    A Charming Slice of Life
I purchased this book during a free promo and figured I had nothing to lose. I was surprised at the negative reviews for this book. I honestly enjoyed it.
Mitch is a responsible, caring man and son, who visits his elderly mother each week. His normal visits take place on Sundays, but because his mother is ill on this particular Sunday (also a leap day), Mitch stops into his favorite coffee shop instead. What follows are several chance encounters with a variety of characters he might never have met.
This novel was slightly reminiscent of the writings of Carson McCullers, who just happens to be one of my favorite writers. Michael Eads writes in an open and direct style that I genuinely enjoyed and I find at times to be lacking in novels written by men. His characters come across as being empathetic and introspective, giving readers a glimpse at people who are at their most vulnerable. The theme of "everyone has a story inside them" is the thread that runs through this little gem of a book. It also shows us that sometimes people just need someone to listen to their story.
I recommend this book and urge readers to give it a try.
    Enjoyable read
The book "Leap Year at the Coffee Shop" by Michael L. Eads was an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more by this author. The interaction of the characters brought you right into the story. I would say well done Michael.
    Good read
It was a good read, easy to pick back up after a few days of not reading it . Its nice
    Not the story I'd hoped
The premise of the story was neat, the cover looked intriguing, the first two stories were good, then it all became a little boring. It's just that the story didn't really build up to anything. It was actually a series of coffee-chats with individuals in the cafe. That's it. There wasn't a build up, there wasn't an ah-ha, page turning "oh this is what's going to happen" kind of feeling. Honestly, it just didn't feel like it was pulled together into a complete book - it was just two people in a conversation then it's over, and oh, here comes another conversation.
If each of the stories had somehow tied together in the end; if the main character had developed a relationship with any of the folks; if there had been some sort of catharsis then I think I would have enjoyed it more. It also feels like there were things that were alluded to that could have been developed for more of a story-line (like how "special" the main character was, or how it was February 29th).
Sorry, I can't recommend it to any of my friends.
A Geat Rainy Day Read With A Mission
This book will have you thinking and remembering it long after you have finished . A coffee shop is the setting for the protagonist Mitch, who on this rainy day in Seattle, comes into the shop on a Sunday instead of Saturday.

    Publisher's Summary:
My Unknown Lover, Hannah Goldberg's new book, is a beautiful and sensual novel about the search for true love.
A random error phone number leads Rachel, the heroine of the novel, to a strange conversation with a man she likes more than any man she has met in a long time. Almost unnoticed, sneaking, her heart hopes that "Wrong Number" is the man she has been waiting for for 30 years.
Hannah Goldberg, with her rhythmic language, is accompanied by Rachel and her friend, Leah, both daughters of Holocaust survivors, from growing up in Haifa until the '40s. Leah took the usual route: She met a good guy and built a family while Rachel was always looking for the one and only who would meet her expectations. Was Leah right with her compromise? Is there anywhere in the world Rachel's love life is waiting? Is "Wrong Number" the man she is looking for?
Hanna Goldberg, a writer, poet, and lyricist makes the book original, surprising, and bold, with unique language known to us also in her songs. My Unknown Lover starred for many weeks on the best-seller list. My Unknown Lover, Hannah Goldberg's book, was published by Keter. The My Unknown Lover audiobook was produced and published by SonicBooks.

All the skin around her mouth wrinkles like a drawstring on a purse
Unbecoming by Jenny Downham is one of those books you eagerly pick up when you have time to relax.
Ms. Downham is a gifted story teller. She has that rare quality of describing common sights in with fresh analogies bringing vivid images to mind. For example, âPat brings the cigarette to her lips and takes a long pull. All the skin around her mouth wrinkles like a drawstring on a purse.â Perfect image!
The story is centered on a teenager, her mother, and grandmother, each with their demons and gifts which have been influenced by their interrelationships. How the women respond to challenges like peer pressure, aging, homosexuality, abandonment, rings so true and resonated in me.
The book is full of suspense which compelled me to keep reading just one more short chapter before I had to put the book down. I also enjoyed learning a little about the differences in the social networks and support in the UK vs the US.
    Thanks for the pleasure.
    Unbecoming
A well written book that shows the sad, fearful side of someone suffering from dementia and the joyful, happy side when the same person can share memories and "be in the moment." The Editorial Review on Amazon stated that this book was for Grades 9 and up. I am a peer of Mary's age but I enjoyed learning about the lives and struggles of the rest of the immediate family and how Mary impacted them.
    Unbecoming's characters are devastatingly delightful
So delighted to read this novel that touches on so many points and relates to absolutely more than one generation.
I am extraordinarily sensitive to storylines that touch on Alzheimer's disease. Jenny does so while touching on the storylines of the other characters affected by the disease as well. Bravo.
    Excellent book!
Outstanding writing, good character development, interesting story line.
    Enjoyable read
This story kept my interest. Realistic characters and emotions. .

    Publisher's Summary:
It is no small matter, after all, to create something - to make it so only by setting down the words. We forget the magnitude, sometimes, of that miracle.
Mr. Crowe was once the toast of the finest salons. A man of learning and means, he travelled the world, enthralling all who met him. Now Mr. Crowe devotes himself to earthly pleasures. He has retreated to his sprawling country estate, where he lives with Clara, his mysterious young ward, and Eustace, his faithful manservant.
His great library gathers dust, and his once magnificent gardens grow wild. But Mr. Crowe and his extraordinary gifts have not been entirely forgotten. When he acts impetuously over a woman, he attracts the attention of Dr. Chastern, the figurehead of a secret society to which Crowe still belongs.
Chastern comes to Crowe's estate to call him to account, and what follows will threaten everyone he cares for. But Clara possesses gifts of her own, gifts whose power she has not yet fully grasped. She must learn to use them quickly if she is to save them all.
Read by Mike Grady and Imogen Wilde.
    Members Reviews:
    Magic and mystery.
This is a strange book, where all is not as it seems. Not quite to the extent of Alice in Wonderland, but in a similar, less extreme vein. There is some beautiful, almost poetic writing and the characters feel like players in a period piece, such as Jane Eyre.
In the opening scenes we meet Mr Crowe, whose behaviour is particularly heavy-handed and who sets in motion a series of events that he appears to have very little control over. His manservant, Eustace is left to pick up the pieces and attempt to minimise the damage, but eventually, Crowe is called to account by the creepy Dr Chastern and his nasty sidekick, Nazaire.
Several questions are left unanswered, such as who really was Mr Crowe? He appears to be an elderly (centuries old?) author of sorts, who has lost his motivation and now spends his time in a rambling old house with a woman who he picked up at a night club. Two other people live with him - his mute ward, Clara, who also possesses mysterious powers, and the devoted Eustace.
Eustace has his own backstory but this part I found less captivating. Ditto Clara's captivity, both of which form the second part of the book. I would have liked Clara to have had some backstory too. The ending was unfortunately a bit rushed, though maybe the author had backed himself into a corner by this time. For me it was the magic and mystery of the first half of the book that earned this novel its four stars.
I don't think I would have enjoyed this story so much if I'd read it in hard copy but I was listening to an Audible version, which was beautifully narrated by Mike Grady and Imogen Wilde. My only niggle with the narration was that Ms Wilde did not have enough variation in her voices and so Nazaire sounded very much like Arabella.
Not an ugly duckling but no swan either
This book, judging by the extensive list of press quotes, promised much and, to a point seemed to deliver. The story draws you in with its exciting and dramatic opening and then pads swiftly along in enigmatic style. This is, for me, the nub of the problem; it is so enigmatic that much is implied but never actually said. There are so many loose ends and unanswered questions that it left me, as the reader / listener, wondering what on earth happened.
