Total Soccer Show: USMNT, Champions League, EPL, and more ...

On this week’s episode of Allocation Disorder, Paul and Sam break down the new, revolutionary Leagues Cup format that was announced earlier this week. Why is this MLS/Liga MX collaboration such a big deal? What does it mean for MLS in terms of television revenue? Will this tournament encourage MLS to relax its many roster building mechanisms? And is this Concacaf’s version of the European Super League?

After the Leagues Cup talk, Paul and Sam move on to a discussion of FC Dallas. Sam yells. It’s entertaining. You should listen to it.

It’s listener question time! On this episode, Taylor, Ryan, Graham, and Joe teamed up to tackle your lovely inquiries. You can find the full list of questions that we tackled down below:

1) At the Euros this summer, England brought on a couple of players specifically to take penalty kicks in the shootout against Italy. It, uh, didn’t work. Are there any examples of this being a good strategy?

2) In what parts of the world are beach soccer and futsal most popular? And will arena soccer ever become as popular again as it was in the early 1980s?

3) Why don’t we use more data in our analysis of games?

4) How much money should we be putting in FC Sheriff to make it out of their Champions League group?

5) Every once in a while, you hear players and managers refer to other players by nicknames. Are there any interesting nicknames that stick out to us?

6) What's the difference between 'hero-ball' & 'taking the game by the scruff of the neck'?

The Athletic's Sam Stejskal returns to the podcast to discuss why Paul Tenorio is the superior contributor to Allocation Disorder. After that, we spend A LOT of time on the USMNT's start to World Cup qualifying: what's it like to cover them at home and on the road, who impressed (or, more accurately, instilled confidence) in the opening games, and what happened with Weston McKennie? We also get into the newly reimagined Leagues' Cup and the massive impact it could have on Concacaf, and spend some time in MLS, talking FC Dallas, New England, San Jose, and more!

It’s a crossover episode! Adam Belz and Greg Velasquez of the Scuffed podcast join Taylor and Joe to answer a score of USMNT-centric listener questions. Which U.S. players would we move to a new club? Is it still possible for Gregg Berhalter to change the way the world views American soccer? What does our first-choice U.S. midfield look like? We talk about all of those things - and many more - on the show.

This is the first of a two part crossover series. You can find the second part in Scuffed’s feed!

On this week’s episode of Allocation Disorder, Paul and Sam discuss a host of topics from across MLS. First up: CCL. With MLS’s last remaining Concacaf Champions League entrant now out of the tournament, why do we keep seeing the same old story play out against Liga MX?

Next, Paul and Sam provide updates on some of the open coaching and GM positions across MLS. What’s the latest on RSL’s head coaching search? Could Landon Donovan take over that job? Is San Jose getting closer to hiring a new GM? Will the Houston Dynamo be looking for a new coach in addition to a new general manager? And what’s the latest on Vancouver’s head coaching search and Cincinnati’s GM search?

Then to close out the show, our hosts talk about how to fix an underperforming Toronto FC team.

Graham is back! Smiley face. But Joe is absent. Sad face. Nevertheless, there's a whole lot of weekend to review, and we get right to it... by discussing the VMAs. But then it's on to...

1) Manchester United's win over Newcastle with Ronaldo returning, starting, and scoring a brace. And also, Jesse Lingard is still alive!

2) Bayern Munich demonstrates that if you take a club's manager, best defender and most important attacking facilitator, it's much harder for them to cause you problems. Just ask Leipzig.

3) Napoli continues the strong start with a 2-1 over Juventus, whose individual mistakes have us wondering what Allegri needs to fix first and fastest.

4) Atletico were different, and then familiar... and then they ended up getting two late goals to earn a 2-1 win, thereby proving that the club will never change. As is tradition.
