Tortellini at Noon

This week we watched the 2015 horror film Green Room. Starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots and Patrick Stewart, the film focuses on a punk band who find themselves attacked by neo-Nazi skinheads after witnessing a murder at a remote club in the Pacific Northwest. The film came from director Jeremy Saulnier’s desire to direct a thriller set in a green room. Come join us for our review of this really great movie.

We watched the 1976 fantasy, sci-fi, action film Logan’s Run. It depicts a Utopian future society on the surface, revealed as a dystopia where the population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by killing everyone who reaches the age of thirty. The story follows the actions of Logan 5, a “Sandman”, who has terminated others who have attempted to escape death and is now faced with termination himself. The film is directed by Michael Anderson and stars Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Farrah Fawcett, and Peter Ustinov. Come join us for our very unenthusiastic reaction to this film.

8:49 P.M. Somewhere in the 20th century. For this episode we watched the 1985 cult classic film Brazil. Directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins and Ian Holm, the film centres on Sam Lowry, a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living in a small apartment, set in a consumer-driven dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil’s satire of bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Come join us as we watch a film that has broken into Conor’s top 10 favorite films.

We know this isn’t a new thing, it came out six months ago but this was a quick replacement for our original movie pick which was too long for how late we started, its Netflix’s Black Mirror interactive film Bandersnatch. written by series creator Charlie Brooker In Bandersnatch, viewers make decisions for the main character, Stefan Butler (Fionn Whitehead) who is adapting a fantasy choose-your-own-adventure novel into a video game in 1984. Other characters include Mohan Thakur (Asim Chaudhry) and Colin Ritman (Will Poulter), both of whom work at a video game company, Butler’s father, Peter (Craig Parkinson) and Butler’s therapist, Dr. Haynes (Alice Lowe). The film is based on a planned Imagine Software video game of the same name which went unreleased after the company filed for bankruptcy. It also alludes to Lewis Carroll’s own works that feature the bandersnatch creature. A piece of science fiction and horror, Bandersnatch incorporates meta-commentary and rumination on free will Come join us for a discussion on our choices and if free will is actually a real thing or is everything already predetermined.

Admittedly this episo0de was originally supposed to go up for Easter because ya know bunnies but we forgot about it. Watership Down is about A group of rabbits flee their doomed warren and face many dangers to find and protect their new home. Come join us and here Conor’s strong dislike of this film.

The cast of the 1986 classic Aliens.

Game over man, Game Over!! When we found out recently that Mark had never seen Aliens, we were determined to make this an episode of the show and it was luck that he just so happened to watch the first one this past Friday (which he also revealed he’d never seen either and had actually watched Alien 3). Released in 1986 and written and directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver, Aliens picks up 57 years after the first film. The film follows Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley as she returns to the moon where her crew encountered the hostile Alien creature, this time accompanied by a unit of space marines. Additional roles are played by Carrie Henn, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, William Hope, Al Matthews, and Bill Paxton. Come join us and see what Mark thought of this classic film.
