    Title: The King of Fear
Subtitle: A Garrett Reilly Thriller, Book 2
    Author: Drew Chapman
    Narrator: George Newbern
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-16
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 30 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The blistering sequel to The Ascendant: an action-packed thriller starring a bond trader turned antihero. Unlikely patriot Garrett Reilly can identify threats against America from both inside and outside the nation's borders. But now the whole world economy is at risk....
Garrett Reilly sees what others do not: numbers, patterns, a nation on the brink of collapse. His unique talents saved countries from falling into a world war in The Ascendant. But it also made him a marked man - marked by terrorist groups; marked by the US government.
In The King of Fear, Garrett recognizes a string of events that could lead to economic Armageddon in the US: banks closing, grocery shelves lying empty, the nation's currency rendered worthless. Total chaos could engulf society within a matter of days. Garrett and the Ascendant team reunite to face enemies on all sides: a wounded Russia bent on keeping its crumbling empire in place, a cyber genius fixated on Garrett, a femme fatale willing to do anything to establish a new world order. In the midst of this, Garrett must also confront his own demons: his class rage, growing paranoia, and a dependency that he cannot seem to shake. After all, it takes only one card to make the whole house fall....
A hero with complete disregard for rules and boundaries, Drew Chapman's rogue genius gives readers "a wild ride through the headlines of our times" (Kirkus Reviews on The Ascendant), and this sequel will not disappoint.

    A huge disappointment
After reading Drew Chapman's first book, The Ascendant, I had eagerly awaited the sequel. Well, I could not have been more disappointed. The first few minutes say it all (not a spoiler, really, since it's the first thing that happens): a prominent figure is murdered and the murderer blurts out that our protagonist made her do it right before taking her own life. FOR SOME BIZARRE REASON, this is deemed enough reason for an FBI agent to risk her career by warning our protagonist to RUN because they're coming to arrest him. And run he does. ARREST HIM??? Seriously? Because a deranged woman blurted out his name?!!! Wouldn't they merely want to QUESTION him?....But, no, our protagonist runs. So crazy, lazy plotting! I figured I'd ignore this stupid start because I had full faith that Mr. Chapman would get the story going ANY MINUTE NOW. But, no, the book continued with the crazy plot full of coincidences and with NONE of the inventiveness that made you ignore the few holes in the plot of The Ascendant. (Here, the holes overwhelm the story.) There is absolutely no character development either. The author assumes you know the characters from the first novel...and adds nothing to them as people in King Fear. In fact, the characters act out of character in many instances. A total fail, as far as I am concerned. IF there is a third novel in this series, I'll make sure to wait and read other people's reviews first.

    Unworthy of Nell Goddin
I love the Nell Goddin series, so when this came up in the kindle library at no cost, I jumped at it! It's a good thing it didn't cost anything because it was pretty worthless. Let me tell you why: 1) it should have been read soon after Molly and Ben met while he was still the gendarmerie, not at the end of the 6-book series when it came to me; 2) it certainly WAS a short story that ended as quickly as it started; and, 3) the ending was awful.
It's really not relevant to the series and not worth paying for or reading.
    A good short story
What a good short story. Would Adrian's deductions be simple? Would they even be correct? Have fun finding out.
    Disappointing
I enjoyed the other Castillac books. This short story had a flat disappointing ending. I do enjoy this writer, so I'll wait for the next Molly Sutton book.
    A simple deduction
Adrian had a small mystery on his hands. What is his old neighbor doing in the middle of the night in her yard? He must know. Could it be treasure, money or even jewels? How long must he wait... Now the thought of killing her to know what's in the boxes does sound tempting.
    Five Stars
I love these books, wish she would write some more faster.

His father is an Italian crime lord, a man so dangerous that Sabato's mother died trying to get away from him. For that tragedy, which happened on his seventh birthday, Sabato blames himself. Every year, he practices the ritual of self-punishment, flirting with death the way most boys his age flirt with girls.
That's until 10 years later when he meets a sweet girl named Luciana at St. Andrews of the Holy Cross. For the first time in his life, Sabato doesn't want to end it. The darkness in his soul is replaced by hope. But, as the priests will tell you, the sins of the father are not easily escaped.

    Tragic
What did you love best about Eroe: St. Andrews: A Sabato Origin Story?
This book gave Sabato's backstory, If I had read Sabato first I wouldn't understand the depth of his character and what made him so ugly sometimes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was a short book I couldn't help but listen to in one sitting. It started powerfully and ended just as well.
    The ride begins!
A brief introduction to Sabato, this novella is packed full of suspense, sex and history. Sabato has endured some horrible things in his life, and he blames them on his father, Salvatore. When he encounters Luciana, he sees a light that he has lost since the death of his mother. The question is, will they be able to be together? This ends on a cliffhanger, so I am ready to delve into the next book! Sabato!
Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott are such an amazing narration team. They always bring their A game, and with this one, they bring their Italian accents! Always full of energy and emotion, they bring the Steel stories to life for me!
    Eroe Stars
What a way to start a story, I am so involved I need MORE!
Sabatos life hasnt been easy, but he found something that is all his. Luciana is innocent but she too knows what she wants.

Never better audio of Christie Mystery
I am a great fan of Agatha Christie but have never heard such a great audio of her greatest mystery.
Perhaps because Alison Larkin was raised in England. And maybe because she has been a successful actress her accents are wonderful--and so authentic.
Most important Larkin brings each character and each dramatic turn in this exciting story to new life!
I am certain Agatha Christie would be delighted that such a talented and perfect narrator has been found for her brilliant work!
BRILLIANT narration - Christie fans will love it!
Where does The Secret Adversary rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I love Agatha Christie and have listened to many of her books on audio. Alison Larkin's narration of this one was truly outstanding. I found it via a rave review in Publisher's Weekly and loved every minute. It's up among the best.
What did you like best about this story?
The characters of Tommy and Tuppence and the humor combined with a real sense of what it was like to live in London after World War 1.
Which character as performed by Alison Larkin was your favorite?
    Tuppence!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. And I did. I listened to it on a long car drive and only stopped once for gas.
Alison Larkin is a superb narrator!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
A fun and lively performance, with good accents (especially the little boys). I hope that Alison Larkin will record the rest of the Tommy and Tuppence mysteries!
    Absolutely lovely
The twists and turns in the story didn't let up until the very end. The book was just Splendid. I couldn't tell who was what!
The narration? In a word: marvelous.
    Must be just me
I'm wondering if i purchased a childrens mystery by mistake. This was like listening to a juvenile mystery, perhaps Agatha Christie wrote this when she was a mere teen??? The narrator's voice hurt my ears at times and in general annoyed me. This would be good reading if you like Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys. Recommend listening to a sample before purchasing
I adore Agatha Christie mysteries, so I dont know what went wrong here and I will presume it is me..this doesn't put me off of A.C., I just need to pay more attention to the summary and listen to a sample first.

    Title: Maigret

    Narrator: Gareth Armstrong
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-01-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
A new translation of this gripping novel which sees the inspector brought out of his peaceful retirement.
Maigret shrugged his shoulders, buried his hands in his pockets and went off without answering. He had just spent one of the most wretched days in his life. For hours, in his corner he had felt old and feeble, without idea or incentive. But now a tiny flame flickered. 'You bet we'll see' he growled.
Maigret's peaceful retirement in the countryside is disrupted when a relative unwittingly embroils himself in a crime he did not commit, and the inspector returns to Police Headquarters in Paris once again. This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret Returns.
Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.
    Members Reviews:
    A lesser work, mildly entertaining
The Kindle edition is formatted well. No problems there. Having read many Maigrets over the years and enjoyed them all, this one struck me as contrived and implausible. Thankfully, it's not that long. Mildly entertaining, but overall forgettable.
    Excellent, as always.
You can't go wrong with Inspector Maigret. So far I've read about 35 of them and enjoyed every one. They have everything; entrancing settings, good mysteries, interesting characters and (best of all) really wonderful writing. I'm enjoying the old TV versions of some of them on MHz as well, but you really can't beat the books. There's nobody better than Simenon, though Andrea Camilleri and Fred Vargas might be almost as good.
    Fair to Middling
Who can argue about tastes? This is not one of my favorite Maigret adventures. His ineffectual nephew begs his retired uncle to clean up a mess he's made by not following procedures. The young man's stupidity has left him open to a charge of murder. Maigret's successor regards him with suspicion, and his former colleagues cannot help him much. Maigret cultivates the acquaintance of a prostitute and sets his sights on a crime boss. The psychology is interesting but the climax disappoints.
Each Maigret story is better than the last
    G. Simenon wrote plain simple outstanding novels, His hero Maigret uses his head to find out the truth. Not your normal cops and robbers type story but one with more brain work and understanding people. This is number 19 understand there are 77, will read all of them and strongly recommend the entire series.
    A must read.
I love Simenon, so I am biased.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Siglufjörur: an idyllically quiet fishing village in Northern Iceland where no one locks their doors - accessible only via a small mountain tunnel.
Ari Thór Arason: a rookie policeman on his first posting, far from his girlfriend in Reykjavik - with a past that hes unable to leave behind.
When a young woman is found lying half naked in the snow, bleeding and unconscious, and a highly esteemed, elderly writer falls to his death in the local theatre, Ari is dragged straight into the heart of a community where he can trust no one, and secrets and lies are a way of life.
An avalanche and unremitting snowstorms close the mountain pass, and the 24-hour darkness threatens to push Ari over the edge, as curtains begin to twitch, and his investigation becomes increasingly complex, chilling and personal. Past plays tag with the present, and the claustrophobic tension mounts while Ari is thrust ever deeper into his own darkness blinded by snow and with a killer on the loose.
Taut and terrifying, Snowblind is a startling debut from an extraordinary new talent, taking Nordic noir to soaring new heights. Author of the best-selling Dark Iceland crime series, Ragnar Jonasson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1976 and works as a lawyer. He also teaches copyright law at Reykjavik University and has previously worked on radio and television, including as a TV news reporter for the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.
Before becoming a writer, Ragnar translated 14 Agatha Christie novels into Icelandic and has had short stories published in international literary magazines. Ragnar is a member of the UK Crime Writers' Association (CWA) and recently set up the first overseas chapter of the CWA, in Reykjavik. He is also the cofounder of the Reykjavik international crime writing festival Iceland Noir, which was selected by the Guardian as one of the 'best crime-writing festivals around the world'. Ragnar has appeared on panels at festivals worldwide, and he lives in Reykjavik with his wife and daughter.
    Critic Reviews:
"Is King Arnaldur looking to his laurels? There is a young pretender beavering away, his eye on the crown: Ragnar Jónasson." (Barry Forshaw)
    Members Reviews:
Hugely atmospheric setting & palpable tension!
What did you like most about Snowblind?
The narration brought the story and setting to life for me perfectly! The reader conveys a brilliant sense of place and his slightly chilling narration adds to the tension the listener feels. I would hope this narrator continues with future books. I felt all the claustrophobia and anxiety of Ari Thór living alone in the remote fishing village and Smowblind became compulsive listening. I really could have finished this in one sitting (believe me, I would have liked to)!
A clever plot and some distinctive characters kept me thoroughly engaged and this certainly rates as one of my favourite Audible listens since joining.
What did you like best about this story?
It captured perfectly the plight of Ari Thór - rookie cop, remote posting, far away from his girlfriend and how very isolated he felt.

    Members Reviews:
    Another Coffey winner!
Oh my, Coffey's stories are so intriguing! Though the story is set in modern day, small mountain town, Crow Hollow, VA, the narrative feels old with all the folklore and superstitions. Masterfully told, the reader is constantly wondering who the colorful, southern narrator is - and you will be surprised indeed. Though this story doesn't take place in Mattingly, it does take place just down the road, and these characters are complex and mysterious like those we've grown to love in Coffey's other books. If you like southern fiction with a twist of folklore and a strand of mystery throughout, buckle in and enjoy this wild tale. It is quite the ride.
    Spooky!
I discovered Billy Coffey almost by accident, and I am so glad I did! He is an extraordinarily gifted storyteller and I have yet to read a book of his that I don't like.
However, this novel is quite a bit different than his others. It's exceptionally dark, involving the most heinous human sins including rape, abuse, and murder. (Don't misunderstand -- these awful things are not in there for shock value. They deliberately contribute to the outcome of the plot, which I won't give away here.) I wouldn't recommend reading it alone in the dark before bedtime.
The story is recounted by a local resident to someone from "Away," just passing through. It is the story of a small town, steeped in hard luck, hard work and superstition, whose residents don't seem to really know or trust each other. A group of teenagers, doing normal stupid things that bored teenagers do, arouse the wrath of a witch living on the mountain. What follows is the unraveling of a community fed by fear and suspicion.
What the author is really doing throughout the novel is exploring and examining humanity -- in particular the bad and the ugly. The more the reader progresses, the more apparent it becomes.
Stick with it... you won't find out the truth until the last few pages!
    Another 5 Star Story
I have a list of favorite authors and Billy Coffey is high on that list. I know I will enjoy any book he has written. Billy is an expert at describing people who live off the beaten path. His portrayal of small town people always ring true no matter how different they are.
The story opens as an unnamed source introduces us to Crow Hollow and it's inhabitants. We learn that "The Trouble" started when Cordelia took her mother's diamond bracelet without permission. Cordelia didn't do that for herself. She did it for her friend Scarlett who hoped it would help John David notice her.

    Critic Reviews:
"Lamentation is one of those 'can't put it down' page turners of a read and documents author Joe Clifford as a gifted storyteller of imagination and technical expertise. Lamentation is a deftly written entertainment from first page to last and highly recommended for both personal reading lists and community library Contemporary Fiction collections." (Midwest Book Review)
"At first, I confess this was not very exciting. I had little or no interest in our first-person protagonist and the basic situation seemed rather obvious. Except it winds up into a very unexpected climax of considerable emotional power. So what was initially, and even in retrospect, a pretty simple, by-the-numbers plot with a resolution we've seen before, turns out to be a genuine success. Despite all my forebodings, this simple little thing proved to be a real big hitter." (San Francisco Book Review)
"Clifford (Junkie Love) understands human potential for moral collapse and redemption, and his lean, gritty prose never lets characters or readers off the hook." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Listen!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Joe Clifford gives the listener not only an evocative setting and a taught, brilliantly structured plot, he actually makes us care deeply for the characters in a very real, uncontrived and uncompromising way. This is a rare quality in the genre. Timothy Mckean meets the standards set for the story by Clifford with a studied and gripping style that feels unencumbered by pretense.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character is Chris because, in all of his human error, he still holds onto a strong sense of honor that is rare in the society that he seems perpetually outside of. I also enjoyed Timothy McKean's voice for Chris the most.
What about Timothy McKeans performance did you like?
It seemed that Timothy McKean held the weight and urgency of the plot perfectly while giving added voice to each character's tremendous emotional dimension.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I listened to it almost straight through with only one 10 minute interruption.
Lamentation-Plot twists that had me intrigued to read
I was a bit skeptical of audiobooks, but thought I'd give it a try after hearing a raving review of Timothy McKean's delivery of Joe Clifford's novel LAMENTATION. It took me awhile to embrace this method of "reading," but in the end I was not disappointed.

    I'm addicted
Not since Raymond Chandler have I so loved a writer's work. The production values are fantastic. Gareth Armstrong is such a wonderful reader. And the cover photos are so so awesome. Yes, these are expensive in terms duration per dollar but I can't stop myself from purchasing.
    Timeless, gripping, classic!
A brilliant novella. Maigret is entirely bed bound through out, and we are totally kept guessing until the final scene. Although we are lured into several red herrings along the way! Great stuff. Very atmospheric too, of the period, of small town France, and of the tensions and dependencies between professional men working in the same town all their lives. Secrets deeply hidden. I really enjoyed Mrs Maigret's role in this too. Relaying information, making calls to be overheard in the hotel lobby, and busying herself in her apron throughout.
Brilliant, very characterful. So much better than so many contemporary best sellers in audible crime section!
    One of the best
With the detection taking place from Maigret's sickbed, a nice twist with plenty of intrigue
    could I follow the Story?
A confusing tale with not a lot of satisfaction for the reader. Maigret is not only rather abrupt and dictatorial with his poor wife , which I did not like, but he seems to guess the facts of the case, the relationships and motives of the characters on the basis of almost no information. he is unrealistically all-knowing, leaving us puzzled.

Beneath the surface of Nina Holt's perfect marriage lurks a life of terror inflicted upon her by her politically powerful husband, Michael, and his brother, Greg, a sadistic detective. For over a decade, they have managed to keep Nina imprisoned, using her to satisfy their every whim. Worse still, the only light in her life - her nine-year-old son, Sam - considers Michael a hero. When Sam imitates Michael's violence by lashing out at her, Nina knows it's time for both of them to escape before Sam truly turns into the monster Michael is grooming him to become.
After Nina crashes her car in her haste to escape, kind motorist Case Herder offers her help. Unaware that he has his own plans for her, Nina accepts, igniting a deadly game of cat and mouse as they flee across Tasmania with Sam. As Michael and Greg relentlessly hunt them down to Cradle Mountain, Nina finds herself with nowhere left to run. Cornered, she has no choice but to face evil head-on.

    Disappointed.
Started out as a promising thriller but turned quickly into unbelievable romancing mush. I could hardly wait for it to finish.
