhunting mysteries, if Rita Mae Brown reads them.
What didnt you like about Rita Mae Browns performance?
Everything. Timing was so bad, pauses where there shouldn't have been pauses.
What character would you cut from Fox Tracks?
    Never got to character development
    Any additional comments?
Totally a waste of money and time.
    Brown does Virginia and hunting
Rita Mae does another wonderful job reading her Sister Jane books. Although I have all of her books in print, I only buy the Sister books in audio. This is because Rita Mae reads them herself. I sit back and luxure in the sound of home and enjoy the fact that no mispronounciations jar my ear. Also her emphasis of some phrases adds to my understanding of what attitude she is conveying. It is a lot of fun reading a book that takes place in an area you grew up in, wherever it may be.
    another hit!!
loved Foxtracks! as always RNB didn't disappoint but cleverly scribbed a tale of enjoyable mayhem
    Run from this narrator
Would you be willing to try another one of Rita Mae Browns performances?
I would think that reading one's own book would be a slam dunk, but Ms. Brown sounds like she has never read a book out loud before and she needs a LOT more practice before she does it again. I gave up on the book 30 minutes into it.
    Tally Ho!
Would you listen to Fox Tracks again? Why?
Oh yes, just love this series by Rita May Brown Love the backdrop of fox hunting, love the way the animals have a voice......
Who was your favorite character and why?
More than one, it's the animals, as they have voices, too.
Have you listened to any of Rita Mae Browns other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, she is good, better than most
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end, as it was unexpected, her plots have so many twists!
    Any additional comments?
Can't wait for another in this series~keep them coming!

In the hopes of proving his innocence, he sets out to find the truth. Now, isolated from friends and family and devoid of an alibi, he turns to the only person left who can help pick up the pieces of his shattered lifethe dead girl herself.
Rector understands the complexities of a haunting tale and a compelling who-done-it, and he takes listeners on a ride that is both memorable and unsettling.
    Critic Reviews:
Tough, dark, and beautifully told. Great storytelling. (David Peoples, screenwriter of Unforgiven, Twelve Monkeys, and Blade Runner)
Spare and evocative as a cornfield in autumn, The Grove marks the arrival of a haunting, powerful new voice in contemporary fiction. John Rector writes with deceptive grace, spinning out irresistible prose with a dark pulse between every line. This is psychological suspense at its most seductive. I loved it. (Sean Doolittle, award-winning author of Dirt, Burn, Rain Dogs, The Cleanup, and Safer)
    Members Reviews:
    A waste of time!!
I quit my efforts to listen to The Grove at the midway point. I like some of John Rector's novels, but not this one. I like many very dark novels so that is not the issue. The issue is boredom. Narration is OK.
    Wasted two hours in futility
Would you try another book from John Rector and/or Todd Haberkorn?
    No.
What was most disappointing about John Rectors story?
The story was oddly disjointed with no clear path or hook.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Todd Haberkorn?
    J. Charles hands down. I would probably suffer through a lousy story just to hear him tell it.
What character would you cut from The Grove?
After listening for two hours I didn't care for any of them. I believe that speaks for itself.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator really needs to work on his breathing technique. The writer...better outlining or character development?
    not my favorite
This book was ok but not my favorite by Rector. It was a little weird, not suspenseful.
Well written but such a sad broken story
Well I am just not into such depressing stories. I thought this would be a different type of story in the long run as my kindle unlimited recommended it to me supposedly based on books I liked but sadly they were mistaken . There wasn't anything healing about it just madness and depression. Not my thing.
The performance was good... Story was....
So so. The story is about a mental I'll man that I think has schizophrenia. He sees a ghost of a dead girl. She torments him and trys to make him to do bad things.
The story itself was really hard to follow along with.

    Members Reviews:
Is Grandpa Simpson an appropriate reader?
What disappointed you about The Friends of Eddie Coyle?
The story is clearly great, but it is totally undermined by the fact that the narrator appears to be Grandpa Simpson, and he's forgotten to put his teeth in for a few of the scenes. All of the pace of the original story is sapped by the narrator's slow drawl. And his attempt at different voices (young child, southern idiot, black guy) are laughable. I particularly enjoyed the small boy crying "Daddy!", in the weird high pitch tones of a 60 year old man.
The reading has almost put me off finishing the audiobook, because I feel like I'm not doing the original book justice.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's hard to really bond with any of the characters, given that they've all been reduced to gibbering elderly gents, regardless of whether they are in fact gun runners, hoodlums, FBI agents or small children.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Mark Hammer?
    James Gandolfini (RIP).
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Friends of Eddie Coyle?
I wouldn't cut any scenes - it's an unabridged edition.
    Brutal and powerful story
This is an old school crime and violence tale that delivers with unremittingly gloomy power. It stands the test of time well.

Solid 2nd entry in The Charlie McNally Series
Hank Phillippi Ryan's novels shine most brightly when she writes the life she knows best. A fast-paced story with well-developed characters, despite a couple of convenient coincidences.

    Ho- Hum
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes and no. Most of the characters were male and the narrator was female attemtping to also pull off Russian accents for male characters, began to grate on the nerves.
What did you like best about this story?
It was an interesting twist to the story of what happened to the Romanov family. Quite surprising actually and believable.
What didnt you like about Kate Readings performance?
Her attempt at narrating for male characters with Russian accents.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Possibly, it would have to move along faster.
    Any additional comments?
The story took a while to develop, too long, last 1/4 of the book was the best part. Could have been better, the story line was rather good. Better choice of naarator needed for this particular story.
    Interesting twist on history...
Would you consider the audio edition of The Romanov Conspiracy to be better than the print version?
    I wouldn't know
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lydia. She was a tough, strong, woman, with passion and heart.
What aspect of Kate Readings performance would you have changed?
The different Russian men were hard to keep straight.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Ultimately, I felt sad...same as when I read about this period of time as a History major.
