    Language: English
    Release date: 01-13-15

    Publisher's Summary:
An edge-of-your-seat novel from the phenomenal Sophie Hannah.
When her plane is delayed overnight, Gaby Struthers finds herself forced to share a hotel room with a stranger: a terrified young woman named Lauren Cookson - but why is she scared of Gaby in particular?
Lauren won't explain. Instead, she blurts out something about an innocent man going to prison for a murder he didn't commit, and Gaby soon suspects that Lauren's presence on her flight can't be a coincidence. Because the murder victim is Francine Breary, the wife of the only man Gaby has ever truly loved. Tim Breary has confessed, and even provided the police with evidence. The only thing he hasn't given them is a motive. He claims to have no idea why he murdered his wife....

    Sophie Hannah, always interesting
The plot here was ridiculous, as Hannah's plots are getting to be. The Spilling police are becoming more of a joke than ever. Actually, this was almost a stand-alone book since the cops had so little to do with it. Liv and Briggs are still in their unlikely involvement, while Simon and Charlie's marriage is as inexplicable as ever. Yet I found this a thoroughly enjoyable book for some reason. Hannah just has that gift of creating interesting characters and putting them in situations where you are compelled to find out what happens. Maybe it is because it's all so absurd, but a Sophie Hannah "thriller" (hah) really is always worth reading.
    Well, It Helped My Insomnia...
What disappointed you about The Carrier?
Everything except the narrator. The story had great promise, but after the first "scene," it was just mind-numbingly boring.
What was most disappointing about Sophie Hannahs story?
I read the first few pages in a bookstore, and the opening was so compelling, but after that first scene in the airport, everything else was torture to get through. It's one thing if an author just can't write, but this was a particular betrayal as the remainder of the novel had none of the tone of the opening...Bait and Switch, anyone?
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene in the airport was fantastic! Truly. This was my first glance at a Sophie Hannah novel, and I was sold... unfortunately. I immediately felt like I knew the characters; I was invested in the situation; everything was there. Do yourself a favor, though; just read that scene. The rest of the book is boring, and the characters become far less engaging.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Betrayal at how such a stellar beginning became such a boring book.
    Any additional comments?
I mentioned earlier that this was my first glance at a Sophie Hannah novel: It will be my last. I'm not trusting this author to maintain quality throughout an entire novel.
The narrator, however, was excellent. I'm searching out more of her work.

    Threatening Shades of Gray
What did you love best about All Souls: A Gatehouse Thriller?
The best thing about the novel (besides the excellent characterization and character interaction, always this author's strong point) is the shifting sense of who can be trusted and who can't. Plot twists leave the character (and protagonist) on shaky ground - puts the "thrill" in "thriller." And I liked Doughty's narrative voice; worth mentioning in an audio book.

    Release date: 08-12-14
    Publisher: Stephen Douglas
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Volume two of The King Trilogy, The Tainted Trust, is a moving, action-packed thriller as well as a brilliant depiction of what perfectly normal people will do for love and money. It is the continuing story of an inconvenient fortune and its catastrophic impact on a loving family.
No one wept when Jim Servito died. He left an estate amounting to $325,000,000 when his wife, Karen, killed him in Caracas. He had accumulated the fortune the old fashioned way: He stole it from the US and Canadian governments using a brilliant gasoline tax-evasion scam. The money is hot, deposited in a Cayman Island bank, and it's cursed. It has a profound effect on everyone who touched it. It is managed by Alfred Schnieder, an aging and unscrupulous Caracas banker.
Mike King, the love of Karen's life and a man nearly ruined by the Feds' scorched-earth efforts to recover Servito's fortune, convinces her to keep the money instead of returning it to its rightful owners. With the assistance of Schnieder, they form The King Trust - a near fatal mistake. The desperate Feds continue to spare no expense and effort to recover the money. Phillip, the only child of Karen and Jim Servito, assumes he is the natural heir to his father's fortune - and he has his own greedy plans for the money. Aging Alfred Schnieder relinquishes the trust's management to Louis Visconti, a 32-year-old Wall Street whiz kid and brilliant financial engineer.
Kerri Pyper, Mike King's 23-year-old estranged daughter, has not seen or communicated with her father since she was nine. She discovers the existence of The King Trust and is shocked to learn that her natural father is its Trustee. Visconti, desperate and assuming he is still the smartest man in the room, embezzles the fortune and flees to Monaco. He made only two mistakes: He deceived both Mike King and Alfred Schnieder, and he fell in love with Kerri.

A best seller in the UK, this gripping thriller of a family that vanishes into thin air is Tim Weaver's American debut.
Emily Kane arrives at her sister Carrie's house to find the front door unlocked, dinner on the table, and the family nowhere to be found - Carrie, her husband, and two daughters have disappeared. When the police turn up no leads, Emily turns to her former boyfriend David Raker, a missing-persons investigator, to track the family down. Tim Weaver's thrillers have been hugely popular in the UK, and now Never Coming Back will introduce his beloved character David Raker to American audiences. Set in Las Vegas and a small fishing village in England, the novel is a smart, fast-paced thriller sure to keep listeners guessing until the very end.

    Wheres the Phoograph?
This one could have done with more storytelling and less explaining.
Part of what made The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series such compelling novels was that the main character, through his actions, told the story. That is, we the readers discovered the story along with the character. In Never Coming Back, the main character, David, doesnt do much worthwhile discovering on his own.
Just as in the Dragon Tattoo there is a photograph and a missing person well, a whole family, actually and a distant family member comes to our investigator and says find em. Unlike in the Dragon Tattoo, our investigator doesnt follow one clue to the next and the next. He argues with his partner, he fights with witnesses and suspects, and he doesnt follow-up on significant leads. Ultimately our investigator follows one corpse to the next and the next, and this high body count does not bode well for our missing family!
The Big Reveal isnt learned through independent action on the part of our investigator, but instead is explained to us via exposition from a character on an iffy cell phone connection. I suppose the author intended the dropped words to build suspense. Instead it was tiresome and frustrating. And the last solid 30 minutes of the book is nothing but exposition, the Bad Guy sitting with David explaining why he went along with certain schemes and did what he did.
All in all Never Coming Back is not the best book for fans of mysteries and thrillers. Perhaps someone less familiar with the genre would find this book enjoyable. I found it somewhat uninspired.
David Bauckham overall wasnt awful to listen to, but his American accents? Pretty awful to listen to!
Tiresome. Could engage in this one.
Hard for me to be specific, but I couldn't get into this one. Really nothing to dislike, but nothing to excite interest, either. It just seemed to plod on and on, until I lost interest and gave up on it.
I really thought that I would like this book.
What disappointed you about Never Coming Back?
The narrator's voice. I thought I could get past that if the story was a good one. I was willing to overlook that if the plot could keep it together.

    Fantastic.
I love the Origin Series, the writing is great, the characters fun and the action is off the scale. Just what you come to expect from David Wood & Rick Chesler. This was a great match-up of authors. I would highly recommend these novellas. Jeffrey Kafer is on fine form yet again, his narration really brings the characters to life. Give it a listen.
    An Excellent Non-Stop Thrill Ride
Would you listen to Splashdown again? Why?
Splashdown is a book that I would listen to again. It has a film feel to it and like any good film I would want to watch it again. The same applies to this book. It's the perfect length to lay back and close your eyes and visualize the setting and the characters.
What did you like best about this story?
What I liked best about this story were all the fine details. I liked when they discovered the other ship. Finding the coins, the silver mercury dimes with markings on them was so descriptive. Trying to get to the Libery Bell and beat the Russians to the early piece of space tech. The whole story was brilliant.
What about Jeffrey Kafers performance did you like?
I really like Jeffrey Kafer's steady paced performance. I like his vocal flexibility and professionalism.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My extreme reaction to this book was pure enjoyment. It was both entertaining and engaging.
    Any additional comments?
I would love to hear more Dane and Bones Origins Stories. I also want to credit the authors David Wood and Rick Chesler for their superb writing. I received this audiobook free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

Another Great Read From an Awesome Author!
Liza Marklund continues to surprise me with her wonderful books. From the very first book to this latest one, I am fascinated with following the adventures of journalist Annika Bengtzon. The books to read in order are: Exposed (aka Studio 69), Vanished (aka Paradise), Prime Time, The Bomber, Red Wolf, Novel's Last Will, Lifetime and A Place in the Sun (aka The Long Shadow). I'm looking forward to following Annika Bengtzon in the next novel from this great author. Sometimes I can catch the movie made from one of her books that have subtitles in English. Still thrilling and so very closely followed from the books.
Should have been two novels-as it was two stories. ...
Should have been two novels-as it was two stories. I have read all of Marklund's books and the fist part of this book was fast-paced, believable, an interesting look at Swedish crime in Spain. There was crime, sex, infidelity, lying, people pretending to be something they weren't, organized crime, houses being gased-and then robbed. Definitely a nail-biter. The second half is a follow up on a lost girl, Marklund tries to tie it all together but I thought it was a reach. 5 Stars for part 1 - 2 stars for the second story.
    Four Stars
    good book series
    More Annika, Please!
Another strong entry in this strangely addictive series about crime reporter Annika Bengtzon. All of them should be read in order, but this one in particular is a sequel to Lifetime.
Much of The Long Shadow is set on Spain's Costa del Sol and Ms Marklund has perfectly captured the tacky overbuilding of southern Europe's coastline resorts.
    These books are fun!
Note to Annika: Don't get back with your jerk of an ex-husband and ease up on Sofia. I know you won't pay any attention to me, but I'm right...
    the best yet
The most complex yet. Some are warning there is a theme from earlier books, while this is true, I think most readers should not be concerned to much about it. Pay the most attention to her personal life in the past. She does a good job at the end tying the complex story together and also gives you reminders of the previous story. This is, as always with her, a well written story that does have surprises at the end!!

    Still a superb read!
I don't normally go for older books myself as I often find the writing style and language used a put off, but this book has a timeless quality to it and was an easy read. Was sucked right in to the plot and loved going back to previous chapters to look for subtle clues. I was convinced I had deduced the murderer at least 3 times before the truth was revealed. The ending wasn't 100% convincing as an explanation if I am honest but a minor point. Narrator was superb and brought the many characters to life excellently.
    A Masterpiece
    Any additional comments?
The perfect - and possibly ultimate - whodunnit!
