Publisher's Summary:

A group of friends, Kevin, Carl, Mike, and Susan, decided to go hiking in the woods near an abandoned cabin. As they were walking along the trail, they found a gold ancient artifact. It looked like a medallion. The artifact had strange engraved symbols on it and was attached to a long chain. The group of friends kept the strange-looking artifact with them as they were hiking. They took it to the cabin. Later that night, as they were getting all settled in, everyone noticed that it had a strange bright orange glow. As the night grew deeper, a series of unexplained paranormal events began to occur in the cabin. From that moment on, the camping trip suddenly turned into a frightening moment to surpass.

The ancient medallion belonged to a Frenchman who dwelled in the area during the 16th- and 17th-century time period. He was a Frenchman of high statue during his time period. The medallion was a symbol of great power. He often worked on the structure of a castle.

The group of friends consider turning the ancient historical medallion in for a reward, but the paranormal activity in the house grew stronger and stronger. Susan believes the Frenchman wants them to finish some work for him at the castle, many miles away from their house, and return the medallion - or the paranormal activity wouldn't stop. The castle had been abandoned for many centuries and is now a tourist attraction.

Title: My Very Significant Short Story

Author: Dickson He

Narrator: Dickson He

Format: Unabridged

Length: 52 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-29-16

Publisher: Dickson He

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

My Very Significant Short Story presents a sharp social satire of competitive 21st century America. In a deceptively simple and entertaining format, it deftly strikes jabs to subjects as varied as the media, politics, inequality, consumerism, technology, youth, art, literature, popular culture, and other topics, all in a small, but uproarious package.

My Very Significant Short Story constitutes an uneventful debut of sorts as Dickson He's first serious work self-published at the age of 20. It stands short enough for people who only read 140 characters to enjoy and priced for people who eat ramen regularly to afford.

My Very Significant Short Story follows a seemingly ordinary accountant named Robert who, prone to fiery internal monologues, tries to write a book amidst many distractions. He navigates life at CPA Farm in Bauston with crazy, offensive characters.

Steeped with irony, not even the author knows what this book means. Even if it does not rank as the next Great American Novel, it plays well for a few laughs and bouts of deep thinking, and laughing is healthy.

Sardonically, My Very Significant Short Story can be seen as "a book about nothing" or, at worst, "an experimental farce written by an angsty 20-year-old to test self-publishing." This may count as literature.

Title: Sun at Midnight

Author: Rosie Thomas

Narrator: Josie Lawrence

Format: Abridged

Length: 3 hrs and 59 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-28-16

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

An epic love story and adventure set against the harsh, beautiful background of Antarctica.

Alice is a scientist: she relies on method, precision, proof. But when her relationship with Oxford artist Peter Brown collapses spectacularly, she is forced to evaluate her own life for the first time.

In her 30s, childless, tied to Oxford by her work, it is time to break away. Alice's mother, Margaret Mather, is famous as an adventuring anthropologist, one of the first women in Antarctica many years before. Alice accepts an invitation to go in Margaret's place to the southernmost point of the Earth and stay there for months, away from the world that has let her down.

Little does she expect the strangeness of a place coloured blue and white, lit by an unearthly permanent sunlight. And nothing has prepared her for the close confines of a small base shared with eight men and one other woman. A base where tensions run high, where the hostile environment traps them and where the distance means no one has a past. Where she feels such a strong attraction to a man with danger in his face that she cannot speak to him. And where she discovers something else that will change her life forever - if she survives.

"Honest and absorbing, Rosie Thomas mixes the bitter and the hopeful with the knowledge that the human heart is far more complicated than any rule suggests." (Mail on Sunday)

"Thomas's novels are beautifully written. This one is a treat." (Marie Claire)

review of sun at mignight

The author has a gift for evocative language. The descriptions of Antarctica were very effective in conveying both a sense of the alien landscape and also experience of it described very authenticall and vividly. Characters were well developed. I found the descriptions of the geology were interesting and well integrated in the story. Images created e.g. of the difficulties of flying a helicopter, felt real and, regardles of the storyline, were absorbing. I enjoyed the book. It would make a good movie?!

Book Club selection

This book was chosen for my Book Club. I probably would not have picked it up to read. Glad I did although it was a little slow in parts. I might have liked a little more character development.

Very enjoyable and interesting read. Story complex enough and interesting development of characters. VEry graphic descriptions of Antartica - as if we were there. Could really feel with the characters especially Alice as she went out of her comfort zone and pushed her limits.

Surprising story set in the Antarctic

Somehow this book manages to convey the sense of bleakness as well as the grandeur of the Antarctic stations. The isolation, the danger constantly lived with, the human struggles. In the midst of this backdrop are a group of people whom you son become involved with. The crises gradually build, then escalate so much that you can't put the book down. Very exciting story.

Another good read by Rosie Thomas

Interesting setting and reference to NZ. Sensitive portrayal of what can happen when a group of people are forced together in a restricted environment. Enjoyed.

Title: The Man Without a Shadow

Author: Joyce Carol Oates

Narrator: Susan Hanfield

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 33 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-28-16

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

From best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates, a taut and fascinating novel that examines the mysteries of human memory and personality.

In 1965, a young research scientist named Margot Sharpe meets Elihu Hoopes, the subject of her study, a handsome amnesiac who cannot remember anything beyond the last 70 seconds. Over the course of 30 years, the two embark on mirroring journeys of self-discovery.

Margot, enthralled by her charming, mysterious, and deeply lonely patient, as well as her officious supervisor, attempts to unlock Eli's shuttered memories of a childhood trauma without losing her own sense of identity in the process. And Eli, haunted by memories of an unknown girl's body underneath the surface of a lake, pushes to finally know himself once again, despite potentially devastating consequences.

As Margot and Eli meet over and over again, Joyce Carol Oates' tightly written, nearly clinical prose propels the lives of these two characters forwards, both suspended in a dream-like, shadowy present, and seemingly balanced on the thinnest, sharpest of lines between past and future.

Made vivid by Oates' eye for detail and searing insight into the human psyche, The Man Without a Shadow is an eerie, ambitious, and structurally complex novel, as poignant as it is thrilling.

Critic Reviews:

"Oates excels at creating spooky, off-kilter atmospherics.... The maze of memory is an ideal setting for Oates' trademark mixture of melodrama and pathos." (Kirkus Review)

"This complexly suspenseful and darkly erotic duel between a lovesick mad scientist and her beleaguered yet far from helpless subject illuminates, with strobe-light intensity, the labyrinthine mysteries of our brains and minds." (Booklist)

"A powerful new novel.... We see how, in the hands of a great writer, a gripping story can be torn from the poisonous rubble." (Rose Tremain, Guardian (on The Sacrifice)

"Oates demonstrates a fearlessness in her writing. The book has the energy and force of a river in full flow, filled with dangerous undercurrents and eddies." (Daily Mail (on The Sacrifice)

"Visceral and hypnotizing...simmers with barely concealed rage at the impotence inflicted on people by race and gender inequalities." (Lesley McDowell, Independent (on The Sacrifice)

Ethically Interesting!

The book description ââIn 1965, neuroscientist Margot Sharpe meets Elihu Hoopes: the âman without a shadow,â who will be known, in time, as the most-studied and most famous amnesiac in history. A vicious infection has clouded anything beyond the last seventy seconds just beyond the fog of memory.ââ gives us a clue that this novel is based on the case of HM, the real patient who became the most famous amnesiac in history. JCO acknowledges Corkinâs book on HM as her primary research source, and JCOâs fictional amnesiac, EH, is indeed spookily like HM in many of his responses to the world he lives in following the loss of his ability to make new conscious memories. Likewise, the laboratory environment and the memory tests EH is given (again and again, and every time new to EH) are well researched and accurate.
