Title: The Hundred-Year House

Author: Rebecca Makkai

Narrator: Jen Tullock

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 hrs and 33 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-28-16

Publisher: Penguin Books Limited

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

The acclaimed author of The Borrower returns with a dazzlingly original, mordantly witty novel about the secrets of an old-money family and their turn-of-the-century estate, Laurelfield.

Meet the Devohrs: Zee, a Marxist literary scholar who detests her parents' wealth but nevertheless finds herself living in their carriage house; Gracie, her mother, who claims she can tell your lot in life by looking at your teeth; and Bruce, her stepfather, who is stockpiling supplies for the Y2K apocalypse and perpetually late for his tee time.

Then there's Violet Devohr, Zee's great-grandmother, who, they say, took her own life somewhere in the vast house and whose massive oil portrait still hangs in the dining room. Violet's portrait was known to terrify the artists who resided at the house from the 1920s to the 1950s, when it served as the Laurelfield Arts Colony - and this is exactly the period Zee's husband, Doug, is interested in.

An out-of-work academic whose only hope of a future position is securing a book deal, Doug is stalled on his biography of the poet Edwin Parfitt, once in residence at the colony. All he needs to get the book back on track - besides some motivation and self-esteem - is access to the colony records, rotting away in the attic for decades.

But when Doug begins to poke around where he shouldn't, he finds Gracie guards the files with a strange ferocity, raising questions about what she might be hiding. The secrets of the hundred-year house would turn everything Doug and Zee think they know about her family on its head - that is, if they were to ever uncover them.

In this brilliantly conceived, ambitious, and deeply rewarding novel, Rebecca Makkai unfolds a generational saga in reverse, leading the reader back in time on a literary scavenger hunt as we seek to uncover the truth about these strange people and this mysterious house.

Lovely listen

This was a very good audio listen. The narrater got involved with the characters. so it was like different people speaking of there time which is what the author wanted i think. Only criticism is to me the story felt rushed and therefore i found it difficult to see the point to some characters and their stories. However the book goes down as a brilliant read and well worth a credit. Enjoy!

Title: The Immortal Crown

Subtitle: Age of X #2

Author: Richelle Mead

Narrator: Emily Shaffer

Format: Unabridged

Length: 13 hrs and 50 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-28-16

Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Immortal Crown by Richelle Mead, read by Emily Shaffer.

When Justin March and supersoldier Mae Koskinen are assigned to a diplomatic delegation going into Arcadia - a dangerous neighbouring country to the RUNA, in which religion is intertwined with government - they discover powerful forces at work.

Mae also has her own secret mission: finding the illegitimate niece her family smuggled away years ago. But with Justin and Mae resisting the resurgence of the gods in Arcadia, a reporter's connection with someone close to Justin back home threatens to expose their mission - and with it the divine forces the government is determined to keep secret.

Members Reviews:

Fantastic sequel!

Richelle Mead has risen to the challenge - a sequel that is better than book 1!

Our superwoman has acknowledged the existence of the supernatural, but, like Justin, is wary of the cost of accepting a deity's offer. Gods are vying for power and their chosen are pieces on a chessboard. These chosen are showing up in unexpected places with agendas of their own. Mae, without a patron god, is vulnerable and gets hurt in the worst possible way.

The two of them go to Arcadia, a neighbouring country (a sort of Bible Belt theocracy) as part of a delegation and become embroiled in a plot against the Runa.

I hope book 3 is published soon - waiting is torture!

The narrator is competent but she gets too excited when there is action in the story.

Title: Rex

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: José Manuel Prieto, Esther Allen

Narrator: Noah Michael Levine

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 29 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-27-16

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Rex is a sexy, zany, and sophisticated literary game rife with allusions to Proust and Borges, set in a world of wealthy Russian expats and mafiosos who have settled in western Europe. J. is a young Cuban man who, thanks to his knowledge of Russian and Spanish, has become the tutor of the young son of a wealthy Russian couple living in Marbella, in the part of southern Spain that the Russian mafia has turned into its winter quarters.

As J. attempts to give the boy a general grade-school education by exclusively reading him Proust, he also becomes the personal secretary of the boy's father, Vasily, an ex-scientist whom J. suspects is on the run from gangsters. Vasily's wife, Nelly, a seductive woman always draped in mind-boggling quantities of precious stones, believes the only way to evade the gangsters is an extravagant plan linking Vasily to the throne of the czars.

Rex is an unforgettable achievement: an illusory, allusive gem of a novel that confirms Jose Manuel Prieto as one of the most talented writers of his generation.

Members Reviews:

A thoroughly enjoyable literary puzzle

This novel by Cuban-born, Russian-educated José Manuel Prieto is narrated by a tutor (who asks to be called Psellus) and directed to his pupil, eleven-year-old Petya, the son of two Russian émigrés living in luxury on Spain's Costa del Sol. Petya's parents, Vasily and Nelly, are hiding from two Russian mafiosos they swindled out of millions in a scheme involving fake diamonds. But, in Rex, appearances are highly questionable, and the purported swindle could be merely a tool used by Vasily and Nelly to persuade Psellus to do their bidding, including transforming Vasily into the long-lost czar of Russia. Whatever the truth, plot is secondary in Prieto's unique literary creation that is Rex.

Psellus derives his lessons to the young Petya, and indirectly to the reader, exclusively from the Book, Psellus's name for Proust's In Search of Lost Time:

"If you receive nothing more from me than some knowledge of the details of the Book, if in all your adult life you don't manage to retain any more than a few passages, a few scattered phrases of the Book, that would be enough to give you a distinct advantage as you go out into the world. Only through the Book can you learn to judge men sensibly, plumb their depths, detect and comprehend their obscurest motives, sound the abyss of their souls."

Psellus's other influences include the supremely worthy Writer, who is really an amalgamation of numerous writers, including Shakespeare, Nabokov, and Dostoyevsky, and the despicable Commentator, quite likely intended as a stand-in for Jorge Luis Borges, and perhaps even, at times, for Prieto himself.

Prieto's prose defies description. It's unlike anything else I've read recently (or maybe ever). It's a highly referential banter of thoughts, images, dialog, and questions to the reader. Often lacking in subjects or verbs or other generally indispensable parts of sentences, Prieto's sentences are obscure and difficult, but also loaded with charm and humor. Esther Allen's flexible, lively translation is its own work of art.

Titre: Le Voyage d'Octavio

Auteur: Miguel Bonnefoy

Narrateur: Miguel Bonnefoy

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 3 hrs and 5 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 01-22-16

Éditeur: SonoBook

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Members Reviews:

Hard to get into.

Found this story hard to get into, maybe because each chapter focuses on a different character. Did not initially warm to Catherine, who was featured in first chapter.

I persevered with it & did get more interesting, liked the portrayal of character Cissie.

Good narrator.

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 01-14-16

Herausgeber: Allotria Verlag

Kategorien: Fiction, Contemporary

Zusammenfassung des Herausgebers:

Ein Trip zwischen Nobelhotel und Bordellbett.

Immer schön brav mit dem Strom schwimmen. Kein Risiko eingehen.
