Penguin presents The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen, a sensational new crime-writing talent from the same Swedish editorial team and publisher as Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. Read by the actress Candida Gubbins.
Ingrid Olsson returns home from a Stockholm hospital to discover a man in her kitchen. She's never seen the intruder before. But he's no threat - he's dead. Criminal Investigator Conny Sjoberg takes the call, abandoning his wife Asa and their five children for the night. His team identify the body as that of a middle-aged family man. But why was he there? And who bludgeoned him to death?
Lacking suspect and motive, Sjoberg's team struggle until they link the case to another - apparently random - killing. And discover they face a serial killer on a terrible vendetta.... The Gingerbread House is the first title in The Hammarby Series, novels following Detective Inspector Conny Sjoberg and his murder investigation team - a gripping feast for all fans of Jo Nesbo, Camilla Lackberg, and Henning Mankell.
Carin Gerhardsen was born in 1962 in Katrineholm, Sweden. Originally a mathematician, she enjoyed a successful career as an IT consultant before turning her hand to writing crime fiction. Carin now lives in Stockholm with her husband and their two children. She is currently working on the seventh title in the series.
    Critic Reviews:
"Carin Gerhardsen writes so vividly, like she is painting with words, gripping your heart and soul in an ever-tightening tourniquet" (Peter James)"Gerhardsen brings a timely perspective to the serial killer genre, as her characters are engulfed by the worst possible consequences of their childhood cruelties. The pages turn themselves, right up the final startling twist" (John Verdon)

    Not my cup of tea
I pre-ordered this book and started listening the day it arrived. I enjoy discovering a new Scandinavian author that has a clever story idea and lots of talent. The reviews looked good so I was expecting something on the level of Jussi Adler-Olsen or Camilla Lackberg.
The narration was unsettling to me from the start. Gubbins seems like a very capable narrator, but her voice and accent was annoying to me. I actually considered buying the Kindle version to get through the story. Despite the narration, I never got hooked into the story. Even though I knew before the book started that the serial killer would be revealed to the reader, I thought the police procedural would be interesting on how they would catch him. That never happened for me.

He has spiralling debts, and his mother's gravy-train has just derailed. So he has a plan: He's going to find somebody rich, and take them hostage.
With the help of an ex-con, a psycho gardener and the beautiful psychic Reverend Dawn, he chooses bookmaker Harry Arno as the lucky victim. The trouble is, Harry can scam with the best of them. An entertaining sequel to Pronto
Riding The Rap is a direct sequel to the Leonard's novel Pronto. Pronto ended with Raylan exacting revenge on Tommy Bucks and hooking up with Harry's ex Joyce while ex-mafia bookie Harry Arno remained a lonely whining crybaby.
Riding The Rap picks up a year later. Raylan is still in a relationship with Joyce, although they are having problems due to Joyce continuing to enable and aid Harry, who has become a depressed alcoholic and is still talking of retiring and moving to Italy. Because of the celebrity and controversy that Raylan received after his shooting of Tommy Bucks the Marshals service has assigned him to work with Miami police in a special task force that tracks down fugitives. The novel opens with Raylan bringing a man back to Miami who was arrested for a DUI and then discovered to have a warrant out for his arrest. The journey ends in typical Raylan fashion, with him arresting 2 others and bringing them to justice as well.
Harry is still around. Like in Pronto, he is still talking about moving to Italy and retiring. With the mafia no longer after him, Harry continued to operate a book in Miami. But now that he again has decided to retire he has been collecting all the large debts owed to him, with Joyce's help as she is driving him around due to Harry losing his own license because of a DWI arrest. Harry manipulates Joyce into helping him and always feeling sorry for him. Harry hires Bobby Deo, aspiring gardener who works as a bounty hunter, to track down a man named Chip Ganz who owes Harry $16,500. But instead Chip talks Bobby into helping him and Chip's muscle, a Jamaican man named Louis Lewis, into working for them and its Harry who goes missing soon instead.
When Joyce finds out that Harry is missing again she begs Raylan to go looking for him again. Raylan would rather let Harry stay gone, but he can't let a mystery go unsolved or a potential crime go unpunished and hits the road looking for Harry once more which sets him on a path for a showdown with the three amateur criminals and an attractive psychic named Reverend Dawn who has a history with Ganz.
For anyone who is familiar with the tv series Justified, this episode was actually adapted for the show already. It was the third episode of season 1 entitled "Fixer".

Robert Gregory Browne tells very twisted tales
    Any additional comments?
This book is exactly what I've come to expect from Robert Gregory Browne. Twisted main plot with multiple sub plots all coming to a spell binding conclusion. Characters are fleshed out, generally the protagonist is an injured person with multiple flaws that lead them down the wrong path. The conclusion is not expected. Scott Brick's performance is as always flawless.
    Unexpected
If you could sum up Whisper in the Dark in three words, what would they be?
    Really enjoyable listen
What other book might you compare Whisper in the Dark to and why?
The voodoo aspect of the book was unexpected, but quite fascinating. It was a similar mould to the John Connolly books, where some of the characters are beyond the grave, but the theme is not overdone.
What about Scott Bricks performance did you like?
When Scott Brick is reading a boring book his delivery makes it even worse, but when he's reading an interesting book his style is very listenable.
    ******Kept me guessing!******
Love thrillers that keep me guessing. Although, I touched on the killer once, I later disregarded my conclusion and changed my mind. There are so many twists and turns in the story, guessing who the victims and who the psychopathic killer is , is nearly impossible. This story provided a suspenseful , and total entertaining listen. The narration only added to the story. Love it when book style and narration comes together so harmoniously.
Grab a cup of coffee and prepare to be taken away.
This was my first Robert Gregory Browne book, but after listening it will not be my last. I was sucked in from the beginning, there were places in the book where he milked it longer than I would have liked, but that just added to the suspense. It was hard to put this book down, there were even places in the book where I found my hand covering my mouth in surprise. In my opinion this is a must read, or listen.
    so many plot twists!
If you could sum up Whisper in the Dark in three words, what would they be?
    many plot twists
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes! wow, at the end all the plot twists had my head turning like Linda Blair, because I was trying to keep up with the changes. Between the doctor, his girlfriend, and mental gymnastics that the main characters went through, my attention was kept right on the story, trying to keep up.

This is the Book "The Purity of Vengeance" Renamed
This has happened to me previously. Audible brings another narrator's version of the story online, changes the title for the North American audience, and I end up buying it, unaware that I have already listened to the novel. I am a bit torqued over this because now I have to go through the hassle of returning the book. I have purchased 1257 audio books and I want to be able to rely on Audible to get this stuff right the first time.
Buy the "Purity of Vengeance," narrated by Graeme Malcomhe is a much more compelling narrator.
Same book as Purity of Vengeance, just renamed!
    What disappointed you about Guilt?
I didn't buy "The Purity of Vengeance" on Amazon.uk. I bought it here, I was thrilled when I saw a new book in the Dept Q series... didn't need to read the summary, just bought it. Then as I got ready to download it, I read the the synopsis and thought it sounded awfully familiar! There should be something in Audible's database that detects a purchase like this. Yes, I was able to return it, but why waste my time?!
What other book might you compare Guilt to and why?
Um ... The Purity of Vengeance!
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Steven Pacey?
    Irrelevant
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment
    Any additional comments?
I think my feelings are obvious at this point!
I've heard this and once was enough.
Audible - you don't have to include my rating. I'm using this as a way to ask for $ back. I couldn't sleep last night and needed a book to listen to. This seemed to be brand new but as soon as it started I realized that I had heard it before, that I didn't want to hear it again, and in no event was it a good book to use to help with sleep! In the past I think I've been told by my library when I try to buy a book I've already got.

Too late a missing journal convinces Mitch the fishermen are innocent. The real murderer is sailing away to paradise. He and Vivian have a decision to make: are they capable of crossing the Pacific Ocean and bringing their friends' killer to justice? This sexy, action-packed sea adventure takes you on a roller coaster ride that never lets up.
    Members Reviews:
A basic 'whodunnit' involving sailing in the South Pacific
There is a lot of extreme detail about sailing and the South Pacific Marquesas Islands, so if you are passionate about these, you may find this book especially interesting.
Otherwise, too much detail can become somewhat annoying and simply slow the story down.
Although there is some occasional sex mentioned in the book, I would consider adjectives like "sexy" or "steamy" to be highly exaggerated. If this is what you're looking for, you will probably be disappointed.
A part from all this, it is your basic 'whodunnit' with a likable, though totally overblown, hero and a couple of surprises every now and then.
    A hard slog to windward
As someone who has lived on a sailboat for over 15 years, I can vouch to the author's knowledge of most things nautical. That's why there are two stars and not just one. He gets one star because the book is formulaic. You know the guys that get arrested didn't do it. You are left with our hero pursuing the guy he thinks did it, while another person of interest has slipped away. Okay. It's a murder mystery, of course it's formulaic. The, ahem, red herrings seem more appropriate here, literally.
The books chugs along at a fair pace, the author's style is interesting and insightful, neither too deep nor too humorous, until the 30% point (I said it's formulaic, didn't I?), but then all hell breaks loose - literally. Within the span of a couple of weeks (condensed to a few pages) our heroes are subjected to EVERY bad thing that can happen to someone crossing an ocean. And I mean everything. Hell! They don't even clear the harbor without not one, but two major catastrophes. The problem is this is where the author falters badly. Instead of building excitement, tension, it's a case of What? Again? What else could go wrong? BOOM! And then the hit man shows up. Say what?!
And part of the problem is that I don't really care about the crew. The author has delivered comprehensive bios about everybody else to the point that our heroes kind of fade into the scene, just another couple of set pieces. It's like he's assigned a stack of CVs to different boats and it's hard to tell them apart.

Our governmentour economyour very way of life are in the crosshairs of a ruthless enemyand no one knows. Except Garrett Reilly. He has a knack for numbers. He sees patterns no one else can. His gift has made him a rising star on Wall Street. But when he notices that two hundred billion dollars' worth of U.S. Treasury bonds are being sold off at a terrifying rate, his gift makes him the most wanted man alive.
The U.S. military wants him for his extraordinary abilities. They need someone to lead a crack squad of rogue soldiers to act as the last line of defense in a war that could mean the end of everything America holds dear. And everyone else? They just want him dead.
In this explosive debut novel, ranging from the offices of Wall Street to the casinos of Vegas to the back roads of the Chinese countryside, Drew Chapman introduces listeners to a new kind of action hero: One uniquely skilled to fight a new kind of war.
    Members Reviews:
    War Games meets Wall Street
[Chose this after reading an Audible Editor's review.] Drew Chapman is a TV writer turned author, and this debut book reads like a political/cyber/financial thriller that could almost be extrapolated from our current headlines: cyber espionage, high finance and international terrorism, the virtual world colliding with the real world. Chapman refrains from using the esoteric lexicon of computers and finances, writing a book that appeals to those of us that are not computer geeks or financial wizards.
In the author's own words, Ascendant antagonist Garrett Reilly is "me, a bunch of years and many bong hits ago...Deeply patriotic and at the same time prone to spasms of anti-Americanism." Garrett Diego Reilly is a 'half Mexican, half Irish surfer from Long Beach' with a boulder-sized chip on his shoulder against the US military, which he blames for the death of his brother in Iraq. Cocky, irreverent, and fast-living, he drops out of Yale and becomes a successful Wall Street bonds trader. He also is a wiz with numbers and computers-- a beautiful mind that sees patterns and predictions in those numbers. When he notices that hundreds of billions of U.S. Treasury Bonds are being sold off and thousands of properties are being dumped for fractions of their worth, he knows this is big -- he is about to become unimaginably wealthy. When the US nuclear plant control programs are invaded by a virus that he connects to China -- he knows this is bigger than just fortuitous economic panic.
The US government has also seen a pattern, an ominous global gauntlet throw-down, and sends Army Captain Alexis Truffant to recruit the government-hating wunderkind Reilly to head up a secret military project, *Ascendant*. But it takes more than Capt.

Just how did it disappear when the doors and windows were securely locked?
A bevy of helpful houseguests offer endless assistance, but the two detectives suspect that they are concealing vital information. Could the treasures on the library shelves be so valuable that someone would murder for them?
    Members Reviews:
Country house mystery with an artistic twist
This was my first Michael Innes book and I enjoyed it. I was hoping there would be more about painting in it, as Honeybath is a Royal Academician and portrait painter. (I am a figure painter myself). However, he never did get around to beginning his portrait, which is ostensibly why he finds himself in the setting which contains this clever mystery.
Actor-musician Jeremy Clyde provides his usual good timing and beautiful tone for the narration. (He comes by that posh voice honestly, you know). The only thing I'd change would be just a touch more differentiation between the characters.
Order a Bucks Fizz and listen for yourself. It's worth a credit, and I for one will be back for more.
    A good classic detective mystery
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is a lovely mystery set in an english country house during a house party. It combines this already classic murder setting with a body in the library, which vanishes before the police arrive. The retired detective, the actual police, Honeybath the artist and all the personalities of the house guests could lead to one big confusing mess but they don't. I'd definitely recommend it to someone who liked classic english mysteries.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Near the beginning you have people's reaction to Honeybath's tale of discovering a body, followed by the body vanishing and the various reactions to it. This was written very well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It is a bit long for that, but in between bouts of listening I did think about the story and wonder what was coming next.
    Any additional comments?
I would recommend this to anyone who likes classic british mysteries.
